Chapter 587 A Scheming Man
The night is deep and quiet, the moon is bright and the stars are few.
Gu Jingxi couldn't fall asleep for a long time. He glanced at his son lying between him and A Yao. The little thing was cute and adorable, but the more he looked at him, the more it bothered him. A Yao didn't care about him anymore after having this little one.
He wasn't asleep, and neither was Meng Jinyao. She glanced at him and asked with concern, "Husband, why are you still awake so late? Is there some troublesome case that's keeping you up at night?"
Gu Jingxi replied, "No."
Meng Jinyao asked again, "Then why are you tossing and turning?"
Gu Jingxi turned his head to look at her, his eyes filled with resentment, and asked, "Don't you know why your husband can't sleep?"
Meng Jinyao shook her head blankly. What did she know? She wasn't a mind reader; how could she know why he had suddenly become melancholy? She just felt that this man had suddenly become pretentious, keeping his thoughts to himself and expecting her to guess. Wasn't this just the behavior of an unreasonable, spoiled wife?
That's what she was thinking, but she still patiently asked, "Husband, how am I supposed to know if you don't tell me? Why don't you give me a hint?"
Gu Jingxi spoke with a mournful tone, like a woman in her boudoir, "Ayao, you've ignored me for three days now. You clearly promised me last night that you wouldn't sleep with Gu Xiuheng tonight, but you brought him over and even wanted to lie between us. Do you think you did this on purpose?"
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao's face froze. She suddenly remembered what she had promised him last night, and then glanced at her son who was sleeping soundly. She knew that if she didn't coax him tonight, the consequences would be serious. She smiled awkwardly and said, "Husband, it's just that Wanwan is clingy. I'll send him back to the wet nurse now. Wanwan is all grown up now, so he can sleep by himself from now on. Boys shouldn't be too spoiled. They need to learn to be independent early on. Don't you think so, husband?"
As soon as she finished speaking, Gu Jingxi sat up, got out of bed, picked up her sleeping son, and walked out.
Seeing this, Meng Jinyao subconsciously moved to the inside of the bed until there was nowhere left to move.
A short while later, Gu Jingxi returned to the room and saw his wife, who was wrapped up tightly in the quilt at the far end of the bed. He smiled meaningfully and said, "Ayao, what are you doing hiding in there? Your husband is not going to eat you."
After he finished speaking, he got onto the bed and pulled his wife, who was huddled on the innermost side, over to him.
Meng Jinyao swallowed hard, sensing a dangerous glint in his eyes, and stammered, "Husband, I'm sleepy."
Gu Jingxi, unusually, showed no mercy and became cold-hearted, saying, "You go to sleep, I'll do my thing."
As soon as he finished speaking, he pulled off the blanket that Meng Jinyao was wrapped in and began to busy himself.
Meng Jinyao wasn't sleepy at first, but after Gu Jingxi's antics, she was exhausted and sleepy. But the man just wouldn't stop, and she had to say sweet things to coax him. She repeated those embarrassing words over and over again, and finally, she fell asleep without realizing it.
The next day, it was almost noon.
Meng Jinyao slowly woke up. When she opened her eyes and saw that the room was bright, she knew that it was getting late. She wanted to get up, but she felt tired all over, with a sore back and weak legs, and she didn't want to move at all.
She opened her mouth and called out "Ningdong," but when she heard her own hoarse voice, she cursed Gu Jingxi inwardly for being so unrestrained and tormenting her.
Ningdong and Chunliu were waiting in the outer room. When they heard the sounds coming from inside, they quickly went in to serve them.
Upon entering, they saw the lady lying on the bed with a resentful expression. Just as they were about to ask her what was wrong, they heard her ask them, "What time is it now?"
Ningdong replied, "Madam, it's almost noon now. You can wash up and it will be lunchtime soon."
Meng Jinyao asked again, "Today seems to be a day off. Where is the Marquis?"
Ningdong replied, "The Marquis is in the study. Does Madam want to see the Marquis? This servant will go and invite the Marquis over right away."
Ning Dong had just spoken, and before Meng Jinyao could reply, Gu Jingxi's voice came: "Ayao is looking for me?"
When Meng Jinyao saw him, her face darkened immediately. She snorted and ignored him.
Chunliu and Ningdong looked at each other, wondering what had happened to their two masters. They were unsure whether to leave or stay and continue serving them.
Gu Jingxi waved his hand, "You may all leave. Bring in water and help Madam wash up."
Spring willows and winter stillness retreated in response.
Gu Jingxi walked towards the bed, sat down on the edge of the bed, looked down at his wife who still had a dark face, and reached out to pick her up and coax her: "It's all my fault for making our A Yao angry. A Yao, please forgive me this time, okay? I will never dare to do it again next time."
Meng Jinyao reached out and pinched his waist, then scoffed, "When have you ever said that? You clearly know you're wrong, but you still dare to do it next time."
Hearing her hoarse voice, Gu Jingxi knew he had gone too far last night, and coaxed her gently, "Ayao, I know I was wrong. If you want me to hit you or punish you, I will accept it. Just don't be angry anymore."
Meng Jinyao glared at him: "You'll sleep in the study this month, I'm going to sleep with Wanwan."
Gu Jingxi sighed softly, her tone filled with regret: "Then I'm afraid we can't let Ayao have her wish. Mother dotes on Wanwan. This morning I took Wanwan to pay my respects to Mother. Mother hugged Wanwan and couldn't bear to let go. She left Wanwan with us, saying she would take care of her for a while. Ayao doesn't need to worry about Wanwan being lonely. Yunxin from Xiuyuan's family is also with Mother."
Meng Jinyao: "???"
She glared angrily at Gu Jingxi with a tense expression, gritting her teeth in anger. She refused to believe that this man wasn't behind it.
What a scheming man! He sent Wanwan to his mother-in-law's place before she woke up, and then said something to his mother-in-law, who kept Wanwan and stopped her from using Wanwan as a shield.
The mother-in-law adores her grandson, and if Wanwan stays with her for a while, she'll be delighted. How could she possibly take the child back? She can only let Wanwan stay with her so her mother-in-law can dote on him to her heart's content. Once her mother-in-law is tired of taking care of the child, she'll go and take him back.
Gu Jingxi seemed oblivious to his wife's anger and continued in a gentle voice, "Ayao, are you hungry? Get up and get dressed. The kitchen made your favorite dishes today, so you can eat them in a little while." After saying that, he bent down, picked up her shoes, and helped her put them on, then helped her get dressed.
Meng Jinyao was really hungry and didn't want to go hungry, so she let him serve her. She got dressed, washed up, and had her hair combed by him. Finally, she was dressed properly and went out to have lunch.
Knowing he was in the wrong, Gu Jingxi treated his little darling with utmost care, almost feeding her.
Perhaps because the dishes on the table were all her favorites, her taste buds were greatly satisfied during the meal. When she put down her chopsticks, Meng Jinyao looked completely content and finally dared to pay attention to him, asking, "Husband, is the autumn imperial examination result announced tomorrow?"
Gu Jingxi nodded: "Yes, that's right."
Meng Jinyao couldn't help but feel nervous. Her sister-in-law hoped that Xiuwen would become successful, and she also placed high hopes on her second brother. On the one hand, she hoped that her second brother would be successful, but on the other hand, she was afraid of putting too much pressure on him. Therefore, she dared not show any of her feelings in front of her second brother, for fear that he would be under too much pressure.
Gu Jingxi reached out and held her small hand, saying gently, "Don't be nervous. Second brother is still young. Even if he doesn't pass the imperial examination, he will definitely pass it in three years. However, with his current talent, he will definitely pass the imperial examination if nothing unexpected happens."
Meng Jinyao nodded, knowing that being anxious about this matter was useless, and the result would be known tomorrow.
