Less than a hundred miles west of Quecheng Jifu is Yu'an County, which is surrounded by mountains and green hills.
This late spring rain came very suddenly, drizzling, sometimes heavy and sometimes light. After three days and three nights, it gradually turned into a drizzle like cow hair.
This is the unique weather of Yu'an. From the beginning of spring to the official beginning of winter every year, the water vapor-containing clouds moving from the south to the north will be trapped in this covered land. Over time, the grass and trees here are lush, the forests are like waterfalls, the birds and animals you see are all rare, and the breathing is all graceful.
Such a land, once nourished by gentle rain and gentle breeze, has now become a desolate ruin. The former city walls are covered by green moss, and even a glimpse of its former prosperity is no longer visible.
Yu'an means a place with abundant rainfall and long-lasting peace and stability.
But since the bloody rebel fighting more than ten years ago, Yu'an County has existed in name only. Apart from the garrison that is more tightly guarded than other counties, only the continuous rain throughout the four seasons is left, silently washing away the blood that has soaked the land.
The mud soaked by rain could no longer hold any more water, and shallow puddles formed on the official road. When the vehicles in front passed over them, the puddles turned into mud ditches. If the official road had not been filled with pebbles and gravel, the wheels of the vehicles behind would have been deeply stuck in them.
Jixiang's temper worsened again. He hated the feeling of his hooves stuck in mud and water, which reminded him of the cold spring rain on the way to Huozhou that year.
Although the team ahead had good horses and good carriages, the rain made everyone slow down a bit.
The surrounding scenery became blurred, and the sky in front was a gray that seemed to have no end.
Since the first night he arrived in Yu'an, Xiao Nanhui was awakened from his sleep by the pain.
At first she thought it was a nightmare, but after taking a few breaths she realized that the pain not only did not dissipate, but became clearer and more distinct as she regained consciousness.
Her legs felt like they had been beaten with wooden clubs, and the joints of her ankles ached and felt cold. The scarred skin looked normal, but inside she was tormenting her.
It was a pain that pierced through the bones, relentless and close, like a shadow. It was bearable during the day, but in the middle of the night, when no one was around, it became unbearable, affecting even the act of breathing.
That was the wound she'd sustained in Bijiang. Hao Bai had healed her bones, but he couldn't heal the pain deep within them. Whenever dampness spread, it would bring out the old wound.
Xiao Nanhui knew this pain would likely stay with her for the rest of her life. It would come back to her during the rainy seasons, a subtle reminder that the spirits roaming the desolate lands were not illusory, and the bones buried beneath millions of hectares of sand would never decay.
She was changed after all.
Whether it is the heart or the body.
She took out a half-deflated wine bag from Jixiang's back, and after taking a few sips of rice wine, the pain in her legs subsided a little. She fell into a deep sleep again. At dawn the next day, she was not alert enough, and she didn't wake up until Xu Shu was standing in front of her.
Xu Shu's boots were on the hem of her clothes, and the soles of the boots were stained with some fresh horse manure.
Seeing Xiao Nanhui looking up at him, he pretended to be surprised.
"Hey, I'm sorry I didn't see Xiao Cancheng here."
Xiao Nanhui paused, slightly bent his painful right leg, and exerted force suddenly, pulling the hem of his clothes out from under the boot, leaving a brown mark across the middle of his official uniform.
Fortunately, the official uniform of this charioteer is made of dark and wear-resistant material in consideration of riding and shooting, so it is not very conspicuous unless you get close to it.
Xiao Nan casually brushed off the mud, glanced at Xu Shu's sarcastic face, and got up without saying a word.
In the past, she would have used her Iron Kick and added a set of boxing techniques to deal with this annoying brat, but today, perhaps because she was not in the right mood, she suddenly did not want to pay any attention to him.
Xu Shu was annoying, but that was all he was. Compared to Yan Zi, the murderous Yan Zi, the haunting Pu Hu Na, and Bai Yun Na, who won without a single drop of blood, he was truly...far inferior.
Xiao Nanhui walked straight to the stream beside the camp, leaving the face that had changed from sarcasm to surprise there.
Xu Shu had anticipated many possible reactions from Xiao Nanhui, but he had never anticipated this one.
He judged that the woman in front of him might be enduring something, so he led the horse and followed her to the stream.
Xiao Nanhui squatted by the stream to wash, and Xu Shu let the horse play in the water on her.
She pretended not to see and continued to wash her face, still not wanting to say a word to the other person.
After a while, Xu Shu's voice finally fell lightly.
"Charioteers are always strong and brave. I heard that Xiao Cancheng was tortured before, so his shoulders and arms are probably useless. If he can't ride or shoot, how can he be worthy of this position?"
A dog will always eat shit, and Xu Shu will always be a servile person.
A concluding statement suddenly flashed through Xiao Nanhui's mind. He felt like laughing, and then he actually laughed out loud.
This smile completely angered Xu Shu.
He raised his eyebrows, and the scar at the corner of his eyebrows rose up with a hint of provocation.
"I heard you caused trouble again at Prince Xuanyuan's mansion a few days ago, causing the second young master to be grounded. It seems you haven't learned your lesson from Jiao Song's incident. Or maybe your good adoptive father, after hooking up with his old lover, has just given up on you and is leaving you to fend for yourself."
Xu Shu always knew how to hurt Xiao Nanhui's heart.
But this time, he miscalculated.
Xiao Nanhui's face was as calm as a mirror and her heart was as still as water. She even took the time to be distracted and think that the half bag of rice wine was enough for her to drink for a few days.
She had been fighting with Xu Shu for so many years, but she suddenly understood a lot of things overnight.
