Chapter 139
The little spider sat on the sofa, looking tired, with its head propped up in its hands and its eyes looking somewhat empty and lifeless.
After all, he had indeed exerted himself quite a bit. Resting wasn't limited to sleeping; as long as he was in a still state, he could seemingly recover some of his energy.
It's already late at night, and it will be morning soon.
Deedri is already asleep in bed. This guy was trying his best to stay awake with her, but it's too late and there's nothing unexpected to keep her focused, so she fell asleep as soon as she got back.
I was helping the swordsmith with equipment today, so I'm only just getting back. There's not much time to open another room, so Little Spider will rest here for now.
Although Deedris said that Spider-Man could have anyone next to him, Spider-Man was still a shy guy, so he said he could just lie on the sofa.
This also gives me a chance to reflect on what happened today.
What a fulfilling day! Little Spider hadn't experienced something like this in a long time—not knowing what tomorrow would bring.
One thing is certain: he needs to take on a certain position in a team in order to improve his mercenary registration. However, if it's just a calamity-level monster, there's absolutely no need for him to waste too much energy on it.
The little spider rubbed his head; he felt even thinking was a bit difficult. He raised his hand, looking at the thing he was holding, and fell into thought.
These are the weapons made from its spider legs: two very thin, short scythes. Her weapon was also placed in the corner, also a slender scythe, but made of many different parts and very long. It was considerably taller than her.
The little spider stared at the crow watching him from the window for a long time. Suddenly, the short scythe in his hand disappeared. When he realized what was happening, he found a crow feather in his hand.
At that moment, the little creature realized that just now, the short scythe in its hand had cut off a slightly long feather from its body in the time it couldn't even react with its eyes.
It took flight in a panic, but made no sound, as if afraid of startling the monster sitting there.
The little spider sighed as it played with the feather.
It looked in the mirror in front of it, and then slowly took off its shirt.
Close your eyes and think about the changes happening behind you.
Four spider legs, reduced to mere ends, slowly grew from his back. Then, in an instant, the legs, which had previously been reduced to mere ends, surged forth from the wound and formed again. A faint light shone on his shadow, casting it onto the wall, making his four intertwined legs resemble a grotesque and terrifying monster.
Chris retracted the spider legs and then fastened his clothes.
It only takes a small amount of magic to catalyze its growth, but it will probably take several days to return to its previous state. Its main way of replenishing its magic is by obtaining energy from the outside world, that is, absorbing the unstable chaos and separating out the beneficial magic from it.
But for it, this was far too slow. The reason why monsters of the Calamity level and above use enormous sizes is because it can accelerate the absorption of magic power from chaos. Even if the little spider were to transform into a human, it would still be tiny among monsters. Such a size would make it difficult to even maintain its daily consumption, let alone replenish about half of its magic power consumption.
Alternatively, it could find a place to metamorphose, like the habitat of a spiderling in its early stages, using its web to expand its size tens of thousands of times to form a huge domain and recover. However, since we are in a city, this method is clearly not feasible.
Of course, another way is to directly consume the magic core. For a monster of Krissen's level, this is the fastest way to recover.
Spider-Man glanced at Deedrey resting on the bed, hesitated for a moment, and then sat back down.
I was planning to go outside and kill some monsters to replenish my supplies, but she seems completely unprepared right now. It wouldn't be good for me to just leave like this.
He rubbed his temples. To ensure his combat strength didn't diminish, he needed to maintain at least 30% of his magic power. In other words, unless he found a way to replenish it, he'd have to be careful with his magic power for a while.
Hopefully, tomorrow's disaster will be a big one, otherwise there won't be enough food.
"Aren't you asleep yet?"
Suddenly he heard Deedris's voice. Spider-Man paused, then turned to look at the guy lying on his side, looking at him.
“I have night vision, don’t pretend you don’t,” she added, then propped her head up to look at him.
"Perhaps you should rest." The little spider thought for a moment. Deedri hadn't mentioned running out of magic, so she must be maintaining it through sleep and eating. The horn should also help absorb magic.
The replenishment of magical energy depends entirely on an individual's size, and has nothing to do with cultivation level. Therefore, even if she consumes it, she can quickly replenish it; her magical energy is more like a consumable—the kind that is difficult to replenish once used up.
“You are the one who’s tired after all that time,” Deedri muttered softly. “Speaking of which, what have you become now?”
"I don't know," the little spider said hesitantly. "I also want someone to tell me what I really am."
“Tonight is just a farce for you, isn’t it?” Deedri lay down and whispered, “You don’t really need any weapons. The weapons we can create are nothing compared to what you already possess. I subconsciously think you’re humanoid, that a human needs to hold onto things to become stronger… But you don’t need any. You’re essentially a spider, and your whole body is dangerous.”
Christon didn't answer; he just sat there.
Spiders are inherently monstrous, only they are usually too small to be noticeable. However, encountering a spider the size of a human on the road would be an absolute disaster. They possess a hard exoskeleton, spear-like legs, near-perfect vision, and venomous fangs. And that doesn't even include the webs they can weave.
This is a true monster. Even without the approval of any demon god or the special protection afforded to demons, and with magic power that's difficult to use for spells, it has managed to carve out a place for itself in this world solely through its monstrous nature.
And Krisen is perhaps at the top of this race. After consuming the body of the Chaos Calamity, its magical power is just as terrifying. It doesn't even have a fatal weakness like a magic core. Such a creature certainly doesn't need to waste energy on improving its combat strength.
He knew all about these little spiders, but when Deedri suggested giving him a weapon, he didn't refuse at all.
"I'm sorry," Deedris whispered as Spider-Man's mind raced. "I was terrified. When you stood in front of me, I really felt like you were a monster..."
“Don’t worry about it.” Krissom hesitated for a moment before saying, “I don’t care anymore, really.”
But to be honest, the reason I'm not bothered by it is because of what happened after we met. If I had just glanced at them from afar and left, it might have become a psychological trauma.
I should really thank the guy who arranged my fate in the dark.
Dedeline got out of bed, went to the wall, picked up the long scythe, weighed it in her hand for a few moments, and then casually swung it.
“It’s like waving the air around,” she said softly.
It certainly seemed so, because there was absolutely no sound. And it was extremely light. So light that she wondered if she had even grasped anything.
However, there was absolutely no need to doubt the power of this strike. Her target was one of her spare weapons, a fairly decent broadsword. The scythe sliced through the broadsword without making a sound.
However, with her night vision, Deedris could see the fate of the broadsword. When it struck her, the marks looked like those left by an animal pouncing and biting. She clearly remembered trying to cut a thin line, but the entire blade was destroyed the moment it made contact. Not only were there nicks, but the entire blade was covered in black streaks—the poison it carried. Even weapons would be quickly destroyed by this toxin.
This wasn't a weapon; it was a monster. Dedeline even felt that the dragons she had defeated weren't as ferocious as this thing.
It seems too easy to deal with that dragon now; all I need to do is swing this thing and slash at it, and the battle will be over. I don't need to do anything more.
"Giving me such an ridiculously good weapon like this makes me feel guilty," Deedris said, looking at Spider-Man. "Considering the compensation I gave you for hurting you before, is there anything I can do? I will do my best no matter what. I have taken too many benefits from you since we met, and I don't even know how to repay you."
She scratched her hair, which was now completely disheveled from sleeping, with her waist-length hair swaying and cascading down: "Although I don't think this will make things even."
"I don't know." The little spider shook its head again, then sat down in the chair with a strange expression. "Then just live well. I hope you can stay healthy and live like this forever."
"What kind of request is this?"
“You were with Ark too. That guy is a typical example of someone who has become numb because too many people he cares about have died.” Krissen looked at her and said, “I don’t want things to turn out like that. You are someone I care about, so I want you to live a good life.”
“But you know I am a Fire Goat. If I hadn’t become a calamity, my lifespan would only be three hundred years.” Dedeline scratched her head. “Even if I had become a calamity, I could only extend my lifespan to about eight hundred or a thousand years. You seem to be immortal now, right? If you are an immortal being, you will die someday.”
"So how do you evolve into a calamity?" Chrison was stunned when he asked the question, because as soon as he asked it, he knew that he already knew, very well.
Each monster increases its magical power by plundering the magical cores of other monsters, thereby upgrading its magical vessel. I am an exception because of my magical core, but normal monsters must continuously absorb other monsters to increase their magical core capacity in order to further upgrade themselves.
Deedris is not a little spider; to become a scourge, she must expand her size. Based on her race, this likely means growing a magical exoskeleton all over her body, her horns expanding to about three times their normal size, or undergoing a mutation into an even more terrifying monster.
“I don’t want to become a disaster.” She shrugged. “I’m not sure I can get proof of safety in that situation.”
The little spider nodded, then looked at her and said, "Can you become a demon?"
“A demon? No demon god would even look at me.” Dedeline shook her head. “I’m not that lucky.”
"Then steal the demon's seal, just like Lady did." Spider-Man said, then realized how strange it sounded to himself: "Yeah, that way you can become a demon."
Why did he say that? Spider-Man stopped after he spoke, pondering why he cared so much about Deedris's short lifespan.
Why do I so desperately want her to live? The thought that she might die somewhere one day fills me with a slight fear, as if it's an unbearable reality.
"Hey, hey, hey, this doesn't sound like something a little spider would say." Deedley smiled helplessly. "But thank you, it really is a way to extend one's lifespan. If I ever suddenly become afraid of dying of old age, I'll go look for it."
Spider-Man nodded. He didn't want to continue the topic; if he kept asking, there would be more and more things he didn't understand.
I feel like I've been living in a daze all along. There are more and more things I don't understand, and more and more questions are piling up. I don't even know where to begin to learn. Maybe it's best to just stay ignorant.
However, there's a question I should ask right now.
"Speaking of which, Deedrey, do you know your body measurements?" Spider-Man suddenly asked at this moment, and the person in question was stunned, looking at Spider-Man's blank expression.
This awkward situation lasted for about ten seconds before Little Spider realized that his question was rather sudden and even bordered on sexual harassment. He quickly blushed and explained, "No, don't misunderstand, didn't you ask me to knit you a sweater? I was worried that what I knitted wouldn't fit, so I was asking."
Dedeline looked at his flustered appearance and really wanted to laugh, but at the same time, she also had the urge to tease him.
"Huh? I don't know." She said, then took off her clothes in front of the little spider, revealing only a few bandages used as underwear wrapped around a small area: "Take your measurements and try it."
