Chapter 464 Two Useless People
After the banquet ended, Meng Jinyao returned to the mansion with Madam Jiang.
On her way back to the mansion, Meng Jinyao listened to the lively sounds outside, lifted the curtain and peeked out. Although it was cold today, the liveliness outside was still as great as ever.
Suddenly, she saw a familiar figure and thought she was seeing things. But when she looked closely, she realized that it was indeed her third brother, Meng Chengxing.
She frowned slightly. The academy wasn't on holiday yet, and it wasn't time to leave school. Why was Meng Chengxing here with others instead of studying properly at the academy? There was nothing going on at the Meng family's side, so there was no reason for him to take leave for family matters. Could it be that he skipped school?
Seeing that she was frowning and staring in one direction, Jiang asked with concern, "Third Aunt, what's wrong?"
Meng Jinyao gently shook her head: "It's nothing."
Hearing her say that, Madam Jiang did not ask any further questions.
Meng Jinyao continued to stare in Meng Chengxing's direction, and only after seeing him enter the theater chatting and laughing with his companions did she turn her gaze away, ponder for a moment, and then curl the corners of her lips into a smile that was intriguing.
It's great that there's a useless, good-for-nothing father and a good-for-nothing son who doesn't know anything.
One hopes their son will become a dragon, while the other is utterly useless. When these two good-for-nothings get together, there might actually be some drama to watch.
She also saw through her father. Even though her father used to dote on Meng Chengxing, he would despise him as long as Meng Chengxing was useless, had no value, and could not bring benefits to the Meng family. Meng Chengxing would definitely be dissatisfied with his father's attitude, which would lead to conflict. She was looking forward to the father and son falling out and causing chaos.
Seeing her strange smile, Jiang became curious and turned to look in the direction she was looking, but didn't see anything. She became even more curious and asked, "Third Aunt, did you see something interesting?"
Meng Jinyao lowered the curtains and smiled, "I did see something interesting."
Jiang pressed, "What is it? I didn't see anything?"
Meng Jinyao replied, "It just happened, so you didn't see it. Actually, it's hard to say now. We'll probably only know if there's any drama to watch later."
Jiang asked, puzzled, "Third Aunt, what interesting thing can we only watch the play later?"
“Some things need to be viewed with a long-term perspective, but it’s also possible that I’m wrong.” After saying that, Meng Jinyao changed the subject, “I took you to the Shen family today, but I didn’t have time to spend with you. Are you getting used to it?”
Jiang replied, "Don't worry, Third Aunt, I'm fine. I even made two new friends at the banquet today, and they invited me to a flower viewing party in a few days."
Meng Jinyao nodded: "That's good then. I was just afraid you wouldn't be used to it."
Jiang smiled and said, "Although there are many people at the banquet whom I don't know, there are also people I do know. I can strike up a conversation with the people I know and then get to know the people I don't know."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao greatly admired Jiang Shi. People who take initiative like this are more likely to make friends, while she was the opposite; she was the passive type and rarely took the initiative to make a move.
-
The following afternoon.
Meng Jinyao delivered the newly made clothes to her mother-in-law. Since becoming pregnant, she had been going out less often and had nothing else to do. She spent most of her free time doing needlework, so she made a lot of clothes for her husband and mother-in-law. She made one set for her husband and then made another set for her mother-in-law.
When Madam Gu received the gift from her daughter-in-law, she was overjoyed. She didn't lack clothes, but the ones her daughter made for her were different from those made by the embroiderers in the mansion. Wearing them made her feel especially warm.
She gently stroked the soft fabric of the clothes and said softly, "Ayao, I told you before that you could let the embroiderer do it, why did you do it yourself again? I know you are a filial child, but don't tire yourself out."
When Meng Jinyao heard these familiar words, she remembered what Madam Qi had told her yesterday. She was sure that her mother-in-law was very happy now, and might even turn around and say to her old friends, "This is a dress that my daughter-in-law made for me."
She discovered her mother-in-law and husband's little secret and found the mother and son to be quite adorable. They seemed composed on the surface, but actually had an unsteady side, just like children.
Meng Jinyao readily replied, "Mother, how could this tire me out? It's just some needlework." As she spoke, she changed the subject, "Mother, you haven't finished telling your daughter-in-law the story you told last time. Why don't you tell her the sequel now?"
What Madam Gu was talking about were actually her experiences from her youth. Since it was rare for the younger generation to enjoy listening to her rambling, she immediately got excited and started telling her daughter-in-law stories non-stop.
Meng Jinyao listened to the story, occasionally interjecting with questions. The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law chatted happily, and in the evening, they stayed for dinner so that she wouldn't feel lonely eating alone at home. Actually, she hadn't thought there was anything wrong with eating alone before, but having gotten used to having company, she inevitably felt lonely eating alone.
After eating and drinking her fill, Meng Jinyao chatted with Old Madam Gu for a while before heading back, which served as a nice after-dinner stroll.
After she left, Madam Gu said to her trusted nanny, "Ayao is a clever, quick-witted, and filial child. How come the Meng family doesn't cherish such a good child? They have to torment her and push her further and further away. She stays so close to her parents' home, but she doesn't go back unless absolutely necessary. Look at Xuanling, she married nearby and often goes back to her parents' home to visit her elders."
Granny Feng replied, "The Meng family is blind, mistaking a fish eye for a pearl. They treat someone as cold and selfish as the Second Miss Meng, who didn't even visit her own mother after her death, as a treasure. It is said that marrying an unvirtuous wife will bring disaster to three generations. The Meng family's decline to this point is also largely due to Old Madam Meng."
Madam Gu sighed softly, feeling sorry for Old Master Meng. Fate sometimes plays tricks on people; a good man couldn't marry a virtuous wife, and a good woman couldn't marry a good husband. Old Master Meng and her husband were good friends. She had thought about befriending the wife of her husband's friend before, but she found that Madam Meng and she were not on the same wavelength, so she gave up and didn't force herself to associate with people she didn't like.
Granny Feng added, "Madam, you probably don't care if they cherish you. It's enough that you and the Marquis cherish you."
Upon hearing this, Madam Gu smiled and said, "Yao Ling and I will naturally cherish Yao. This child is a lucky star. Yao Ling smiles much more because of her, and she seems more vibrant."
Granny Feng said, "Because of you, Madam, the Marquis's illness has been cured, and you will soon be holding your grandson. Aren't you a lucky star?"
Madam Gu gently shook her head and replied, "Actually, I've long since given up on the question of whether I can hold my own grandson. But it's a good thing that Yao Ling's illness has improved. This way, A Yao won't have to suffer the injustice of being a widow for the rest of her life. Now that she can have a child, it's the icing on the cake. I'm at ease knowing that the couple is happy and content."
