Chapter Seventeen: Telling the Truth
Not long after, the gates of the mansion opened, and Meng Dongyuan, Madam Sun, and three younger relatives arrived at the gate.
Gu Jingxi also got off the carriage, glanced at his wife who was standing on the carriage and preparing to get off, thought for a moment, and then reached out his hand to her.
Seeing this, Meng Jinyao paused slightly, but quickly reacted and placed her hand in his palm. Under the watchful eyes of her family, she was helped down from the carriage by him.
When Meng Dongyuan and Madam Sun saw this scene, their expressions changed. They never expected that although their daughter's reputation was ruined, she was still favored by the Marquis of Changxing. At least her good looks were not wasted.
Meng Dongyuan smiled brightly, with a hint of ingratiation, and said, "Ayao, my dear son-in-law, you've finally arrived. Your grandmother has been waiting for a long time, and she was just talking about you."
Madam Sun looked Meng Jinyao up and down. Seeing that her face was rosy and she didn't look like she had been wronged, she said in a gentle tone, "My dear son-in-law, seeing that our Ayao looks so good, I know that you treat her very well. Since she got married, I, as her mother, have been worried sick. Seeing that she is doing well, I can finally put my mind at ease."
Hearing the couple address each other as "good son-in-law," Meng Jinyao couldn't help but admire them. Her father was only five years older than Gu Jingxi, and Sun was only two years older than Gu Jingxi. Yet, they could so easily utter the title "good son-in-law" to someone of the same generation and age.
Gu Jingxi glanced at them indifferently and said nonchalantly, "Is that so? Your Yongchang Marquis's mansion is tightly closed. I thought you didn't welcome my husband and me."
Meng Dongyuan's smile froze, and he subconsciously shifted the blame to Madam Sun, questioning, "Madam, didn't I tell you to send someone to wait at the door? Why is the door tightly closed?"
Sun was speechless, feeling wronged, but she could only take the blame. She explained with a forced smile, "Look at my memory. I was busy preparing for A-Yao's homecoming today, and I forgot about this. Please forgive me, my dear son-in-law."
Gu Jingxi, however, did not give them a way out, pushing them into an even more awkward situation: "They can forget something like this, which shows that Lord Meng and Madam Meng do not take us, husband and wife, seriously."
He glanced at the couple whose faces were frozen, and continued, "Even if you've forgotten, we've already arrived at the door, yet you've left us standing there. I think your Yongchang Marquis's Mansion has no intention of letting A-Yao in, does it? If I hadn't come, wouldn't A-Yao have gone back without even getting a cup of tea?"
His gaze was indifferent and distant, his tone grew colder, and it carried a hint of accusation.
Sun: "..."
Meng Dongyuan: "..."
Why are you just spouting such blunt truths?
The couple were speechless with shock at his words, their faces stiffening. The way he addressed them as "Lord Meng" and "Madam Meng" distanced them from each other, as if Gu Jingxi did not treat them as his parents-in-law.
The three younger people behind them also had different expressions.
A look of surprise flashed in Meng Jinyao's eyes. She had never expected Gu Jingxi to speak to her father and Sun Shi like that, and even say what she wanted to say. Seeing the couple speechless after being rebuked, she felt a surge of secret pleasure.
After a moment, Meng Dongyuan, suppressing his embarrassment, awkwardly explained, "What are you saying, my dear son-in-law? Ayao is my first child, and I love her the most. Today is the day she returns to her parents' home. Even if you are too busy with official duties to accompany her, we will not turn her away."
Sun quickly chimed in, "Yes, I was so busy today that I forgot." As she spoke, she winked at Meng Jinyao, hoping that Meng Jinyao would be perceptive and say something nice to smooth things over.
Meng Jinyao pretended not to see it, standing obediently beside Gu Jingxi, looking like a docile little wife.
