Chapter Ninety-Four: Pampering Only Her
When Gu Jingxi returned from his shift, he saw Meng Jinyao sitting quietly alone in the room, her eyes lifeless, like a delicate wooden puppet without a soul.
He was stunned; he had never seen Meng Jinyao like this before.
This girl's personality is actually quite contradictory. She seems dignified and virtuous, but in reality, she's very mischievous. Arguing with Xiuming is clearly a childish thing to do, but the girl just enjoys it.
But this lively young woman is calm and composed in the face of adversity. Even when her fiancé eloped with someone else on their wedding day, she did not panic. Instead, she found herself a new husband with strength and composure.
It's truly rare to see such a resilient spirit in a girl who's only sixteen.
He originally thought nothing could break this young girl, but today he saw her looking so distraught. It seemed that something had happened that was many times more serious than her fiancé eloping with someone on their wedding day.
Gu Jingxi stood there for a while, then slowly walked forward to her. When she got to her, she didn't seem to notice him approaching. Just as he was about to ask her what had happened, he saw that she was clenching her fists so tightly that her nails were digging into her flesh and bleeding.
Seeing this, Gu Jingxi frowned, his narrow phoenix eyes narrowed, and he thought to himself, "This little girl is quite ruthless to herself."
Gu Jingxi sat down beside her and asked gently, "Madam, what's wrong?"
Seeing that she remained silent, clearly not having heard what he said, Gu Jingxi simply reached out and grasped her small hands, forcibly prying open her tightly clenched fists. Seeing that her two fair palms were red, his brows furrowed even more, and he asked again, "Madam, did Xiuming bully you?"
Meng Jinyao snapped out of her daze, looked up at him blankly, and then shook her head after a moment.
Gu Jingxi, with great patience, asked again, "What's wrong? What happened?"
Meng Jinyao remained silent.
She didn't want to talk, and Gu Jingxi didn't force her to answer. He just felt that this couldn't go on. He stared at her for a while, then suddenly got up and left the room. He told Xia Zhu to bring in a basin of water, and then went to the drawer in the inner room to get commonly used medicine for treating injuries, as well as a pair of nail clippers.
Not long after, Xia Zhu brought in a basin of water. Just as she was about to ask what she needed, Gu Jingxi took the basin and sent her away.
Gu Jingxi placed the basin of water on the small table, forcefully pried open the little girl's tightly clenched fist, and seeing that she was still struggling to pull her hand back, just like a child throwing a tantrum, he said: "Whoever provokes you, you should retaliate. Hurting yourself will only make your loved ones suffer and your enemies rejoice."
Meng Jinyao's struggling movements froze.
Seeing that she had calmed down, Gu Jingxi applied a hemostatic and tissue-regenerating ointment to her palm. The wound was not deep, so stopping the bleeding was not difficult, and the wound quickly stopped bleeding.
Then, Gu Jingxi wet a face towel, wrung it out until it was half dry, and gently and carefully wiped the blood off her hands, avoiding the wound.
Meng Jinyao looked up, staring blankly at him. His ethereal face came into view. The man's expression was gentle, with a faint smile on his lips. The next moment, his warm voice rang out: "Long nails do look quite nice, they seem to make your fingers look much longer, but they're not very safe. Shall I cut them for you?"
Perhaps it was because he was being too gentle at that moment, even his voice was full of seductive charm, that Meng Jinyao nodded in agreement as if possessed.
Seeing that she nodded in agreement, Gu Jingxi bandaged her wound and picked up the scissors without hesitation to trim her nails. He trimmed all ten nails and then used a nail file to smooth the sharp nails he had just trimmed to prevent them from scratching her skin.
When a man takes care of someone, his movements are gentle, meticulous, and skillful, as if he has done it many times before.
Through Gu Jingxi, Meng Jinyao seemed to see her grandfather's shadow in a daze. Her grandfather only doted on her, not only trimming her nails, but also tying her hair into two little buns and telling her little stories.
At this moment, Gu Jingxi resembled his grandfather, yet he was not; he was gentle, while his grandfather was loving.
Meng Jinyao asked curiously, "Did my husband often take care of the children before?"
The child she was referring to was Gu Xiuming.
Gu Jingxi paused, looked at her and smiled, "No, this is the first time I've taken care of a child. Luckily, the child is well-behaved and hasn't made much of a fuss, otherwise I wouldn't be able to take care of him."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao lowered her head uncomfortably, avoiding his gaze, and said softly, "My husband is a marquis, how can he do things like taking care of others? Let the maids do it."
Gu Jingxi smiled and said matter-of-factly, "If you wanted a maid to take care of you, why would you stay in the room alone? Since I married you, I must take responsibility for you and support you. It is only right that I take care of you when you are not doing well. I am so much older than you. When I am old and bedridden, will you feed me medicine?"
Looking into those phoenix eyes, Meng Jinyao said earnestly, "Yes, I will."
Gu Jingxi nodded slightly: "That's it. It's all mutual. Everyone has their ups and downs."
Meng Jinyao paused for a moment, thinking that Gu Jingxi was truly the ideal husband in the world.
Born into a distinguished family, he was handsome and talented.
He is gentle and indifferent.
He has a strong sense of responsibility; even without love, he will still be responsible for his wife. He is gentle and considerate, a ray of sunshine in the darkness.
No wonder his name is Gu Jingxi; he lives up to his name.
A man like that, anyone who marries him will have a good life.
But the thought that whoever marries him will receive the same treatment makes me feel inexplicably uncomfortable.
Gu Jingxi finished filing her nails, put down the nail file, and saw that although she looked dejected, at least she no longer had the idea of hurting herself, so he asked, "Madam, are you feeling better?"
Meng Jinyao nodded: "Yes, much better. My husband is very good at taking care of people. No matter who is in a bad mood, meeting my husband can make them feel better."
At first glance, this sounds like a compliment.
But upon closer examination, something felt off; it seemed to be speaking in a sarcastic or unsettling tone.
Gu Jingxi raised an eyebrow: "Does Madam think I'm some kind of busybody who meddles in everyone's business?"
Meng Jinyao was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "If I weren't your wife, would you still care?"
The little girl stared at him intently, her eyes filled with resentment, as if he had done something wrong.
Gu Jingxi felt puzzled, but still thought about the question seriously and smiled, "Maybe so, otherwise what if the child starts crying?"
Meng Jinyao initially felt confused and a bit unreasonable, but hearing him say that made her feel better, though she still felt awkward. She stammered, "I'm not a child."
Gu Jingxi chuckled: "You're younger than my son, so how can you not be a child?"
Meng Jinyao: "..."
Okay, there's no doubt that Gu Jingxi is responsible.
But Gu Jingxi felt a sense of responsibility towards her, and also because she was young. In his eyes, she was still a child. Which elder wouldn't show concern if they saw a child in trouble?
