Chapter 41
"Is that guy?" Ark said softly, his body instinctively preparing for battle when no one in the crowd was looking.
Although I don't know what kind of abilities that guy might display, as long as I keep my mind under high pressure and do certain things, I can block and counterattack anything in an instant.
But that guy had already disappeared, vanished right in front of me.
Don't you want to fight here?
Yak frowned, feeling something was off.
Generally speaking, monsters like these shouldn't care about the lives of normal people. Oh, or rather, these guys should care quite a bit. They just want these guys dead. Living humans jumping around in front of them inevitably provoke their displeasure.
But this guy didn't seem to want to fight in a crowded place, which surprised Ark. He didn't even know what this guy's abilities were, and attacking earlier would have been the most sensible choice. Although Ark wouldn't care whether he was in a crowd or in an open area, he would definitely retaliate, regardless of whether his blade was stained with the blood of innocent people.
But its departure gave it time to gather information indirectly. Unless it had a specific purpose, this guy made a bad move.
"I don't know." But the cat on the top of my head said, "I can't feel it."
"By the way, when did you step on my head?" Ark remembered that this guy was inside his hat before, but now he was stepping on his head.
"I want to find a better observation location."
“You should use the word ‘的’ in the middle to connect it; it sounds more like normal language,” Yak casually corrected the grammatical error, glancing around warily.
Fortunately, after turning into a cat, this guy knew the difference between himself and other furry friends, and he would consciously hide his differences from others in crowds.
About half an hour later, Ark and Gray came outside and were leaning against the wall, panting and resting.
Half an hour of hiking shouldn't have made me this tired; it's just that I was mentally on edge the whole time.
There's really no other way. If I don't put myself under high pressure, I don't know how I'll cope with all the dangers that are everywhere.
"Can you transform into a human?" Ark asked the cat stuck to the wall hesitantly.
This cat walks on the wall just like it does on the ground, and even moves with an elegant cat-like gait.
"Humanoids consume even more resources. There are none available here."
"Understood." Ark nodded and slowly leaned against Gray.
Why did you turn here?
“Dedeline, oh, that mercenary is nearby. I don’t want her to know about this,” Ark said softly. “Just hide for a while, we’ll continue later. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely do what I promised.”
"Your enemy?"
"My friend."
"Then why didn't you ask her to come and help?"
"Only enemies would call in someone for this kind of favor. I'd rather do this deadly, unpaid work myself. I don't want to pay such a fee. I only earn a few gold coins a day doing business," Yak said jokingly.
Gray didn't answer again, he just stood on the wall.
"I have nothing to repay you with," Gray hesitated for a moment before saying, "I know that humans ask for payment for their services. But I don't know what you want."
"Hehe, I was just joking. We'll talk about the reward later. I really like the little stones in that space; I can take one with me if I want." Ark slowly closed his eyes, and after confirming that Deedri had left the vicinity, he prepared to start searching again.
This matter cannot be delayed, since the dangers posed by demons are mostly speculation and inference. Of course, it cannot be ruled out that there are very weak demons.
But that thing, fundamentally speaking, is an absolutely dangerous substance. It's something that has already been confirmed as dangerous.
Although he didn't know where the guy was, Ark was still thinking about waiting for him to find him. Now that his location had been exposed, the guy was probably thinking about how to eliminate this swindler.
If that's the case, everything will be much easier, much easier in every way. He just needs to assume that Ark is an easy target and make the first move.
That guy will definitely regret it.
Twelve watched as Ark disappeared from her sight, breathing slightly heavily.
He leaned against a tree, his entire body shrouded in black.
"Hey, you could have easily killed that guy just now," Shadow muttered under his breath, a little annoyed. "Even if you're not feeling well right now, you could have left it to me."
“But there are people everywhere,” Twelve said softly. “At least they are all innocent.”
"Ha, you look so cute when you hesitate like that." The shadow wrapped around you laughed and said, "Well then, I suggest you find a hiding place first. You need some time to familiarize yourself with your current abilities. By the way, I also want to know what kind of abilities my blessing has given you."
Twelve nodded slightly, then vanished instantly. No trace remained of her.
The entire city is now filled with people looking for this monster, and Twelve himself was one of them before; he knows most of them.
Strictly speaking, none of them are easy to mess with. None of these guys make Twelve feel that they can be dealt with easily.
Although he had now received this so-called blessing from this strange fellow, Twelve did not intend to confront him head-on. The last person to do so had already been arrested, and that nameless kid was probably still being beaten.
The Church's swift and decisive approach to this matter was truly frightening, regardless of Twelve's feelings towards the Church. It was an organization he couldn't currently touch; a direct confrontation was absolutely out of the question. If mediation wasn't possible, a direct conflict would only lead to certain death.
But where should I go?
After hesitating for a long time, Twelve returned to her room in the hotel.
There are many witchers here; they should all have received news of their deaths.
By this time, they should have already searched his room and were no longer taking it seriously.
If it's just a temporary place to stay, then this place is perfect right now. After all, I don't need it for long; a place to rest for the time being is enough.
Sure enough, their room now reeked of human activity. It must have been turned upside down, but they found nothing. Twelve knew perfectly well that there were no useful traces. They would return empty-handed.
Since they have already dealt with this room, it means that there is definitely no one here now.
As he was thinking this, he suddenly realized that there seemed to be another person in the room.
Twelve only entered after realizing this, and by the time he reacted, it was too late. It was difficult to get out now.
Then let's kill this guy right here. As long as he shuts his mouth, my identity will be safe.
Even as he was thinking this, Twelve had already swung his weapon. The memories left by his long combat experience in this area were ingrained in his very bones.
It pulled a long sword from under the bed, its spare weapon. It did this as it landed, then with a flick of its wrist, it rolled and sprang up on the ground, before slashing through its own scabbard with the long sword.
However, this was not a slash, because Twelve changed the way she used her strength in mid-air. Using the power of her wrist, she forcibly turned this horizontal slash into a thrust.
This is a technique specifically designed to counter parries, and also a gamble on the opponent not swinging back. The strike is delivered halfway through the parry, with the final half of the blade traveling in a throwing motion. Simultaneously, the body lowers while the arm is raised high to dodge any potential swings, followed by a knee strike – the goal is to cut off any opening in the opponent's movement. The aim is to allow the sword to pierce the opponent's body while transforming the fight into close-quarters melee.
It was an absolutely applause-worthy combo, but the opponent's reaction rendered his excellent moves useless. He didn't even attempt to defend; the knife pierced right through his chest, and his own knee strike landed squarely on his body.
That's the most vulnerable part of the body, the abdomen. If someone had been hit without any warning, they would probably be suffering from severe internal bleeding by now.
Are you still alive?
But Twelve still heard his voice. After a moment of fear, he realized who his target was.
When Ghost Duke appeared in front of him, Twelve instinctively failed to recognize him and thus delivered a fatal blow to this man with whom he had once traveled for a time.
However, is "fatal" an accurate term for someone who can't die? Twelve, who isn't very good at languages, hesitated a bit on this matter.
In any case, the alarm is off.
......
"Ouch, that was a really powerful attack." Ghost Duke coughed up blood while giving a thumbs up: "Anyone else would be dead by now."
Twelve didn't want to listen to this guy's nonsense, so she just sat on the bed and felt her wounds slowly healing.
Even within this team, Ghost Duke is considered an oddball. He's always spouting nonsensical things, and his behavior was quite strange when we first met him.
He seemed to be shouting something: Oh! Bandages, robes, scythe, ah, I'm dead.
Seriously, this is inexplicable.
Twelve sighed slightly, looked at the guy and hesitated for a moment before speaking.
“You still look great,” Twelve said softly.
Ghost Duke looked absolutely ecstatic, as if he had witnessed something that excited him greatly.
But all he had in front of him was a monster that needed to find a place to hide, and it was truly unexpected that he hadn't gone to inform the outside world.
"Strange fellow." The shadow transformed into human form and stood beside the guy trying to pull the knife out of his wound.
The twelve knives were inserted and there wasn't much strength left to pull them out. It had just been revived and was actually very weak. It didn't have much strength to complete the whole process and still stand up proudly.
Therefore, Ghost Lord is trying to pull out the knife that has pierced his lung. He doesn't want to endure the pain of suffocation, so he tries to remove the knife from the wound with as little harm as possible.
But this was a bit troublesome because he had other wounds, which caused him to writhe in pain as he strained, and it took him quite a while to remove the knife from the wounds.
"Please look in the mirror before you say something strange, beautiful lady." Ghost Duke looked at her, then at Twelve, and seemed quite pleased.
"I really don't understand what you're so happy about." Twelve frowned. "I really think you're crazy. All your actions seem completely illogical to me."
"I would say this is a behavior pattern that fits my logic." Despite the pain of massive lung bleeding, Ghost Duke bantered with him without any pressure. It seems that this guy can only banter, except for being able to survive.
"So, answer my question. Why are you so happy?" Twelve looked at his expression and felt a chill run down her spine.
"Of course I'm happy, of course I'm happy." Ghost Duke repeated himself twice, standing up and waving his arms like a playwright, as if he had all the energy in his body that needed to be released.
From the first time I saw this guy, he was full of energy, as if he had no worries at all.
But the shadow beside him looked into his eyes, frowning in confusion.
“Let me interject: I can’t believe you, my so-called friend.” Shadow looked at Twelve and said, “I have to confess that I have the ability to see a person’s past. But this guy’s memories go back a long time. He just suddenly appeared somewhere without any warning.”
"Ha, that's because I'm a time traveler." Ghost Duke casually spouted nonsense: "Although I wasn't hit by a truck, logically speaking, I should have been run over by a truck while saving someone, which would have been the normal script. I came here after I died from overwork one night. I don't know why you can't access my previous memories. It's a real pity, otherwise you would have been able to witness a strange place."
Twelve and Shadow were both completely dumbfounded, their faces saying, "Is this guy an idiot?"
Anyone who hears these nonsensical words would probably have the same reaction, because no matter how you look at it, it's hard to believe that someone who seems like a madman is spouting such nonsense.
However, just as Twelve was about to take a proper rest, he saw Ghost Duke standing neatly in front of him, carefully looking at his face.
What are you going to do?
"I just wanted to see what the protagonist of this world looks like," Ghost Duke said earnestly. "I've been searching for a long time, and now I've finally found you."
