The beginning of all things

The beginning of all things

"Your friend?" Fu Huanian took the hamburger Zhou Chenjin handed him and called back Chen Xiaojing, who had already run away because she felt her wattage was too high.

The start time for evening self-study was fast approaching, and students were already heading to the classrooms. Xiaojing gave a brief self-introduction and then stepped aside to cover for Zhou Chenjin. "High school was alright, your foundation was pretty good too," Fu Huanian said, quickly munching on his hamburger. "It's just that I reckon politics, history, and geography won't be easy for you."

He knew all too well how badly Zhou Chenjin did in social studies in junior high school. It was because he estimated that her grades were only at the level of an excellent high school that he gave up the opportunity to strive for a top high school and chose a slightly more stable excellent high school.

The girl was two years younger than him and couldn't resist teasing him: "Hmm... Hmph... It's alright, but I do plan to go down the path of physics, chemistry and biology." Although she and Chen Xiaojing often complained to each other, one thought chemistry was as difficult as a ghost and the other thought she was doomed for the history exam, she didn't want the person in front of her to look down on her, so she chose to say it in a slightly more subtle way.

“No boys, but girls do.” She glanced cautiously at Chen Xiaojing. Just a few days ago, she had asked her what the meaning behind the candy she received at the beginning of the semester was. It was a gentle, sunny day, and Chen Xiaojing had nonchalantly retorted, “If you eat that candy, you’re mine.” From that moment on, she felt that this was a friend she could be close to.

After finishing his hamburger, Fu Huanian patted her head and said, "Sese, I'll wait for you for three years, okay?" Zhou Chenjin looked up. Fu Huanian was more than ten centimeters taller than her, and she could kiss his eyelashes if she stood on tiptoe. "Huanian, today is your eighteenth birthday, right?"

Senior year of high school is often filled with endless practice problems, and the monotonous and tedious daily routine makes many people feel that senior year is both boring and fulfilling.

The good thing is that, in that kind of youth, the gods granted the young people courage, and their lives were passionate and vibrant.

"Hmm, so does SeSe intend to give me a gift?"

Zhou Chenjin took out a small, folded cross-stitch piece from her pocket. The pattern was quite intricate, depicting a boy dunking a basketball. This was the moment she realized she was falling for him.

"I spent three months on this cross-stitch." Her hands weren't particularly skillful; delicate tasks like threading a needle were always what she disliked most. "Happy birthday, Fu Huanian!"

On September 15th, under the pinkish-orange sunset, Zhou Chenjin offered Fu Huanian her most sincere blessings for the rest of his life. The cross-stitch was small, but it perfectly covered Fu Huanian's entire heart.

The piercing bell for evening self-study rang throughout the entire campus. Chen Xiaojing and Zhou Chenjin took a detour and rushed towards Class 3's classroom. After the thirty-five-second bell rang, the lights on the playground turned on one by one, illuminating the entire lawn.

At six o'clock, the sun had completely set, and it was already late, as if everything had fallen into silence. Fu Huanian's brother called him to come on the court. He had kept his cross-stitch in a lining of his bag, which he carried with him almost everywhere, and it was spotless.

The battle on the field continued, the roars of the young players pierced the sky above the mountainside, and the cheers of victory after each goal seemed to be their whole world at that moment.

After evening self-study began, the entire building was extremely quiet. A-Qiu called Chen Xiaojing out alone, but hesitated to speak. The girl was perceptive and sensed that there must be some bad news.

He handed Chen Xiaojing an A4 sheet of paper: "The police have sent word that two elderly people from a distant relative of yours have passed away one after another. This is their will, which they left for you separately. I haven't seen it."

Chen Xiaojing opened the A4 paper, which contained only one request: that they hope their only granddaughter could be raised by Chen Xiaojing until she reached adulthood. In return, all their money after their death would be inherited by Chen Xiaojing.

"How could that be? I don't know this relative at all, I've never even spoken to them about how to address their family. Why would they entrust a child to me, bypassing the parents' generation?!"

“I don’t know, but since it’s written in a will, it must have a deeper meaning. You’re not an adult yet, so I’ll talk to your parents.”

"Okay, that's the only way."
