Chapter Thirty-Eight Encounters (3)

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Denos bit off the bandage wrapped around his wrist, revealing strange patterns on the back of his hand.

He opened his bag, and crystals and talismans, along with scattered yellowed pages, spilled out and floated around him.

Incomprehensible incantations were chanted at high speed. With a slight movement of his wrist, countless barriers appeared before him.

But in an instant, all the barriers were broken through. Denos crossed his arms to protect himself, blocking the oncoming kick head-on.

Because his arms were covered in protective runes, without them, both arms would have been severed by now.

But now, he was just kicked and rolled a few times on the ground before crashing into the wall.

Denos scrambled to his feet as quickly as possible, watching the creature slowly walk around beside him. It didn't seem to be in a hurry to kill him, but rather looking around for something interesting.

It was a hunched-over figure, completely covered in black. The child must be inside.

It appeared to have passed out, but its body was still moving. It tried to stand up, looked at Denos, and let out a strange laugh.

"All the busybodies have come," it rasped, turning its head to look behind it as Ketcht slowly drew his greatsword.

And Alpha, those two guys finally arrived.

"Is this the monster from that night?" Ketchum said softly, rotating the object in his hand at a suitable angle.

“It seems so,” Alpha responded softly, holding the chain lock in its hand as it looked at the guy standing there.

After that, Denos knew nothing more, because it had already used a spatial teleportation spell to leave the scene.

He's done enough; we need to leave the professional to deal with this guy.

......

"Things of the Dark and Void Demon lineage, those things aren't demons at all." Denos leaned against the wall, spitting out large mouthfuls of stagnant blood into the wooden tub.

The kick he received was infused with hidden force, and the swirling power destroyed most of his meridians.

Fortunately, he is still alive and can be saved later.

He has already taken care of himself, so there's no need to worry about him being corrupted.

No one is paying attention to him now, because everyone is helping to tidy up the two girls lying on the bed.

Their injuries were far more severe than Denos's, so they naturally occupied the only two beds available.

Lady and Deedri were treating the injuries. Although Ark also had some medical skills, he had to stand aside to avoid suspicion.

The door was pushed open, and a man wrapped in a cloak walked in.

There were just too many cloaked figures here, and Ark couldn't be bothered to tell who they were.

Fortunately, some of these witchers had previously served as preachers, a rank below priests. While not as powerful as priests, they could at least use holy magic to heal wounds.

Only he can guarantee that these two guys won't die from corruption; if they really die because of it, it will be a real problem.

Denos felt ignored. After all, he had risked his life to cover these guys and get them back, and he shouldn't be left without anyone showing any concern.

Only the guy lying on the table next to him, this guy who had just joined their group, had been sitting there since earlier, doing nothing but watching the two of them.

"Don't worry, they won't die." Denos looked at his expression and guessed the reason for his sadness.

Although he didn't know why he felt sad about these two people who had absolutely no connection to him, Denos didn't dislike them. After all, it was people who were completely indifferent to the death of others who should be disliked; those cold-blooded people didn't deserve to be popular.

"It's hard to say." But Ghost Duke just muttered, "We might all die."

"Are you going to die?" Denos raised an eyebrow; he had heard many rumors about this guy.

This guy is truly immortal, transcending all rules and constraints, possessing an inexplicable ability.

"No, none of us are the main characters."

Ghost Duke just said such nonchalant things, and Denos was stunned, not understanding what had happened.

"Those who can achieve their goals are those who manage to overcome all the hardships and obstacles along the way unscathed. Those seemingly insurmountable difficulties are actually nothing to worry about, because they will always have a good ending in the end. This is the protagonist's halo; those with it can quickly stand out from the crowd here." Ghost Duke said to himself, not caring whether Denos understood or not: "But we are not the protagonists; for us, it is very easy to suffer annihilation."

He slowly stood up, looked at the guy, and sighed: "No one expects her to survive given her established persona. Just wait, she'll be dead soon. Although she survived this time, I guess I can start praying for her when this whole thing is over."

Denos stared blankly as the guy rambled on about things no one could understand before walking out the door, his face showing nothing but the expression of not having understood the lesson.

Just as inexplicable as the rumors suggested, Denos frowned, suddenly sensing something was amiss.

He implied that everything was arranged by someone.

Is there really someone orchestrating one's own destiny? Someone who can completely alter one's fate with a single sentence, without even considering logic. Perhaps logic is merely a shield used to conceal himself; that unapproachable being is currently in a place he can never reach, contemplating what awaits him.

This illusion sent a chill down Denos's spine, as if he were a character in a book. His fate, whether alive or dead, was clearly stated in the outline.

That guy seems to believe it.

Well... to be honest, his ability is really like a joke. Someone said, "You won't die." And he really will never die; his appearance won't change, and he'll wander forever like a ghost.

He must have gone out to watch the fireworks, which were actually the destruction caused by those guys.

That was a battle between two high-ranking priests and a monster with abilities similar to a demon, and the entire city's landscape was changing because of this chase.

Denos just hoped to find out the results the next day. There was half a city's distance between here and there, so he wouldn't be affected.

That way, he could slowly drink something to calm down. He had just done a lot of exercise, and the internal energy in his body hadn't dissipated yet, so he was still feeling unwell.

He turned his head to look at the corner of the wall and shook his head helplessly.

Sure enough, the guy who was supposed to be standing there had disappeared. Ark left again without telling anyone, taking the cat with him.

Ark has always been vague about where the cat came from, and it has disappeared suddenly quite a few times like this.

So it turns out I'm just an employee, and they seem willing to tell me all these things.

Denos sighed. He had been following Ark for over a decade, yet Ark still refused to tell him much.

Even his own father advised against trying to find out anything about this guy. Although he had followed Ark for a very long time, his father didn't have a good opinion of him either. Basically, he suggested that Denos just focus on doing his job and not worry about anything else.

At first, Denos was quite unconvinced, feeling as if he had been looked down upon.

But as time went by, he got used to it. He simply focused on doing his own thing and pretended not to see anything the rest of the time.

He moved a chair and sat down next to Nina, looking at the girl who was still unconscious.

This guy is just an ordinary human like him, but he becomes different because he knows magic.

Spells are magical things, and to become a professional in this field, one must be a genius.

Being a genius is just the threshold; if you're not even a genius, you don't even have the right to try. After all, there are only twenty-four hours in a day, and even if you were working your butt off for all twenty-four hours, you probably wouldn't have much more study time than these guys.

Even these geniuses are working incredibly hard just to pass; words can't even begin to describe their efforts. At least hard work doesn't require them to take antidepressants long-term to prevent a breakdown under immense pressure.

This girl named Nina is said to have graduated early and achieved record-breaking grades.

"Hehe, God has endowed her with great talent." Denos chuckled and shook his head, then looked outside.

This guy must be really putting in a lot of effort; you can tell just by looking at his eyes. If those dark circles stay under his eyes for too long, they're practically impossible to get rid of.

"Thanks," Huck said, sitting down beside him and sipping his beer.

"If you really want to thank me, give me a sip too." Denos held out his hand, took the beer, and then gulped it down.

"Where did you get this?" Denos retorted, letting out a satisfying burp. "Looks like it's still the high-quality stuff that hasn't been diluted with water."

“The tavern owner must be dead. That place wasn’t safe before, and with the city in chaos lately, nobody goes there.” Hack finished his drink and put the glass on the table. “That’s a good deal for someone like me. I found half a keg of undiluted beer there. He probably kept this high-class stuff for himself. But now that he’s dead, I took it.”

“Practical, I admire people like you.” Denos didn’t dislike this guy who took other people’s belongings without permission at all, and even patted him on the shoulder with appreciation.

That's to be expected, since they're all dead, taking these shouldn't be a problem.

Hark nodded and turned to look at Denos.

"Do you know what that is?" Hack suddenly lowered his voice. "That guy doesn't seem to be the demon that everyone talks about."

“Yeah, I’ve never seen a demon like that. His abilities are too limited.” Denos shrugged. “That kind of guy is at most about the same level as a Demon Lord. He’s far from being like the legendary ones.”

"Demon Lord" is also a rank, but it's not a rank established by demon hunters; rather, it's a title used by the Church to refer to demonic beings. Those who are descendants of demons are given this title when their abilities reach a certain level.

Denos hesitated for a moment, pinching his chin.

However, it was clear that the black slime covering his body was stronger after he was seriously injured.

What is that?

I don't know, it looks like a monster capable of possession. Denos has seen possession monsters before, but he's never seen one this powerful.

The thing simply wrapped around the child's body, and it was as if it had transformed him from a wild dog into a gray wolf, fundamentally altering the child's abilities.

The thought that such monsters were still lurking in the city sent chills down Denos’s spine.

It felt like you could clearly know there was an evil spirit blowing cold air behind you, but you were powerless to do anything about it.

Ark definitely knows something. That expressionless face has always been like that; even if he knows something, he won't say it. He handles everything silently in the shadows.

Denos cursed a few times, this was the thing it hated most about that guy. He never said anything important, and sometimes he would just chat casually with Denos after he had solved a series of problems.

In fact, if he hadn't said those few words, Denos would have had no idea what had happened.

So annoying.

Denos stood up, took a cigarette from his pocket, put it in his mouth, took a deep breath, and was about to light it.

But then he remembered that there were wounded people and women in the room, and that what he was doing was really inappropriate.

So he could only sit back down, cigarette dangling from his lips, feeling rather dejected.

“You can smoke outside if you want.” Hack also took one out of his pocket: “I’m also a little tempted to have one. Too much has happened lately, and I’m having a hard time keeping up.”

"Good idea."

The two pushed open the door and went out, just in time to see Ghost Duke, who had left after saying something inexplicable.

He was lying on the table in the hallway, as if he were asleep.

Why would he be sleeping here? Denos glanced at the location and roughly understood.

If someone wants to ambush them at this time, they will inevitably pass through the corridor. If they are conscious, there are too many ways to be fooled if they are noticed.

However, if he is asleep, the attacker will definitely slit his throat first before considering what to do next.

This is something that anyone with a normal brain circuit would do; it's both reasonable and logical.

The problem is that this guy is illogical; this immortal guy will make enough noise to alert the people in the room when the other side thinks they've dealt with him.

That way, the people inside might have time to deal with the attackers.

That's a crazy tactic; it's like using yourself as bait.

But perhaps he also knew that all he could do was act as bait.
