Chapter 24: Rotten Grass Becomes Firefly

She said softly, "Let go."

Zhongli didn't say anything, but he didn't move either.

Xiao Nanhui was touched for a moment, but then she thought of the jade seal that she was holding tightly in her other hand, and she also understood why the other party did this.

But even so, when she stared at the hand wearing the Buddhist beads, she felt that it was the hand of the Buddha.

May Buddha bless them, they will not die here.

Ta-da, ta-da, ta-da.

There was a sound approaching.

Xiao Nanhui suddenly opened his eyes and moved his ears.

Ta-da, ta-da, ta-da.

The sound was getting closer, coming from behind, and I could faintly hear the subtle sound of grass being crushed.

It sounded like the sound of horse hooves hitting the ground, and Xiao Nanhui felt a surge of joy. Jixiang's nose was extremely sensitive; perhaps the Shrike had called in help.

"auspicious?"

The voice behind her stopped, and then there was a warm breath on the back of her neck, and a slightly wet nose sniffed the top of her hair.

Not auspicious.

Jixiang knew the smell of her body and would never sniff her like that.

She was a little panicked and squeezed Zhongli Jing's hand hard. He slowly opened his eyes and looked behind her head, but didn't say anything.

Xiao Nanhui's eyes rolled around, not knowing what was behind her. The next second, she felt the clothes on her shoulders being bitten by a huge force and dragged out of the quagmire. She and Zhongli's hands, which had been holding each other, were separated by this external force.

Before Xiao Nan could struggle, she was pulled out of the quagmire. Her lungs, which had been congested for a long time, finally began to breathe smoothly. She gasped for breath, propped up her body which was heavy due to being filled with mud, and looked up.

It was a young male deer with a pair of big, wet eyes. It gently shook its huge antlers, raised its hooves and walked towards Zhongli Jing, pulling him out using the same method.

Xiao Nanhui hurried forward to help Zhongli Jing up. When he looked up again, the deer had already walked away, and its antlers were hidden in the half-high wormwood, like a lonely monster.

In this wonderful moment of surviving a disaster, Xiao Nanhui whispered two words: "Thank you."

This is said to the deer and also to Zhongli Jing.

However, the other person seemed to have no time to pay attention to her thanks at the moment. He was struggling to take off his coat. The mud had soaked the fabric, and the belts were tangled together. It was wet and heavy and wrapped around his body, making it impossible to take it off.

Seeing this, Xiao Nanhui didn't think much about it. He walked up, grabbed the clothes on his body with both hands and pulled them hard to both sides. The "mud clothes" was finally torn into two pieces.

Zhongli was stunned for a moment, then he looked down at the shirt he was wearing. When he looked up again, his face had a very strange expression.

Xiao Nanhui belatedly looked at the two pieces of rags in his hand, wondering if he had frightened the other person. He patiently explained, "You can't take them off like that. It's a waste of energy. When you're out and about, don't be so particular."

Zhongli was silent for a moment and uttered two words.

"That's all."

After saying that, without even looking at Xiao Nanhui, he stood up and looked around.

Xiao Nanhui thought the other party was just being awkward. He lowered his head, picked up the jade seal that he had obtained with great difficulty, and held it in his hands. He also looked around and asked: "Why, do you know the way out?"

"have no idea."

The other party answered as if it was a matter of course. Xiao Nanhui almost rolled his eyes and said, "You don't look like you don't know..."

Zhongli didn't say anything, but took a few steps and stood behind Xiao Nanhui.

Xiao Nanhui discovered that this man was surprisingly tall when he stood up straight, with a straight back and broad and flat shoulders. Although he was not as strong as a warrior, he did not look like a weak and sick person.

He stood very close, his chest almost touching her back, so close that Xiao Nanhui could feel the heat rising from his body, and that unique smell was even more obvious.

For some reason, Xiao Nanhui subconsciously held her breath, but Zhongli actually gestured for her to look deep into the swamp.

Tonight there are clouds rolling in the sky, the moonlight is dim, and every blade of grass and tree in the swamp has lost its outline and turned into a chaotic mass.

Suddenly, a pale blue light appeared in the chaos. It slowly rose and circled, lingering among the rotten water plants and shallow streams.

Another blue light lit up and flew after the previous one, followed by the third, the fourth... Blue lights lit up one after another, hovering and dancing in the grass, causing the swamp that was originally shrouded in darkness to glow with faint light.

"It's a firefly."

"Um."

Zhongli actually took a few steps forward. Xiao Nanhui nervously grabbed him and said, "The visibility is worse than daytime right now. If you keep walking like this, we'll end up back in the pit."

Zhongli actually looked down at the hand tightly gripping his arm and tried to sound normal: "Wei Xiang was looking for him nearby during the day and won't be back anytime soon. Waiting here is like waiting for death."

Only then did Xiao Nanhui realize that the body under his command was shaking.

The temperature dropped, and he, a man with no martial arts skills, wore wet clothes and had been lying in the mud with her for several hours. He really couldn't wait any longer.

But what should I do? Find something to explore the way? In the darkness, how long will it take to find the way?

"Have you ever heard of rotten grass becoming fireflies?"

Xiao Nanhui nodded.

Fireflies like places with rotten and moist aquatic plants, and they come out to look for food when night falls.

"Avoid places with fireflies, which should be solid ground."
