Chapter 64 Frost

Xiao Nanhui suffered from insomnia.

She rarely suffers from insomnia, and never had it when she was in the army. Basically, she fell asleep the moment her head touched the pillow every night.

But ever since she heard what Su Pingchuan said, she couldn't sleep at all.

As soon as she closed her eyes, bad scenes kept turning over in her mind, as if A Kuang would bring Xiao Zhun in early tomorrow morning and show off in front of her.

There is a spy in the army. Judging from the level of knowledge this person has, he is probably in a high position. He is probably in the Subei camp now. How can she sleep peacefully?

Thinking of this, she climbed out of bed, threw a blanket over herself, and stood in the yard until dawn.

Wu Xiaoliu got up early and was about to fetch water when he saw the woman standing there like a sculpture, with frost on her hair.

Something must have happened to the prisoner last night.

"What happened?" Wu Xiaoliu asked knowingly.

Xiao Nan looked back at him but was too lazy to answer.

She really had no answer. Wu Xiaoliu didn't even know her true identity. The only person here who knew something about her, who would definitely stand on her side, and who was healthy and well, was Hao Bai.

Just as he was thinking about it, Hao Bai came out from the other side of the room with messy hair. There was a layer of frost on the dry grass, and he almost slipped when he lost his footing.

Xiao Nanhui raised his head and sighed deeply.

A fat man, a quack doctor, and a paralyzed soldier in prison. She wanted to have some hope, but she couldn't really count on any of them.

"Master Pan, you've woken up long ago. If you'd known it was this young, you would have come in to report it."

A voice sounded at the gate of the courtyard. She knew it was someone from her village, so she was not too anxious.

"What's wrong?"

"Mr. Aquan and his brothers left earlier."

"What? Gone?" This was unexpected. Then she thought of something and her heart tightened. "Did that Tiancheng soldier also take him away?"

"No, not really. He left from the west. When he passed the sentry post, he told his brothers that he had some urgent business. Perhaps it was about the war in the north again."

She breathed a sigh of relief, but a feeling of unease spread.

No, this departure was too sudden, and it was impossible for him to leave Su Pingchuan with her.

Did she reveal her true identity and arouse suspicion? Or was it Su Pingchuan's identity...

Countless possibilities flashed through my mind, each of which made me shudder with fear and brought no comfort at all.

Xiao Nanhui threw the blanket to Wu Xiaoliu, quickly took out the pingxian, and said to him in a low voice: "I'm going out for a while. The deadline is sunset. If I'm not back, do as I told you before. Do you understand?"

Wu Xiaoliu was a little shocked, as if he had not expected this day to come so soon: "What happened?"

"It's not clear yet." Xiao Nanhui placed Pingxian on his back and checked the dagger in his boot. "But it's probably not a good thing. Do you understand what I told you?"

Wu Xiaoliu nodded and subconsciously turned back to look at Hao Bai.

Hao Bai's face looked a little unhappy, but he was unusually quiet and didn't make any noise. He just turned around and went back to the house, not knowing what he was busy with.

When Wu Xiaoliu looked back, Xiao Nanhui had disappeared.

******************

A Kuang knocked the ashes in his hand, lit another stove to warm his hands, changed his posture and huddled under his cloak, cursing in his heart.

The coldest time in Bijiang is not deep winter but right now. Forests like this one, covered with frost, are the most cold-heating and can absorb the last bit of warmth from a person's body.

He waited here for more than an hour, watching the sun sink from the zenith to the west, but the person he was waiting for still hadn't arrived.

If he wasn't afraid of the master behind that man, why would he suffer here? Over the years, he had done hundreds of things for the Bai family, if not tens of thousands. Even the assassination of King Kang was a task he had orchestrated.

The corners of his mouth curled up slightly, and suddenly he thought of the appearance of King Kang when he died. His neck felt cold and he shivered unexpectedly.

Forget it, just wait.

"Sir, someone seems to be coming."

His men were very clever. They had noticed his impatience and were looking around eagerly. When they saw a figure, they came back to report to him.

A Kuang kicked the pile of fruit peels and grass ashes under his feet into the bushes on the side, and looked in the direction of the person coming with full concentration.

A round fruit core rolled down the hillside, turning left and right, and stopped only when it hit a clump of red willows.

Xiao Nanhui looked down at the fruit core and pursed his dry lips.

The terrain here was flat and it was not easy to hide. She followed the traces of those people and came to the nearby area. She looked left and right and only found two stones that could barely be used. She used a flat string to prop herself up between the two rocks. She carefully moved her legs and feet every hour. She had not had a drop of water for most of the day and her hands and feet were frozen stiff. She was much worse off than A Kuang who had fruits and hand warmers.

Finally, the wait was not in vain. She adjusted her body, found a convenient angle for peeping, and stared motionlessly at the position of A Kuang and his gang.

Only half a cup of tea had passed, but she felt like she had been waiting for a long time.

Finally, a group of gray figures emerged from the chaotic bushes. Except for the slight friction sound of sand and gravel, they were as quiet as a cloud floating into the forest.

She rolled her eyes slightly and her gaze fell on the man who had hit her first.

It was a thin figure, not dressed like a Southern Qiang person. The robe he wore was exquisite and luxurious but seemed too loose. He walked very slowly, as if he was looking at A Kuang and his group.

Ah Kuang's reaction was full of respect, and his lowered back even revealed a hint of excessive humility and obedience.
