Chapter 142: Parting (Part 2)

Bai Yun had already fainted and no matter how he called out softly, there was no response.

Yan Zi gracefully descended from the carriage and was about to turn around to explore the road ahead when suddenly, she heard some movement from the cliff behind her.

At first, he thought it was his companion who had returned, but then he quickly realized that something was wrong.

He climbed up the mountain path with muddy hands, and then a figure approached like a mountain evil ghost.

The sound of falling rain covered up her footsteps and breathing, but it could not conceal her murderous intent.

A flash of lightning streaked across the night sky, illuminating the dark shadow.

The woman's long, tied-up hair was half loose, wet from the rain and sticking to her face like tattered cotton. She held only a dagger in her hand. As she rushed along the thorny, gravelly cliffs, her arms and neck were covered in cuts of varying sizes. There was a crack on her lip, perhaps from a fall.

Yet, all this embarrassment couldn't diminish the rage in her eyes. Bloodshot from not closing them for so long, they were the color of hatred and rage.

"You are..." Yan Zi frowned slightly, finally remembering something, "Are you someone close to the emperor?"

Xiao Nanhui remained silent. She didn't want to say another word to him.

There was only one voice in her heart.

Kill him, kill him, kill him!

He pushed hard with his feet, and the arrow from the crossbow in his right sleeve was aimed at the opponent's vital points. At the same time, he held the dagger in his left hand and went straight to the bloody ribs of the man in purple.

She had discarded all her martial arts techniques, and even more so, the principle of attacking while defending herself. Now, only hatred and anger drove her exhausted body.

With a crisp "ding" sound, the flying crossbow arrow broke into two pieces. Zi Yi did not move, and sank the hilt of the sword hard, hitting the woman three inches below the shoulder bone. The other hand reached out like a ghost and accurately pinched the ulna of the hand holding the weapon.

The sharp blade extending from the fingertips was only half an inch away from the man's body, but it could not move forward any further.

Xiao Nanhui was unwilling to give up, so he bent his wrist regardless of the consequences and attacked the man again despite the pain of his ulna being crushed. However, the man had already turned the sword and swung it steadily from bottom to top.

Xiao Nanhui was knocked out by the huge force, and crashed into the cliff behind him, spitting out blood instantly.

"It's said that Xu Tu's silk, woven with double warps, can block sharp energy. Now I see that it's truly worthy of its reputation." Yan Zi's eyes fell on the woman's stained dress. "This dress of yours saved your life, but next time, I can cut your throat directly."

The woman spitting blood supported her body and crawled up in the mud. Her black robe had been torn into rags, and only the buttons protecting her neck were still firmly in place.

She remained silent, her eyes filled with endless hatred, a hatred that had blinded her to pain, her judgment of danger, and her desire to live.

She just wanted to kill the person in front of her, and she would pay any price for it.

She roared and pounced on him, abandoning all her movements and steps, hoping only to drive the dagger in her hand into the enemy's vital point.

Yan Zi narrowed his eyes, and the long sword in his hand hummed softly. The sword energy brought by the sword edge forced the rain curtain apart, and the tip of the sword with starlight rushed forward like a dragon.

clang.

Xiao Nanhui felt a numbness in her wrist, and the dagger dropped from her hand. At the same time, the sword that was coming straight at her was deflected, and the overflowing sword energy severed the reins, causing the two horses pulling the cart to become agitated as if startled.

Then she heard that familiar voice not far above her head.

"You can't kill her."

Yan Zi glanced at Xiao Zhun, as if weighing the price to pay to end this trouble.

After a moment, he turned around and jumped onto the carriage, reconnecting the severed bridle.

"If she follows me again, I will have no choice but to kill her."

Xiao Zhun didn't say anything else, but just looked at the woman standing alone on the cliff.

"Godfather..." She stammered, and the light seemed to return to her eyes briefly.

However, the next moment, Xiao Jun flew onto the carriage.

He stood at the rear of the car, half turned to look at her.

His face was blurred in the darkness, and it seemed that mud and rain fell into her eyes, making it difficult for her to see the person in front of her.

"Go back and don't follow me anymore."

She was almost frozen in place, and when she noticed the carriage start to move forward, she suddenly rushed forward like a madman and grabbed the carriage's wheels.

"Godfather, come back with me..."

There was a tremor in her voice, more like a humble plea.

Yan Zi watched coldly and drove the carriage forward. The woman at the rear of the carriage was dragged on the ground, leaving a long trail.

She stubbornly refused to let go, her eyes fixed on the man standing at the rear of the car, as if this could make him change his mind, as if this could tell her that all the despair and pain at this moment was just a nightmare.

Finally, the figure slowly squatted down, and gently held her hand that was holding onto the wheel with his rough palm.

Just like many years ago, he rode his horse over, took her hand in the Gobi Desert, brought her to this city, and gave her a home.

"Nanhui, I can't go back with you."

"Why, why not?"

She knew why.

She already knew the answer, but she still wanted to ask him.

How she wished she could hear a different answer from him.

How she wished he would tell her that he just had something to do and would be back soon.

"From now on, take good care of yourself. If we ever meet again in the future..."
