"Xiao Yingwei, watch your words." The man in front didn't turn around, and his voice was a little muffled. "All information related to the Bai family is concentrated in this building, and Bai himself is of course no exception."
"Since it's right here, why didn't you bring me here?"
"The Bai family's identity is so sensitive right now, and you're rushing to meet them now? Do you think the Xiao family isn't deeply involved in this matter?"
Xiao Nan paused, suddenly realizing that he had almost forgotten the danger in the palace that day.
It was difficult to work around the emperor, but she hadn't been so lazy when she was in Lingxi. Now, in just a few months, she had become at ease.
She restrained her expression and said in a deep voice.
"I'm looking for her because I have something important to ask her. If you're worried, just watch from the side."
"We're here." Ding Weixiang stopped and turned to look at her. "Don't take advantage of His Majesty's protection and act like a fool. When it comes to a matter of life and death, His Majesty won't side with you."
What is this life and death issue? Xiao Nanhui found it a little funny.
If what she said is true, then what that person despises most is probably the so-called justice of life and death.
She waved her hand in front of her eyes and frowned.
"It's so dark."
"Your Majesty has ordered that no lamps be lit here."
Ding Weixiang stretched out his hand and tapped the stone wall beside him a few times. Then, a sound of footsteps accompanied by fire approached from the other side.
"Lieutenant Ding, this way please."
The visitor confirmed Ding Weixiang's badge and used a torch to light the way forward.
This was a stone chamber very similar to the previous morgue, except that it was separated by an iron cage that reached from the ceiling to the ground. The torches could not illuminate the depths of the cage, and it seemed as if there was no one in the darkness.
"Could I have a word with her alone?"
The guard didn't move, and his voice was indeed uncompromising.
"Your Majesty has ordered that no one be left alone with the Bai family's daughter."
Xiao Nanhui had to take a step back.
"I won't go in. I'll just ask a few questions through the railing. It'll take at most half an incense stick. Is that okay?"
The guard looked at Ding Weixiang, and the familiar confusion and hesitation on his face reappeared. After a long pause, he muttered, "Only half an incense stick's time. Not even a moment longer."
Xiao Nanhui showed gratitude: "Thank you, Lieutenant Ding."
The guard said no more, left a torch, and disappeared at the door with Ding Weixiang.
Xiao Nanhui waited for a while, and when he heard the footsteps fade away, he picked up a torch and approached the only cell in the stone chamber.
"He's guilty of treason and regicide, yet he's still standing before me with all his limbs intact. It seems he really does like you."
Before she could see the person, the other person's voice was already heard.
From the moment she stepped into the cell, Xiao Nanhui was mentally prepared. No matter what the other party said to shake her or attack her, she would respond calmly.
But this first sentence disturbed her heart.
She was not good at this, and Bai Yun obviously knew it.
"The Emperor wouldn't send you to interrogate me. Did you come here on your own accord?"
"Yes." She decided to be more direct. "I didn't come here to talk nonsense with you today. I just want to ask you a few questions."
"What if I don't answer?"
"The question is mine, the answer is yours."
A burst of laughter came from the darkness, followed by the sound of iron chains dragging on the ground.
A person with disheveled hair and covered in blood appeared in the light. Her face looked even paler than before, as if she had completely lost her life. Her dull eyes closed tightly before opening.
That is the reaction of people who have stayed in the dark for a long time.
"Before I answer your question, you have to do me a favor."
"What's up?"
After a series of rustling sounds, the pale and thin hand picked up a nearly dried-up oil lamp and handed it to Xiao Nanhui through the black iron railings.
“Light it up.”
Xiao Nanhui hesitated for a moment, then moved the torch to light the oil lamp.
The oil lamp lit up with a bean-sized flame, so faint that it seemed like it would go out in the next second.
The woman held it carefully in her palm, as if that little bit of fire could bring a touch of warmth.
She didn't care that the heated lamp oil became hot, and the flames cast a little light on her face, making her look less fragile and more sneaky.
"What do you want to know?"
Xiao Nanhui lowered the torch so that the flame could illuminate the woman's face.
She needs to judge whether the other party's answer is a lie.
"Is Xu Rui your man?"
Bai Yun sighed, his breath blowing the flames, and it sounded like he was coughing softly.
“Many times, people would rather believe what they see with their own eyes than the facts they have sought after.”
"Answer my question."
Bai Yun shook his head and said slowly: "I don't know him, and he doesn't know me."
For some reason, Xiao Nanhui felt that this answer was somewhat true.
Taking a deep breath, she asked another question.
"What you said that day in Tingfeng Tower, was it true, or were you just trying to distract me so you could assassinate me?"
"If I tell you it's true, will you believe it?"
"I'll verify it myself."
The woman with disheveled hair combed her hair with her fingers and cleaned the mud from her fingernails with the help of the bright light, as if she was the only one in the cell.
"Then my answer isn't important. Besides, there are some things I only know a little bit about. If you're not afraid of death, go ahead and find out."
The other party answered the question irrelevantly, but Xiao Nanhui heard a different signal.
She must know something.
"Was the secret seal the reason for the annihilation of the Xiao family? How much do you know about the secret seal? Is it also related to your Bai family..."
