Li Yong jumped off a building.
To repay his enormous debts, Li Yong sold 54% of HR's shares to the J country government for $400 million. After deducting the $360 million owed to J country, the remaining $40 million was distributed among various banks. $40 million wasn't a large sum, but it was enough to alleviate the financial crisis in continent A.
But HR became a complete casualty of this economic war. Li Yong went from being at the top of the world's rich list to being heavily in debt. He owes the people of R country so much that even several lifetimes might not be enough to repay him. News of HR shareholders committing suicide was reported across the country, and countless families were torn apart.
"Mr. Li Yong left a will requesting that it be handed over to all the faculty and students of the Department of Financial Mathematics at S City University of Science and Technology. As his personal lawyer, I will read it aloud." The lawyer on the stage was dressed in a black suit. Nearly a thousand people from four grades sat in the auditorium in complete silence.
"To all my fellow students and professors at my alma mater, Li Yong, a graduate of the Class of 2018, has a few words to say. Since entering the Department of Financial Mathematics, I have been determined to at least live a life without regrets. As a man, even if I cannot serve my country in the military, I can still dress in a suit and tie and rule a region. I am very sorry that due to some minor oversights at work, HR was acquired by the government of Country J. I tried my best to salvage the situation, but it was all in vain. This caused many ordinary people to suffer lifelong losses, and I am very sorry. In order to compensate the shareholders for their financial losses, I have chosen to sell 54% of my shares, but the losses caused to the country cannot be made up for. Therefore, I will die to prove my innocence." The lawyer closed his folder and left the stage. His work had come to an end.
Zhou Chenjin sat amidst the crowd, eyes closed, leaning back in her chair. The world was overturned too quickly, enough to keep everything in constant flux. In a sense, Li Yong had already done remarkably well. He chose to bear all the blame to try and salvage his compatriots' impending bankruptcy, performing a divine act with mortal flesh. Perhaps he wouldn't have a good reputation politically, but at least in the business world of R Country, he would be remembered for generations.
A senior professor stepped onto the podium. The professor had gray hair and was said to have been rehired after retirement. He had a deep affection for the university and was the only one left who had worked there when it was first built.
"Hello everyone, a few days ago, a counselor for a first-year Chinese literature student received a special application. The student, Chen Xiaojing, was entrusted by a distant relative to take care of the relative's granddaughter until she reaches adulthood. It is understood that the daughter of Chen's distant relative is a senior HR executive, but she was switched by a member of country J four years ago. This is also the most valuable inference currently analyzed by relevant departments."
Is it really that scary?
The professor continued, "Country J and Country R have been in a cold war for many years. Destroying each other's economies would be the easiest way to wage a world war. The university has decided to shorten the course for first-year students to three years. Students in other years will be allowed to graduate after successfully completing their third year and will be sent to civilian life to serve Country R."
The meeting was brief and rushed, but fortunately, the mobilization effect was excellent. At least those who had been slacking off for the first three days after the meeting started to listen attentively and take notes. For example, Chen Xiaojing asked Zhou Chenjin out for dinner for three days, but no one answered. She even sent him WeChat messages but he didn't reply. She thought he had lost him.
“Ren Yin, your office as a professor of electrical engineering is quite picturesque. Even I, a liberal arts student, find it very comfortable,” Chen Xiaojing said, holding a cup of honey grapefruit tea and sitting on the sofa in Zhang Ren Yin’s office, swinging her legs. Professor Zhang was sitting next to her, typing on a paper and listening to music with earphones in her ears.
"Xiaojing, where's that child?" Zhang Renyin took off her headphones. "Did you leave her in the dorm?" "No, my roommate was going to the convenience store, and she wanted to go with her to buy snacks, so I let her go with her."
He frowned slightly, put down his computer, went to his desk, and opened a small cabinet. It was filled with all sorts of snacks, a wide variety of them, whatever was popular.
Chen Xiaojing was stunned: "You don't usually like to eat this kind of junk food, I didn't expect you to have so much in your cupboard."
“The situation outside is very dangerous right now. After all, that child’s mother has a special status, and we can’t say for sure if the J country will try to take advantage of her again when they’re desperate. If she wants snacks in the future, let her come to me. I don’t want her to be kidnapped by bad guys again.” He stood up and sat back down in front of the computer. “Is this tea good? I’ve been holding it for a while.”
"It's delicious! Did you make it especially to my taste? It's sweet and sour, just right." Chen Xiaojing casually put down the cup. "But speaking of which, Professor Zhang, what happened to the love token you promised me when you walked me back to my dorm a few days ago?"
Zhou Chenjin was right. After Zhang Renyin accepted Chen Xiaojing's invitation to dinner, the two became a couple. They often took walks together at S University of Science and Technology in the evenings, and on weekends they would rent tandem bicycles and ride to the river to see the night view, holding hands under the fireworks.
“It’s not like I’m not going to give it to you.” Zhang Renyin took out a small box from another drawer of her desk, inside which were two watches: “A light-sensitive smartwatch that doesn’t need to be charged and can run as long as there is light. It has all the functions that other smartwatches and fitness trackers have.”
"Where did you get this? It's so high-end." Chen Xiaojing took the one that was clearly a women's style; it was exquisitely crafted and suited her perfectly.
“I helped Ms. Wu from HW Company with something the other day, and she gave me this new product. It hasn’t been released yet, only these two.” He saw Chen Xiaojing wearing it and took it out and put it on his wrist too, without covering the hair tie she gave him. “I’m glad you like it.”
