Chapter 9: Crossing the River

All this happened in just the blink of an eye. Most of the people on the boat had not yet come to their senses, but Ding Weixiang saw it clearly, with a hint of surprise on his face. Shrike was no longer there. She was light and she flipped over to the roof of the boat. When he squinted his eyes, he saw that there were still large pieces of broken ice coming. He looked towards the bow, but there was still no shore in sight.

"Boatman, how long will it take before we reach the shore?"

The boatman was struggling to hold onto the rope, trying to steady the boat: "...it'll take at least half a quarter of an hour!"

Xiao Nanhui stood at the bow of the boat and turned to shout at Shrike, "Go and hold on to Jixiang and Huaqiu. Don't let them capsize the boat!"

Jixiang was a warhorse, so he remained calm no matter how dangerous the situation. Huaqiu, on the other hand, was a bit flustered, his hooves constantly slipping on the deck. Shrike grabbed the reins and locked the two horses in place, ensuring they wouldn't fall.

The ferry was still struggling to move forward in the turbulent current. She was barely able to maintain her balance on her own, but there were still missed pieces of ice that kept hitting her. Some passengers had already huddled together, closing their eyes and waiting to die.

Shrike glared fiercely at Ding Weixiang, who had nothing to do with the matter. Apart from her and Xiao Nanhui, this man should be the one with the best martial arts skills.

"What's the point of you guarding him? If the ship sinks, won't everyone suffer together?"

Ding Weixiang glanced at Zhongli Jing, but Zhongli Jing's gaze was on the family huddled together not far away. Finally, he nodded slightly.

Ding Weixiang then stood up, quickly passed by the angry Shrike, and jumped onto the stern. On the deck was a mooring made of oiled hemp rope, with fist-sized pieces of gravel inside. That was the anchor stone used for dropping anchor when the ship docked.

He drew his knife and chopped, the hemp rope broke and the broken stones scattered. He opened his five fingers and grabbed three stones with one hand. He turned his wrist and threw them. The stones flew towards the broken ice quickly and accurately, and their speed was not inferior to that of the wormwood in Xiao Nanhui's hand.

Xiao Nanhui turned around when he heard the sound, and only looked at the other person's wrist for a moment before moving away and concentrating on dealing with the broken ice in the river again.

With one more person helping, the crisis was finally brought under control and the boat slowly stabilized. After a while, the ice floe seemed to have drifted away, leaving only a few scattered pieces of ice in the river, and there was no danger.

After this ordeal, the people on the boat no longer had the mood to talk, and they just walked in silence all the way to the other side.

When they disembarked, most people's clothes were soaked by the icy river water, and they shivered in the chilly wind, not knowing whether it was from the cold or the lingering fear of surviving the disaster. However, Zhongli was completely dry. His fur coat was made of some unknown material, yet it remained completely wet.

Xiao Nanhui led Jixiang off the boat, followed by a trembling Hao Bai. The two exchanged a brief greeting, and the other said sincerely, "Thanks to Master Yao's help today, I should have thanked you very much. However, I have something urgent to attend to and cannot delay. If we are destined to meet, let's meet at the Zhuming Festival in a few days."

As he spoke, he sneezed uncontrollably, then took out a tattered oil bag from his clothes and took out a white pill from it. Her eyes stopped at the familiar-looking oil bag, which looked like the oil paper used to pad the buns in the inn last night.

"This is a pill that replenishes Qi and blood. Consider it a thank you gift. Please don't refuse, Brother Yao."

After saying that, without caring about Xiao Nanhui's reaction, he stuffed the pill into her hand, turned around and left in a hurry.

She looked at the small white pill in her palm with a bit of a smile, and after thinking about it, she put it away.

Just as she finished packing, she saw Ding Weixiang walking past her from the corner of her eye. He suddenly asked in a low voice, "Were you the one who threw stones at my window this morning?"

Ding Weixiang knew that the other party had seen the way he threw stones on the boat just now. He neither admitted nor denied it, as if he was too lazy to answer the question.

She pressed on: "Why?"

Ding Weixiang then turned around to look at her and pointed at Zhongli Jing who was standing tall not far away: "The master said that it takes a hundred lifetimes to cross the same boat. Young master should cherish this relationship. There is no need to express gratitude."

After saying that, he left quickly without stopping, leaving Xiao Nanhui alone in a daze.

Bai Shi Xiu came to share the same boat? What kind of bullshit excuse is that!

If you don’t want to say it, then don’t say it. We’ll see!
