Chapter Fifty
Because of the monster's antics outside, flames surged into this space, disrupting the originally stable structure of the passage.
The direct result was that the battle had to be stopped. If the space wasn't stabilized or everyone didn't leave quickly, everyone would be dead now.
But a stable space is simply impossible. Gray and Dark stood still, not leaving, just staring blankly at the burning sky.
After Yak finished speaking, everyone else had left, leaving only them there.
This is their home, that's all. If this place is destroyed, they will be homeless.
An even more serious problem is that it is simply impossible to fulfill one's responsibilities.
Even setting aside the destruction of the space itself, if the coffin used for sealing were destroyed, they wouldn't be able to contain that thing. Thinking about it that way, what we did just now was truly pointless. If we had known from the beginning that this space wouldn't be able to withstand the influx of fire elements and would collapse, we should have chosen to stabilize it from the start.
However, it seems possible to repair it now. But neither of them knows how. They lack spatial abilities, so they can only silently watch everything unfold.
When they realized that everything was beyond repair, the two of them immediately lost their will to fight; they had no interest in fighting a battle that was bound to be meaningless.
They watched as burning crows fell from the sky, and cats scurried about on the ground. These little creatures, who relied on the magic of this space for survival, also sensed that the world was about to be destroyed.
But they couldn't get out because the entrance was on fire.
“Looks like we can rest,” An said softly, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth. He was seriously injured, but since he was on the verge of death, there was no need to worry about his injuries.
Gray simply nodded.
They felt no sorrow, for they had lived far too long and were already impatient. But as long as they existed, they had to fulfill their responsibilities. It was what they were meant to do, and they would do it even at the cost of their lives.
But now this place is about to disappear, so the meaning of my life is also about to disappear.
So maybe I can just die now? Once I'm dead, I can finally rest.
“You are independent life forms, you can leave here.” Suddenly, Ark appeared behind them.
"Why leave here?" An asked without turning his head. "The coffin that kept that guy locked up is gone, I..."
As he was speaking, he suddenly sensed a strange aura coming from behind him. He turned around in surprise and looked at the coffin that Akra had placed behind him.
“I moved it out,” Yak said. “This thing can exist independently and doesn’t need this space to sustain it.”
Then, he paused and said, "However, the magic array that was preventing that guy from leaving the city was severely damaged. I couldn't save it, so its restraints have now been broken."
Has it already left?
“Maybe. If it were me, I should leave by now. After all, I’ve been locked up for who knows how long, and I’d probably be happy to finally leave,” Ark said. “But the coffin is still there, and you don’t have a reason to die yet. Let’s get out of there quickly and talk to each other outside. There’s something troublesome outside that we need to deal with.”
"Why?" Gray, who hadn't spoken until now, turned her head and looked at Ark with a puzzled expression: "We never promised you any reward."
"I know."
"Then why are you still willing to help us?" Gray asked softly, almost uttering each word slowly. The girl's speech was already somewhat hesitant due to her lack of fluency, and this time it took her even longer to finish a single sentence.
But she really needed a reason that she could convince herself.
“I’ll explain once we get out,” Acton said after a pause, “after I’ve dealt with the trouble.”
......
Nameless and Twelve looked at the girl sitting next to them, cheering and jumping for joy, wondering what she was so happy about.
The entire city is burning, and to avoid being accidentally burned down, they have escaped outside the city.
It's unusually quiet outside today. The only problem is that the average temperature has dropped below zero, which is hard to bear for them since they aren't wearing many thick clothes.
"I'm finally out," the guy who called himself Shadow said with a smile. "The barrier there has been destroyed, and I'm free."
Her voice was cheerful, and she hesitated for a moment as she looked at the two guys next to her before speaking.
"Where are you planning to go?" she asked, a little embarrassed. "You just helped me, and I'm really sorry to be asking this question now. But I need time to enjoy my freedom and don't want to travel with others."
"As for me, I'll probably move to another city." Nameless scratched his head, hesitated for a moment, and said, "I guess I should be wanted by now. I need to find a safer place to hide. Twelve, where are you going? If you haven't decided yet, we can go together. You seem very capable, and with you there, I guess we won't have to worry about monsters on the road."
Twelve didn't answer, but slowly stood up and dragged his sickle toward the city.
"It seems he has no intention of surviving." Wuming said helplessly, "This guy is a bit stubborn. To be honest, I don't like stubborn people. It would be troublesome if he actually accepted my invitation."
The shadow didn't answer, only watched Twelve leave. He dragged his scythe towards the city, the burning city casting a long, long shadow on the ground with its light and heat.
What a strange fellow, that's all she could think. She finally escaped, but now she has to go back.
She roughly knew the reason; this guy seemed to still intend to cleanse himself, it seemed. It appeared he planned to use some achievements to prove he still had intentions to turn back.
"Don't overthink it." Just when the two men thought that this prisoner, who had finally escaped the death penalty, was about to walk back to the gallows, he turned to them and said, "I just have some things to settle down."
Wuming raised an eyebrow: "Are you crazy?"
"Perhaps."
The fire giant brandished his greatsword, attempting to cleave through the figure before him—Kochit. The giant was slashing back with his own weapon.
That weapon was no bigger than a toothpick to him, yet even such a toothpick prevented it from getting in an inch. This guy was simply too huge and arrogant, unwilling to accept the fact that he could be blocked by an ant, determined to crush the guy before he could get in.
As for Alpha? It's busy right now because it's found Xia.
After that guy used the fire element crystal he brought to create this thing, he watched the show from the city wall. He was clearly surprised when he saw Alpha coming over.
The two had no reason to chat; upon meeting, they were determined to kill each other, causing a large-scale collapse of the city wall.
"This way!" a knight in armor shouted to the fleeing people, beckoning them to seek refuge in the safe zone.
The remaining clergy, along with the city's guards and militia, were all on the inner city wall in the very center of the city.
As long as the safe zone isn't severely damaged, there's always a chance to rebuild. However, if the safe zone is destroyed, the foundation upon which the city was built is gone, and the entire city must be moved. Otherwise, starvation is inevitable.
What's protected inside is, simply put, a wheat field.
Actually, the safe zone here is not small. The reason why this city seems small is because most of its area is the safe zone.
Lori sat on the rock, watching the swaying wheat.
Even now, the safe zone remains completely undisturbed by any external disturbances. Even inside, the sky is a clear blue with white clouds, though that's merely a self-deceptive illusion created using holy magic.
This kind of thing can make people temporarily forget what kind of crisis they are facing outside.
Although there is already congestion at the entrance, the level of this disaster may not be much worse than Blood Sun.
Those are definitely Catastrophe-level monsters. Monsters at this level are no longer categorized into different stages based on their abilities, as before. This is because monsters at this level have absolutely nothing in common, so they can only be referred to as a single entity.
This guy must be incredibly powerful, having turned the city into this state. Even high-ranking priests couldn't suppress him in a short time.
"Karl, please, don't go." Lori grabbed Karl's wrist, her expression pleading.
Carl didn't look well; it was seriously injured. It had six penetrating wounds all over its body, not to mention other injuries.
It can indeed heal wounds, but the complete recovery of a wound is a completely different matter for different people. It is itself a vessel of sacred power, and if the vessel is destroyed, the energy stored within is itself a very difficult thing to deal with.
It should rest now, and ideally, no one should come to see it for a week to allow it to recuperate.
But this guy still has to go fight that guy, and you can imagine that once he goes, he might really not come back.
Carl wasn't stopped by Lori; instead, he led her for quite a distance.
Lori was so anxious she was about to cry. She tried to grab his arm, but when she reached up, she touched something sticky.
That was his blood; he used this arm as a weapon. No matter how strong it was, it was still flesh and blood. This arm had reached its limit in its struggle against a scythe made of some unknown metal.
Lori looked at the blood on her hands and was so shocked that she fell to the ground.
In that moment of distraction, Lori finally couldn't catch up with Carl. He put his hands in his pockets and waved simply to Lori, which was his farewell.
Lori could only sit there and cry, crying so sadly, like an abandoned child.
She was hoping Karl would soften his mind and come back, but it was no use, because Karl had to go.
This is his responsibility and obligation. This guy is quite rigid in his thinking, but when it comes to his duties, he completely becomes a different person.
"I've never seen anyone so eager to die." Lori suddenly felt herself being picked up. She turned her head in surprise and looked at the older sister she had met before.
Dedeline tucked Lori into her arms and jogged over, seemingly intending to catch up with Karl.
She ran quite fast, rushing from the inner city into the outside, ignoring the twelve flames around her.
The guy finally stopped.
“Please don’t meddle.” Karl turned to Deedri and said softly, “Please don’t touch the child.”
"Huh? This guy actually cares about you." Dedeline was furious at Karl's expression. "Your Excellency, I'd love for you to die. I only came because I was so annoyed watching this child cry!"
She was in a bad mood, especially when Karl turned his head and she could clearly see Karl's weak face.
Even if this guy is incredibly strong, there's a limit to his power; he can't extract power from his bones. This stubborn guy will die sooner or later, and he'll die a horrible death.
But this guy doesn't seem to care at all; he seems to think his life is worthless. But he's a priest, someone whose death would cause the entire church considerable distress. It's infuriating that he's so indifferent to his own life.
Those whose lives are worthless are trying to prolong their lives, while those whose lives are valuable seem to be eager to die? It seems that things have been misunderstood, or perhaps it should be said that it is precisely because of these kinds of people that their lives are valuable.
The ruins were burning; the entire city had been reduced to rubble. They were engulfed in flames, the air thick with the smell of burning. Behind Karl, the colossal fire giant noticed them. It finally ceased its pursuit of Ketchum, instead materializing and appearing behind Karl, raising its blazing fire blade high.
The change happened so suddenly that neither Deedri nor Karl could react in time. This guy was just too fast. This guy, who was acting on his emotions, wasn't actually being held back by Ketchum. He was just standing there because he wanted to fight it.
If it had just used its non-existent brain even slightly, the city's safe zone would probably have been destroyed by now.
“Once it dies, Carl, you won’t go, right?”
Suddenly, a child's voice rang out. Before Deedley could react, Lori broke free of her restraints.
Karl was stunned, bewildered by the sudden question. In that brief moment of distraction, the flaming blade had already slashed down. The flames of the Flalos lineage were as viscous as porridge; anything that touched them would be burned to ashes.
Ketch slowly turned his head, staring blankly into the distance. He stood frozen in astonishment, as if he had witnessed something unbelievable...
