Chapter 18 Zhu Mingyu Appears (Part 1)

Of the route Zhu Mingji was going to take, only this short section would pass by the edge of the old city.

A tributary of the Hun River flows through the old city. The frequency of the float's swaying increases significantly when it reaches the bridge. The houses on both sides are dark and exude a sense of death, with the ruins of past burnt-out houses still mixed in. The uneven eaves are like skinny hands reaching out to the road, often narrowly brushing past the float. If someone is on the roof, they can jump onto the car with a light leap. Xiao Nanhui couldn't help but be extremely alert, paying close attention to the darkness on both sides.

The wooden wheels bumped against the stone road, and it seemed even noisier than before.

Suddenly, Xiao Nanhui felt a strange noise coming from the bottom of the float under his feet.

The sound was very slight, like the sound of a small stone bouncing off and hitting the shaft of a cart.

But, at this moment...

Xiao Nanhui suddenly looked up, and a hand with a stainless steel knuckle guard penetrated the floor of the top floor of the float in front. The next second, a figure emerged and slowly turned around.

Under the moonlight, Xiao Nanhui narrowed his eyes.

The man was wearing a mask exactly like hers.

This is well prepared.

The lighting at the ceremony was dim, so the spectators would not notice the subtle differences in the priests' stature. Furthermore, the priests wore masks throughout the ceremony. All they had to do was kill her, and they would be the last person to touch the sacrifice without anyone noticing. No one would know who was beneath the mask.

The man's eyes met Xiao Nanhui's for a moment, then he swooped down like a swallow onto the float Xiao Nanhui was on. Xiao Nanhui naturally couldn't let the other party succeed so easily, so he took advantage of the man's lack of momentum to strike first.

However, the float was already narrow, making full-scale combat impossible. The fake priest seemed adept at fighting in this confined space, his hidden blades wielded with insidious and vicious force. Xiao Nanhui had no choice but to temporarily abandon his attack on the lower body and switch to a small grappling technique to wrest the weapon from his grasp.

It didn't matter that she made this move. The touch was soft and smooth. The person who replaced her was actually a woman.

Just as she was distracted, a thin thread came from behind and instantly wrapped around Xiao Nanhui's ankles and arms. Then a huge force pulled her up, and she tilted off the float.

In a split second, she only had time to casually pull out the iron rod from the dummy in the attic below, and when she fell onto the roof of a small building beside the road, she quickly inserted the iron rod into the tiles and barely managed to stabilize her body.

In the time it took to go back and forth, the ceremonial car team had already turned the corner.

The noisy crowd and the flames that shot up into the sky blocked people's vision. Coupled with the fake "priest" who took over, no one in the float team noticed that Xiao Nanhui was attacked. They continued to move forward, turned a corner and walked into the last north-south avenue.

Xiao Nanhui felt uneasy, as if he was being cautious but still fell into someone else's trap.

Her attackers obviously didn't want her to chase the procession, so they came back and forced her from the roof into another adjacent street.

Seeing the procession walking away, Xiao Nanhui finally had the intention to kill. The ordinary iron rod removed from the float flashed in her hand as fast as lightning, and pierced one of them in the process. After pulling it back, it continued to move forward and pierced into the tendons and veins at the ankle of another person.

After a scream, the two men finally fell to the ground. Xiao Nanhui had no intention of fighting anymore, so he picked up the iron rod and started chasing after them.

Although it was only across the street, it was now deserted. The cold moonlight cast long shadows on the houses on either side of the road, making the path beneath his feet mottled and unpredictable. The noise from across the street could be heard faintly, but for a moment, only Xiao Nanhui's footsteps could be heard on the bluestone slabs.

She gasped and looked around, feeling that something was about to come out of the empty darkness.

Finally, there were slight noises coming from the roofs around her, one, two, thin and dense, like a net enveloping her.

Under the moonlight, more than a dozen shadows appeared on the houses on both sides, following Xiao Nanhui like ghosts.

Although her vision was limited in the darkness, she was extremely sensitive to sounds. She didn't need to look back. Just by listening to the footsteps, she could roughly judge how many people were there and where they were.

A hundred steps away from the next east-west intersection, a fire dragon roared past on the avenue parallel to hers. Xiao Nanhui broke into a run. She had to find a way to shake off the people behind her and get back to the sacrificial procession's float.

But......

Wasn't it agreed that there would only be a few people at most?! How could she possibly shake off such a large group?

whoosh.

The sound of breaking air came from behind.

Xiao Nan didn't even turn back, but kept walking and swung his hand back.

With a clang, the iron rod and the cold arrow collided, and sparks burst out in the darkness.

The arrow missed its target and embedded itself in the doorpost under the eaves of a nearby house. The arrow had a strange green phosphorescence, and it was obvious that it had been poisoned.

After a gentle probing, a sudden attack followed like a rain of arrows pouring down from the sky. Dozens of cold arrows flew out simultaneously, piercing Xiao Nanhui's back.

Seeing that there was no escape, Xiao Nanhui had to stop and swung the iron stick in his hand tightly. With a series of "ding ding" sounds, all the cold arrows were shot down. However, the shadow with a knife in front of him had taken advantage of the momentum and came to the front, and in an instant he started fighting with Xiao Nanhui.

The two sides faced each other, both using all their strength. The opponent used killing moves everywhere, and Xiao Nanhui only attacked and did not defend. He went straight for the throats of the three people in front of him, leaving blood holes wherever the iron stick passed.

One group fell down and another group came up. The iron stick in Xiao Nanhui's hand was just ordinary black iron after all, which was not as good as the tempered steel in the opponent's hand. When he used all his strength to collide with the opponent, a section of it was cut off. Gradually, he had no weapon in his hand.

The uninvited guests, masked in black cloth, were all skilled assassins, seeking a quick kill without hesitation. The leader wielded a particularly vicious weapon: a chain with a golden hook at the end, making it impossible to get close when attacking from a distance. Xiao Nanhui's repeated attempts to seize the weapon were unsuccessful.
