As night falls, the unique coolness of autumn emerges from the red soil, eroding the temperature left by the scorching sun during the day.
Xiao Nanhui wrapped himself in a coarse wool blanket and curled up in a chair, watching the two men in front of him who had zero hands-on ability attacking each other with words.
"I've said it before, covering it up like this won't work. Now that they've come knocking on my door, I want to see how you're going to deal with it."
Wu Xiaoliu held a dozen papyri in his hand, on which were written Hao Bai's freshly-written sour poems. "Countermeasures? How dare you ask us for countermeasures? What's written on these papers? Is it a countermeasure?"
Hao Bai exerted force and the fan in his hand almost broke into two pieces.
He made it himself these days by stealing the kite-making materials from the children in the village. Although it doesn't look as good as his previous works by famous artists, it has about 70% to 80% of his previous "style" when held in his hand.
"Why should I offer a solution?! What does this have to do with me? A good appointment turned into a prison sentence. Has anyone ever asked me how I feel?!"
Wu Xiaoliu still had a coarse apron tied around his belly. These days, he not only had to take care of Xiao Nanhui's food and daily life, but he also had to serve that quack doctor who put on makeup. He had been holding a lot of anger in his heart for a long time, and now he found the fan particularly annoying, and his tone became sour.
"We come from poor families, and we're not as wealthy as Mr. Hao. We're treated like we're in jail, even though we're being well-fed and well-fed every day. If there's a natural disaster or man-made calamity in the future, I'm afraid we won't be the first to run away."
Hao Bai couldn't stand this sarcastic tone of voice and was about to start yelling like a shrew: "You fat man, how dare you frame me? Do you really think I don't know where the injury on her foot came from? I saw you as kind, but I didn't expect you to be such a black-hearted person. I'd rather go out and sleep with those cattle and sheep than live under the same roof with you again!"
Ever since he came to this damn place, he had been furious every three days and slightly furious every two days. In just over a month, he had completely severed the noble and indifferent bloodline of the Qu family.
Wu Xiaoliu had clearly just finished warming up, and was already rolling up his sleeves, ready for a three-hundred-round battle. "You were the one who suggested this, so now is the day. Mr. Hao, please pack up now, and I'll definitely give you the most comfortable spot in the sheepfold..."
The woman who had been picking her feet nearby finally couldn't stand it anymore.
"You two, are you done yet? We're only seven or eight people, and you've managed to scare the two of you like this. Who can I count on from now on?"
The two men fell silent instantly, but the silence only lasted for a moment.
Hao Bai, for some unknown reason, turned his gunfire on her. "They're just inspecting your territory. At most, they'll steal some food from you. Just give it to them. Why do you keep them in the village? They're just asking for trouble."
Xiao Nanhui rolled his eyes at him lazily. "You know shit. This village has changed hands. They won't go back until they get to the bottom of it. If you rush them out, won't that just tell the world there's trouble with this village?"
Wu Xiaoliu still looked reluctant: "Even so, they won't let it go. They're being easy to talk to us this time, but I'm afraid there will be trouble in the future."
"You'll have to bear with it." She changed her position, hanging upside down on the edge of the bed, doing a strange supine exercise. "You two should exercise more. If anything goes wrong in the future, no one will be able to take care of each other. Survival depends on luck, escape depends on skill. You two must be able to run ten miles at least, then I can feel at ease."
When Hao Bai thought about these distant and frightening days, his face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot.
"It's a waste of time to talk to you. It's like talking to a cow!"
After saying that, he turned away angrily. The paper fan in his hand had a hole in it due to the force, but he didn't care. He slammed the door and walked away angrily.
Xiao Nanhui sighed inwardly, but her face remained expressionless. She began to pick at the bandage on her foot again.
Her feet had been itching badly these past few days, and she thought it was a sign that they were almost healed, so she decided to open them and take a look today.
When they had just dismantled half of it, the fat man probably felt that there was nothing left for him to do, so he turned around and left.
"Xiaoliu."
Wu Xiaoliu shuddered all over.
This woman rarely called him by his name. She usually called him by name. Now that she called him by his name, it was probably not a good thing.
"Please stay for a moment. I have something to ask you."
Hao Bai glanced at Wu Xiaoliu with a look of gloating, then walked out the door with ease, and finally closed the door in a very obscene manner.
The room was quiet for a moment. Xiao Nanhui stood up from the chair. The remaining white cloth on her feet fell to the ground, and she kicked it aside.
The injury on her foot had almost healed, but she still limped a little. She no longer used the crutches when there were not many people around.
At this point, she was still very satisfied with the skills of the barefoot doctor Hao Bai.
She raised her hand and picked up the wick, and the oil lamp that was about to go out lit up again, illuminating her face with flickering light.
Wu Xiaoliu stood by the door and watched secretly. He suddenly felt that perhaps the wind and sand in the past few months had worn away her edges. Her eyebrows and eyes looked much more resolute and sharp than when she first arrived in Suyan.
The woman seemed to notice his gaze and looked over the next second.
"You and I met in times of hardship, and we've supported each other to get to where we are today. I already know your identity, but aren't you curious about me?"
Wu Xiaoliu shook his head like a rattle when he heard this: "Not curious, not curious..."
Xiao Nanhui leaned closer to the fat face, almost making two holes in it: "Seriously?"
