Chapter 80: Hidden Mist

It is rumored that there is a red dragon living in the valley southwest of Tiancheng. It is extremely poisonous, but when it is young, its color is dark red and it is not poisonous, so it can even eat hawks and sparrows at will.

Thus, when young, this dragon acquired a skill that allowed it to survive in wind, rain, and fog for seven days without food or water, until it developed markings that allowed it to hide from its predators. Later generations called this hiding from harm "fog hiding."

This is also Lu Songping's secret title for this challenge.

The emperor's carriage quietly hid in the Tiancheng army's baggage carts, like a dragon hidden in the rain and fog.

The interior of this carriage is reinforced with a cast iron frame, and the walls are more than an inch thicker than those of ordinary carriages. However, its appearance is no different from other carriages loaded with military supplies. There are no heavy troops deployed around it. They are all those seemingly ordinary and casual infantry archers, but each of them is the best in the camp. There are some familiar faces among them, including the Black Feather Guards, who can fight ten people at once.

The last bit of the timer incense burned out, and the ashes fell into the plate silently.

The Yin hour has passed, and it is time to take over the Mao hour.

Xiao Nanhui quickly lit another one, as if only by seeing the smoke curling out again could her heart calm down.

After lighting the incense, she bent down again, with her face pressed against the floor of the carriage, near the hub, and listened carefully.

The faint vibrations coming from the earth were getting closer and closer, and I didn't know if it was because of the fog, but it sounded particularly vague.

"When cavalry raid at night, the metropolis will cover the horses' hooves, and the few light cavalry sent ahead will often make no sound."

Su Wei's voice sounded above her head. She was a little impatient and did not respond for a while, but continued to listen.

I don't know if it was a moment or half a moment later, but a dull sound that was obviously louder than the noisy sound was heard, like a stone falling into a deep pool.

Those were the battering stones that Lu Songping had placed on a high place early in the morning.

The terrain here is too open. Even if there are small hills that can provide a slight elevation, it is not high enough to ambush and kill the enemy with hammering stones like in the canyon.

Lu Songping's hammering stone was not used for this purpose, but to confirm the distance between the Bai cavalry and the Tiancheng army.

Cavalrymen were often carrying heavy loads, and the ground they passed by would vibrate. The stones would vibrate and roll down, and Tiancheng's generals could use the sound to determine their position.

Now that we hear the noise, it means that the enemy has advanced to the outskirts of Tiancheng’s defenses.

Xiao Nanhui then stood up and lowered the copper and iron plate on the inside of the carriage window. The interior of the carriage instantly became darker, with only the red light on the timekeeping incense flickering, revealing a sense of fragility.

The man's deep voice broke the suffocating silence.

"What is coming will come sooner or later."

Xiao Nanhui blinked, trying to make out the man's outline in the darkness, but in the end he could see nothing.

Her mouth was dry and she just wanted to say something to make herself feel more confident.

"I have previously witnessed the endless variations of the Black Feather Camp's formations at Sanmu Pass. The Southern Qiang barbarians are good at brute force attacks but not at combat tactics, which is quite helpful in today's situation."

"The Black Feather Formation relies on change. Judging from today's situation, we can't even discern the enemy's position. This formation is a dead end, and will eventually break." The voice paused for a moment before continuing, "Xiao Qing, you may not know that the Black Feather Formation's changes are controlled by the sound of the zither. No one but me can control it."

Xiao Nanhui's breath stagnated, and he subconsciously asked, "Then how should we deal with the enemy's surprise attack? What if they come prepared and use the terrain to trap us here?"

"Lu Songping's layout is more dispersed than concentrated. A siege would require an army of a million. As for how to adapt to the situation, Heiyu should be no different from the other camps. Since flags are invisible, they will advance and retreat according to the sound of drums and horns. However, Bai is also aware of this mechanism. In this sense, Tiancheng has indeed lost the initiative."

With every word the emperor spoke, the stone in Xiao Nanhui's heart became heavier.

She bit her lip, feeling that the other party seemed to be intentionally increasing her inner tension, but she didn't dare to speak out and could only suppress her anxiety.

At this moment, another strange sound came through the thick walls of the carriage.

A whimpering sound came from mid-air, like a crane crying in the clouds, and then turned into a heavy drumbeat, slamming hard to the earth.

This is the sound of thousands of arrows being fired at once.

Lu Songping launched the first round of long-range offensive.

The stagnant air blocked the roar of fighting and the wails of the dead, but she was now imagining the sound of killing in her mind, as if she was holding tightly to a final spell.

"Lu Songping's Black Feather Archers possess over a thousand Cloud-Stepping Arrows. These arrows can not only be used with the Sunset Longbow for long-range attacks, but their power is also incredibly powerful, capable of piercing armor from a hundred steps away. I've witnessed this once before..."

"Have you ever heard of the Rhinoceros Armor?"

Xiao Nanhui paused and shook his head blankly.

"Since ancient times, the Bijiang region has been rich in rare and exotic beasts. Nomadic tribesmen there prefer to use animal hides instead of metal for armor. The Qiang are even more skilled at tanning rhinoceros and wild beasts to create armor as hard as gold and stone, capable of lasting a hundred years. Conventional swords and knives struggle to penetrate it, and even Cloud-Stepping Arrows would be half as powerful."

The more she listened, the more anxious she became: "Captain Lu, do you have any plans to deal with this?"

"As far as I know, there is none."

She was speechless: "Then what should I do?"

"Rhinoceros armor is extremely valuable, and not every soldier of ten thousand men will possess it. If I can kill a hundred, I'll kill a hundred."

After he finished speaking, he waved his hands, as if he was explaining something insignificant yet somewhat amusing.

Xiao Nanhui was a little stunned. She seemed to have the illusion that the emperor was joking with her.

But the current situation really made it impossible for her to immerse herself in anything funny. She was not crazy, she just couldn't laugh.

Su Wei easily caught someone's expression in the darkness. He tilted his head and looked a little vicious.
