Chapter 10 Monsters (3)

Chapter Ten

She watched as the monster leaped out of the carriage and vanished into the moonlight in a very short time.

It was so fast that it was almost imperceptible.

Lady gasped for breath, watching the thing leave, and curled up into a ball, feeling wronged.

Inside the carriage, she saw many white spider webs, indicating that the monster had made this place its lair.

"Hey! Chrison, where are you going?" Ark ran out and shouted at the monster outside, but he was walking very fast and probably didn't hear him.

"Damn it, that child ran away again." Yak scratched his head helplessly, sighed, and looked at Lady who had fallen to the ground.

"What, what is that?" Lady covered her mouth, her voice trembling with tears.

She was truly terrified; it was such a hideous and terrifying monster. The elements of spiders and humans were fused together in a bizarre way, making the world seem incredibly dangerous.

“You should thank him; it was that kid who saved you.” Ark glanced at Lady, who was curled up in a ball. “He insisted that I save you. It looks like he would bite me if I didn’t agree.”

After saying that, he reached out to Lady: "Can you still stand up? We still have plenty of time tonight, I can tell you about that child."

......

Lady drank the water in her glass, recalling the events that had just occurred with lingering fear.

I'll probably dream about that monster tonight, barring any unforeseen circumstances. That monster left a very strong impression on me, and I'll probably need to take a tranquilizer to avoid dreaming about it again.

“It’s a monster, you can tell, right?” Ark said. “Anyway, it’s not human; anything could be this monster.”

Lady nodded. It would be surprising if that thing were a person.

“His name is Chrison, a very good boy,” Denos added from the side. “Ark, don’t tell the story yet. Is that child safe out there alone right now?”

“I don’t know, but I think going to him is more dangerous. There are at least witchers and paladins roaming the city now. If it’s the former, I guess Krisen is probably safe, and if it’s the latter, he can probably escape.” Acton paused and said, “He’ll probably be back by tomorrow morning.”

However, after saying that, it fell into deep thought, because it was indeed a little worrying to leave the child alone outside.

Because it's so kind, it's likely to get into trouble if it encounters someone in need of help. It often does foolish things; this child hasn't yet learned to think rationally.

"Um, why is it here?" Lady hesitated for a moment before asking, "Won't it eat me tonight?"

“Don’t worry, this child won’t eat people.” Yak hesitated for a moment. “Although this assurance sounds unfounded, it’s the only thing you don’t need to be wary of. It’s perfectly safe; it will only come to your aid when you’re in danger, and you don’t need to worry about it harming you.”

Why would you believe that?

“If you’ve ever seen it roaring among a group of monsters, protecting an injured person, like I have, everyone who sees its somewhat comical yet threatening actions will have the same thought as me.” Acton paused and said, “And it’s a monster that lives in a forbidden zone.”

Lady hesitated for a moment, then slowly lowered her head.

The term "no-go zone" is a general term for extremely dangerous places in chaotic regions outside the country, places that almost no one should pass through. Anyone who does should be prepared to die.

Aside from a few determined individuals who insisted on going there to draw maps, very few of those respectable fellows returned, though some did, otherwise those places wouldn't have such comprehensive maps.

"Speaking of which, what is that demon?" Lady suddenly remembered that she still had this question to answer.

It sounds like everyone is in the city at an inopportune time because of that demon; that thing seems very unusual. But Lady doesn't know what's wrong with it.

"What? Why didn't you tell me about this?" Suddenly, Denos, who was standing next to him, turned around as if he had been hit by a bomb, and said with a bewildered look, "What's the point of me making a list? We should be leaving the city now!"

“Don’t panic, we still have time to prepare the cargo.” Ark gestured to it to calm down. “Besides, we haven’t decided where we’re going next. Wandering around in dangerous places without a clear destination or reward is something I shouldn’t be doing.”

"You're so greedy, you might as well give up." Denos frowned, then continued organizing the list.

Lady swallowed hard; the question and answer only made her more uneasy.

"Demons, huh? Honestly, I don't recommend you learn about that. It'll only cause you a lot of trouble." Ark hesitated for a moment before saying, "We probably won't run into them, because we'll be leaving here soon."

Besides salt, they had other things to sell, quite a few, and organizing them was too much trouble. Therefore, he didn't have much time to join the conversation.

In the darkness, the terrifying monster roamed the streets until it shrank into a narrow alley where no one could see it before stopping.

This is Christon, curled up in a ball, feeling a bit cold. It's going to be cold tonight; I should stay somewhere warm.

Its general shape is that of a spider, a very scary monster.

Naturally, it didn't get a security certificate either. Nobody would issue a security certificate to someone who looks suspicious.

Chrisson carefully made his way through the street.

It's trying to find a safe place—with a caveat: a relatively safe place. Because for monsters, nowhere is truly safe.

He had originally intended to spend the night in another carriage, since it would be sheltered from the wind and he wouldn't freeze to death. However, Lady's sudden opening of the door made him realize he had startled the man, so he decided to run to a place where no one could see him.

He was very self-aware; he knew he was a monster. Monsters shouldn't wander around in front of living people; it would make them feel uneasy.

If you make others feel uneasy, it's best to hide yourself.

But seriously, it's really cold.

Several spiderwebs shot out from his long legs, enveloping him. These magically created webs provided some warmth. He needed this measure to avoid freezing to death.

Chrison huddled next to the pile of garbage, preparing to sleep.

He took simple precautions, waking it up whenever anyone approached.

"Hey, what are you?"

Suddenly, it heard someone talking. Chris looked up and saw a disgusting thing sticking its head out of the trash can.

It looked like a large, strangely shaped worm, like a centipede, but ugly and enormous, with huge eyes. Pairs of eyes were staring at Chrison.

"Um, I need to find a place to spend the night." Realizing he'd inadvertently trespassed into other monsters' territory, Chris said somewhat sheepishly, "Can I stay here for the night?"

“I don’t mean to chase you away, I just hope you can hide a bit. There will be guards at night, and there are demon hunters in this city now. If you are discovered, I will be implicated as well.” The monster warned in a hoarse voice, then frowned halfway through its sentence: “What’s that wonderful scent you have?”

Chrisson paused for a moment, then took out a small cloth bag from a spider web stuck to his body.

“Do you want some food? This is all the food I have, but I can give it to you if you want.” Chrisson paused and said, “In exchange for this, I’ll stay here for the night, please.”

"Why do you have this thing?" The monster snatched it away and stuffed it into its mouth, causing the trash can to shake as it rejoiced at having food.

Monsters don't actually need to eat; in extreme hunger, the chaotic magic they absorb will accelerate. Although they will endure the pain of hunger, it will guarantee a minimum level of survival.

However, Chris wouldn't go hungry, as it stayed with Ark. Ark at least wouldn't let it go hungry, and it would even give it pocket money, although it never bought anything.

Are you very hungry?

“I haven’t eaten anything since I arrived here.” The monster looked at Chrison, hesitated for a long time, and then said softly, “Thank you.”

“It’s my duty,” Chris said after a pause. “It looks like you’re still hungry. I’ll go see if there’s anything else you can eat.”

"Are you crazy? Are you going to hunt humans?"

“No, no, no, I can make some simple food by mixing some moss with some small insects and mice.” Chrison scratched his head. “It doesn’t sound very appetizing, but I can guarantee it won’t taste too bad.”

"Being able to eat is a blessing, what else would I care about... But I can't give you anything, I can't even go out. I'm injured, I think I'm going to die soon." The monster said softly, "I was discovered a few days ago. Someone chased me for several streets and finally stabbed me with a sword. They thought I was dead before leaving... I escaped with my skin peeled off, but I'm still injured."

Monsters also suffer greatly when injured, and this effect applies not only to humans but also to monsters. Wounds are difficult to heal, as chaotic elements indiscriminately rush into the wound, damaging it and further aggravating the injury.

Otherwise, Lady wouldn't have needed to seek treatment from a priest for her wounds; for a monster like her that is closer to a human, such wounds would be far more fatal.

Fortunately, for Chrison and the monster in the trash can, although the wounds will slowly widen, at least they won't deteriorate so quickly.

"Are you injured?" Chris asked in surprise. "You need to get treatment right away."

"Healing? Are you kidding me?" The monster gave a bitter laugh, a sound that sounded truly sad and tearful.

Healing the wound would require a priest or other methods to slow its progression. The former is impossible, and the latter is very difficult to achieve.

But it trembled with shock because it saw a black aura emanating from this Krissen and surrounding it.

"You can project magic?" it said, somewhat shocked. "That's something only a level two monster can do."

“Well, I don’t know why you’re using the Witcher ranking system, but I’m a bit special.” Crisen paused and said, “While I can’t do it perfectly, I should be able to help you a little.”

Monsters are broadly categorized into two groups, the second being mostly troublesome and quite complex. Simply put, these are very dangerous monsters. The first category uses a simple ranking system from one to five. A level two monster is one that can release the magic power within its core. Generally, such monsters don't have to live in human territory and endure the unpleasantness of human life; they can thrive in chaotic regions. This is because the ability to release magic power allows them to resist most natural disasters and even treat the wounds of some monster-like creatures.

The more twisted the monster, the more chaotic the magic within its body, like Lady's. Although she claims to be a doll, if that's false, it means the magic within her body is very stable. Therefore, if she's injured, she'll need to seek treatment from a priest, just like a human.

Human cities are home to many humanoid monsters like Lady. As long as you can get identification, you can be considered a normal resident of the city.

However, this spider obviously didn't need to be next to the trash can like he was; this monster was there for some reason. Delving into things that didn't concern him would only make him uncomfortable, so he crawled out of the trash can to show Chrisson his wounds.

Although it was a monster, it still looked quite pitiful. Its entire body was covered in wounds, all of which had become infected by the chaotic elements.

Chrison gave the guy a quick treatment of his wound. It wasn't very serious, but it was still a penetrating wound. And because too much time had passed, it had already worsened considerably.

It simply bandaged the wound with its own spider web, which at least prevented it from worsening. That was all it could do.

Without food, they certainly won't live long. Even after simple treatment, being able to eat something can greatly promote wound healing.

As Ark said, Kleeson is prone to getting into trouble because of his overly kind nature, just like now, as he's running around looking for the things he just mentioned to this guy he's only just met.

Not for any reason, but simply because it enjoys it. This monster finds joy in helping others, and even those who aren't monsters will readily lend a hand. It asks for nothing in return, not even for others to get used to its appearance.
