Chapter 190
"Oh dear, lovely lady, you don't seem to be in a good mood." The fairy deer Lina, whom Ark had visited before, knelt on the lawn with a plate in her hand and placed it in front of the girl next to her.
That was Deedris. She sat cross-legged on the ground, with the Dragon Fang Greatsword stuck in her left hand and a long-handled scythe in her right.
In front of her was a stone tablet, completely blank.
This is Spider-Man's tombstone, completely blank. It's as if mocking him for dying without ever having done anything in his life.
It's quite pathetic. He finally became the Demon King and reached the pinnacle of being a demon, but he died here because he couldn't accept his fate and directly clashed with the church.
It's truly something to brag about; this guy's luck is off the charts. In just one year, he went from being a calamity to a demon king.
Such smooth sailing seemed to unleash all the accumulated bad luck at the same time.
But can it be considered bad luck?
It's just that this time no miracle happened. Miracles don't happen every time. The person who arranges fate has given him too many miracles, to the point that he feels his fate is unfair.
So this time fate was fair and punished this ungrateful fellow.
It should have been done long ago; it's a miracle he's still alive today.
It was all a mess; Deedri just felt like her head was a complete mess.
She suspected the little spider might die, but there was a sliver of hope. A hope she shouldn't have had.
If I had chosen to keep him here even at the risk of angering him, perhaps he would still be sitting somewhere crying right now.
At least he's still alive, at least he's not lying in the ground.
Tears streamed down Deedri's face and fell to the ground as she looked at Linas sitting beside her, as if seeking comfort.
After hearing about these things, she decided to go out and look for Ark.
But instead of finding her, they saw a helpless Deedris.
This child is so pitiful; now she's all alone. She's been abandoned here; her two companions who stayed with her are dead.
However, one of them wasn't completely dead, but he was still taken away.
The Benevolent One came a few days ago and asked for Little White. That guy still doesn't trust a mercenary; resurrecting his friend is something he'll have to do himself.
As for the little spider, the Arbiter himself delivered its corpse.
He used his abilities to preserve the way Spider-Man looked when he died, apologized to Deedris, and then left.
He admitted it was his mistake, but there was nothing he could do. Spider-Man didn't have a magic core, which meant he couldn't be resurrected like Whitebeard.
And so he died completely, without any hope or glory, just dead. He accomplished nothing, it was utterly meaningless. So utterly boring, like being walked along and suddenly being crushed to death by a stone from the sky.
"Please accept my condolences." Lina hesitated for a moment before patting her on the shoulder.
She should actually be given a hug, but she's a bit of a germaphobe. For her, a hug is already the limit she can accept.
"Thank you," Dedeline replied softly, taking it as a consolation to herself.
Now, she's all alone; everyone can survive without the other. She's all alone now, and reality won't be kinder just because she's just lost someone important. On the contrary, the difficulties she was destined to face will only befall her in their entirety.
"What are you planning to do next?" Linas tapped the food she had brought. "This food is a rare treat for the elves living here. If you don't have an appetite, I'll eat it for you."
“You eat. Perhaps I should endure the hunger. For monsters, starvation is to be expected,” she said softly. “Besides, I really don’t have an appetite.”
"Don't worry about it too much." Linas hesitated for a moment before saying dryly, "No one asked you to take responsibility for this guy's death. Although the reason is unclear, you have to survive first. You are very weak. If you don't mind, you can stay at my house for a while."
Dedeline paused for a moment, looking at the guy sitting next to her.
“Of course, the requirement is that you have to wash yourself every day.” Lina quickly added, “By the way, I have severe mysophobia, I admit it, and I don’t plan to get treatment.”
“Why should I help you? As you said, I’m useless,” Dedeline said hesitantly.
She initially thought Linas was just an elf who came to comfort her, and didn't think too much about it. In the past two days, elves like this had often come over, although in the end they didn't even tell each other their names.
But now this guy is inviting me to stay with him temporarily. This kind of accommodation is meaningless and will only bring trouble upon myself. She has offended the church, which means that she is someone who is very likely to cause trouble.
“Ark helped me once, and although I have a grudge against that guy, I’ve never repaid him for saving my life. It makes me uneasy. You’re Ark’s friend, right? In that case, helping you would be like resolving a knot in my heart.” She smiled and said, “I’m interested to hear your story about this guy, but before that, we should go somewhere else.”
Dedeline looked at her, remained silent for a moment, and then sighed softly.
......
“First, don’t spill tea while drinking it. Second, don’t touch the flowers while looking at them. Third, don’t mess up the tidied room. Fourth, please be mindful of your personal cleanliness and hygiene. Fifth, please keep a distance of three meters from me unless absolutely necessary.” Lina said, pushing open the wooden door. “However, this room is an exception; you just need to tidy it up after use.”
This is a cozy little room, clearly a guest room, as the layout is almost identical to that of a hotel.
There was absolutely no sign of use; it had been there for a long time, yet it was spotless.
I can roughly guess that this place will be frequently cleaned up.
After taking a bath, Deedri didn't say a word, but silently went in and sat on the edge of the bed.
The clothes he was wearing were too dirty, so under her coercion, he took a shower, ate something simple, and changed his clothes.
They also informed her that this person was a non-foodist, so she wouldn't get much food. It wasn't that they wanted her to go hungry, but rather that they hoped she would eat cleanly.
Although it would be a bit unreasonable not to properly express her gratitude for the help she received, Deedri was truly exhausted and at a loss, and in such a sorry state, she needed to calm herself down first.
The two weapons and the clothes the little spider had given her were all placed elsewhere. She didn't want to be on guard here. It wasn't out of trust in her; her mind was just in turmoil, and she didn't want to take any precautions.
"Get some rest. I'll stay in the lobby until you wake up, then we can have a proper chat." After saying that, Lina turned and left, and as the door closed, silence returned.
Dedeline lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
If I weren't in such a terrible mood that not drawing my sword to attack someone was already a sign of good self-control, this might have been quite an adventure.
After all, they had encountered such a strange guy and were invited to this inexplicable place.
Everything was a bit inexplicable. If it were before, I might have had a proper chat with this inexplicable guy.
Right now, all she knows is that she should get some sleep. Her head is throbbing, she's at a loss, and she feels like she's drowning.
There was really no other way. In the end, she had fallen to rock bottom, and if she wasn't pulled out of there, she would be completely ruined. However, her ruin wouldn't help anyone else, so now someone was going to help her.
That's all. It's just that she's able to help others now, so now someone is helping her.
She stared at the ceiling, inexplicably unable to fall asleep.
She needed to sleep, and she was already incredibly sleepy. She had just eaten and taken a shower, so she should have been exhausted, but she just couldn't fall asleep.
She hasn't had a break for several days.
Not everyone can stay energetic and vibrant even after going several days without sleep.
That's a matter of individual ability, but for an ordinary monster like me, this is already my limit. If I don't sleep soon, there's a high probability I'll die suddenly.
It's heartbreaking to think that the sudden death was caused by lack of rest. The little spider's death was already meaningless, and if their own death was just as absurd, wouldn't both of them be too tragic?
Now, Ark is nowhere to be found, and his friends have completely vanished. His original teammates were mostly dead long ago. When he finally met Ark, he was already all alone.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have gotten drunk in a strange city. She had already felt desperate then, but now she was experiencing that feeling again.
It's so painful and agonizing. I feel utterly meaningless. Even the little spiders, so much stronger than me, are of no use. Even the spirits of the Spirit Forest can't pose any threat to the church.
Wouldn't she be even more useless?
What should we do next?
This problem was driving her crazy; it was something she had to think about, but she couldn't figure it out.
She always needs to find a reason to keep living, otherwise she feels like a walking corpse.
She should sleep now, at least for now. In order to survive for the time being, not for any grand principles, but just for herself, she needs to rest well.
She closed her eyes, but it felt as if someone was still standing in front of her.
It was a sea of white flowers, and below the flowers was a small hill of corpses.
Standing atop a small hill of corpses, surrounded by an endless sea of white flowers, with the little spider at the very edge of his vision.
So far away, yet so near, and so far away. It seems like you could reach out and touch it, but there's an entire world between you.
He seemed to be saying something, but I couldn't hear it. The difference between them was life and death, so distant that the sound couldn't reach me.
Dedeline closed her eyes slightly and took a deep breath to calm herself down.
Once she truly accepted the fact that Spider-Man was dead, an indescribable anger overwhelmed her.
Why is that guy called the Arbiter able to so calmly harm innocent people? Does his ability only activate because of a sense of justice? So, in his eyes, everything he does is right and just?
It's so infuriating, like someone who was wrongfully convicted.
Suddenly the sea of flowers dispersed, and she was stunned to find herself standing in a strange environment.
“You look like you’re sleeping very restlessly.” Lina’s voice came from behind her.
Dedeline turned her head and looked at the guy who was there.
The person in the dream is very different from the one in reality, because in reality she is bound with bandages all over her body, but now she has removed the bandages and is sitting there wearing strange and gorgeous clothes.
So beautiful, like a fairy. Even if you could see her, it felt like you were in another world.
"Don't be surprised, it's one of my abilities. Can't Ark do it too? Dreams are a summary of a person's subconscious. Here, we can induce others to have suitable dreams, and at the same time induce them to do what they want to do." She said with a smile, "Isn't that a shameless ability? As long as your consciousness isn't strong enough, I only need a few simple words to make you unintentionally become my tool."
"You don't need a useless tool."
“You are not useless. At least you are a fully-fledged combat force. Although you cannot shoulder heavy responsibilities, you are indeed a good choice.”
"So what do you want to do here? You helped me, and I don't mind returning the favor once, anything is fine. I have no limitations now. As long as it's something I can do, I don't mind going against my conscience," Dedely said softly.
Although it sounded a bit pessimistic, she really needed something to do.
So at least give her a task, anything will do. In times like these, only doing something can keep her from being sad. At least for now, let her feel that perhaps there is still a place for her in reality.
Although it was just wishful thinking, she still hoped it wasn't just a pipe dream.
"Don't worry about it, I'm just a retired thug now." Linas gestured for him to continue. "I can only guide you; the control of the dream is in your hands. I'd like to have a cup of tea; could you please?"
Dedeline was silent for a moment, and indeed a table with a teacup on it appeared in front of her.
It is indeed under my control; these things appeared after I just thought about them for a moment.
“Then why can you change the scene?” Deedri asked softly.
“Didn’t Ark teach you how to control dreams? It’s a way of using mental power, and it’s obvious you haven’t trained in this area at all,” Linas said with a smile. “Interested in learning something from me? Although I’m not very strong myself, I can at least make you a little more useful than you are now.”
"Does becoming stronger even matter? That guy lying in his grave has become a demon king, but it's still meaningless."
"At least it gives you more options; that's all I can do to help."
