Chapter 145 Born Alone (Part 1)

The sun is setting in the west, the You hour has not passed yet, and the Xu hour is approaching.

Shan Jiangfei carried a simple food box and walked up to the pavilion on the west side of Jingbo Tower.

This was the first time he delivered food to anyone other than that person after entering the palace.

There wasn't much in the box, just two dishes, a soup, and a plate of snacks, but it was the cleanest and safest meal in the world.

After turning three stone steps and passing through the dark stone corridor, the red light of the setting sun comes into view.

He first subconsciously looked at the stone couch, and found that there was no one on it, so he turned his gaze towards the railing.

Then he saw a woman in a plain gauze dress standing on the railing, her dress blowing in the wind making her figure sway precariously.

Shan Jiangfei was stunned, and the basket in his hand fell to the ground.

"Miss Xiao!"

The woman heard the noise and turned around in surprise.

There was a hint of unconcealable fear on the face of the eunuch in black clothes, and his kind eyes stared at her, making her feel a little uneasy.

She climbed down from the railing, spread out her palms, and looked like a child who had done something wrong.

"Attendant Shan, I was working on this and didn't notice you coming..."

Shan Jiangfei's eyes fell on the other person's hand, and he found a baby bird with a yellow beak and not yet fully grown feathers lying in the palm of his hand.

"Just now, it fell down from above. I wanted to put it back, but it was a little out of reach."

As the woman spoke, she pointed to the bird's nest between the lintel and the eaves. A few furry little heads could be vaguely seen at the entrance of the nest, huddled together in silence.

The eunuch's expression finally returned to normal. He walked a few steps closer, reached out and carefully took the baby bird, looked at it for a while, and said softly.

"It's a swallow."

Her face stiffened for a moment, followed by a sadness that was difficult to conceal.

Swallows make their homes under the eaves, which is a sign of good luck and joy.

It’s a pity that someone borrowed this name and took away her good fortune and joy with their own hands.

So she would rather not believe the hopes that people attached to these beaks and feathers, and instead regard them as the most ordinary creatures in the world.

This is how she saw the world for the past three days.

She saw birds building nests under the eaves, flying back and forth with slender twigs in their beaks. Their delicate down feathers trembled gently in the wind, soft yet strong.

She saw mayflies being born and dying in the morning, and plants being bathed in dew and sunlight.

She saw that the water in the lake was sometimes sparkling and sometimes calm, clear blue when it was sunny and dark and turbid when it was cloudy.

She saw every change in the light of the sun as it rose and set, and also saw the moon's eternal light shining behind the colorful clouds.

It is said that after people have experienced the fate of life and death, they will have many questions.

She thought it would take her three to five years to figure out those problems and get real relief, but at dusk on the third day, she stood up from the railing.

Because she saw the baby bird fall.

She thought she wouldn't be able to get out of the abyss so quickly, but before her mind was ready, her body was already ready to stand up again.

Maybe thinking can't bring those answers, but instinct can.

She felt a slight itch in her palm, and she looked down at the tiny creature squirming in her palm, her fingers filled with a sense of helpless caution and prudence.

Shan Jiangfei saw this and felt relieved.

"Leave the bird to me. I'll send someone up with a ladder later. It's best for you to eat early, young lady. It's uncomfortable to eat when the food gets cold."

Shan Jiangfei picked up the food box from the ground. When he was about to remove the lid, he found that half of the two dishes in the box had been spilled when it was dropped. It was obviously inedible.

"I'm clumsy and accidentally ruined something. Please wait a moment, young lady. I'll go prepare another one."

Shan Jiangfei packed up the food box, held the baby bird in his sleeve, and was about to leave.

She hesitated for a moment, then called out to the other person.

"Excuse me...where is His Majesty now?"

He paused and spoke truthfully.

"Your Majesty is in Jingbo Tower right now."

In fact, Your Majesty has been in Jingbo Tower for the past three days.

But the woman didn't know, and she breathed a sigh of relief, as if secretly glad that she asked at the right time.

"There's no need to rush about dinner. Please, Shan Changshi, lead the way. I have something I want to discuss with Your Majesty."

God knows how long he had been waiting for these words.

The eunuchs in black robes were quick to follow the advice.

"Please follow me, young lady."

******************

Another long corridor and dark tunnel.

I don't know how long I walked along the mottled stone wall, but Dan Jiangfei's footsteps in front finally stopped.

A candle light flickered in front, illuminating the entrance to the stone chamber.

She blinked, stepped in, and then looked around.

Actually there is nothing to see.

Here, like everywhere else, everything was made of stone. The stone desk, the stone chairs, the stone lamp. He sat behind the stone desk, his head bowed as he reviewed memorials, his face as hard and cold as stone.

She knew that he was probably a little angry with her.

But as to what exactly she was angry about, she wasn't sure.

Perhaps she should act more gently like an ordinary woman, go up to him and say some nice words, and listen to his nice words, so that both of them would be happy.

But she knew she couldn't do it. Just thinking about that situation made her hair stand on end.

She is also a person with military prowess and has been to the battlefield. To put it nicely, she values dignity more than life. To put it bluntly, she is as stubborn as a donkey.
