Goodbye, City B

Goodbye, City B

The party ended quickly, and the crowd dispersed. Zhou Chenjin and Chen Xiaojing returned to the hotel. "You're amazing! I couldn't have made up those things for Wu Hengyan," Chen Xiaojing said to Zhou Chenjin as she changed into her own clothes and leaned against the door of the hotel room's dressing room.

"What are you talking about? You scared me to death! Trading such a position for President Wu's daughter to act in a TV series? Where did you get the nerve to think she would agree?" She's not even of legal marriage age yet. Letting such a newcomer be the deputy director of the investment department, I don't know if Wu Hengyan trusts young people too much.

The hotel dressing room was small, and Chen Xiaojing could hear Zhou Chenjin's body hitting the wall inside, even through the door. "Why did it take so long? Did you fall asleep in there?" It had taken her ten minutes to change, and she was tired of standing.

Zhou Chenjin opened the dressing room door: "What's all the noise about? That dress is so hard to take off." She hugged the dress and stuffed it into her suitcase. Chen Xiaojing pulled out the room key: "Go! Go! Let's go eat!" She had been craving the snacks in City B for a long time. "We've come all this way, let's go eat barbecue."

"Alright, alright, whatever you want." Zhou Chenjin casually picked up her phone. "It's past five o'clock, let's hurry up." The two closed the door and took the elevator down the long corridor to the first floor, planning to find something to eat at the nearby food street. City B is economically developed, and crowds of people are running to catch the next bus or subway. The roads are bustling with traffic, and the roar of engines of various luxury sports cars can be heard as they pass by.

The two girls turned into the pedestrian street right next to the hotel. The crowds were bustling, and the busy white-collar workers would unanimously put down their impatience, slow down their pace, and listen to and smell the everyday life of the world.

“It’s quite comfortable here. The pace of life doesn’t feel so fast. Those barbecue stall owners seem pretty lucky.” Zhou Chenjin’s mouth was stuffed full. “It’s delicious, the taste is really good.” She put the few skewers she had left to Chen Xiaojing’s mouth. “Try mine, it’s not spicy.” Chen Xiaojing turned her face away. “No, if you eat something that’s not spicy, it’ll be spicy. Chen Chenjin, you can’t trust your sense of taste the most.”

The two sisters bickered, but finished off their skewers.

"Xiaojing, look over there." Zhou Chenjin reacted as if she had seen a ghost, as if she was about to fly away. "Hey! What's so interesting about that? Unless you see Ren Yin right now, there's nothing to be surprised about." Xiaojing looked back for a few seconds and then said something like, "It's a classic Chinese saying."

"Fu Huanian? What's he doing here? Shouldn't he be in the USTC lab?" Fu Huanian graduated a year before Zhou Chenjin. Right after graduation, he was lured to the lab by an old professor. The two were only a few hundred meters apart, and Zhou Chenjin was like the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, unable to see each other and crying out in despair. Now, not only has he come all the way to the capital, but he's still wearing his lab coat and walking with a swagger.

"Just ask and you'll know." Chen Xiaojing stood there, cupped her hands like a megaphone, and shouted, "Fu Huanian—!" The sound was drawn out, attracting the attention of the surrounding tourists.

Fu Huanian heard someone call his name and turned around to find the direction the voice came from, just in time to see Zhou Chenjin covering Chen Xiaojing's mouth and dragging her away from the crime scene. "SeSe?" He walked towards them, "What are you doing in City B?"

Zhou Chenjin released Chen Xiaojing and explained, "Xiaojing's novel is going to be adapted into a TV series, and she was invited by HW to attend the party." Xiaojing happily added, as if taking credit, "She is now the deputy director of HW's investment department, and President Wu appreciates her very much."

...

When did these two sisters develop this habit of taking credit for each other?

After briefly explaining her recent situation, Zhou Chenjin cut straight to the point: "Huanian? Didn't you say you were doing research in the lab? What are you doing here?" Fu Huanian flicked her head: "Did you think I was secretly doing something bad behind your back? Se Se, do you think a normal person would fly thousands of kilometers just for a date? Airfare is expensive, you know?"

Ah Jin nodded, indicating that she reluctantly accepted the explanation.

"Besides, that research back then wasn't as simple as you think. We're developing a typhoid vaccine for domestic supply and intend to use this technology to win over neighboring countries. J country is currently blocking all information, and even the embassy can't contact Professor Zhang. This batch of vaccines will be an excellent negotiating tool."

Zhou Chenjin nodded, meaning that the country would use this batch of vaccines as leverage in the future, which was good news. At least Professor Zhang, who had gone overseas, wasn't being ignored.

"That's good. I hope he'll be alright." Zhou Chenjin glanced at Chen Xiaojing. "Let's move here. It'll be more convenient for work."

"Yes." They all agreed on this point.

Lights shone brightly, fireworks illuminated the sky above City B, and Zhou Chenjin nestled in Fu Huanian's arms. All families lived in peace and tranquility.
