Chapter 132
"Please don't fight." Lori stood up helplessly, trying to stop the two guys.
She really didn't want things to turn out this way, but these two people simply wouldn't listen to any advice.
“This time, no one will protect you,” Karl said softly. “Ark isn’t here. Don’t force me to kill you.”
"Ha, ha, you should have killed me anyway. You're a priest, how could you tolerate such filth as me?" Lady seemed to be laughing: "Why are you being so lenient?"
He paused for a moment, then suddenly let go of her hand and pulled Lori back a step.
An arrow was stuck in the wood, a limp arrow. It seemed to have no power whatsoever.
"What are you doing?" Little White climbed in through the window, staring in astonishment at the two people standing there, their heads tilted, gripping short swords tightly in their hands.
Behind her, a phantom resembling her drew its bow and aimed at Karl.
“A man who treats a girl so roughly will be punished,” she said coldly, pointing her dagger at Karl. “That’s really going too far.”
Carl didn't explain; he simply pulled Lori up and shielded her behind him.
"You actually helped me?" Lady rubbed her neck, somewhat surprised.
“We ate breakfast together.” Xiaobai didn’t think much of what he meant by that. After tidying her hair, she looked at Karl and said, “At least this guy, the way he looked so nonchalant downstairs just now was infuriating. He really makes me think he’s an idiot.”
“No, Carl is a very good person,” Lori shouted at Xiaobai. “Don’t you dare say bad things about him!”
Lori suddenly felt very angry. Normally, she was the kind of person who would accept things no matter what. But now, seeing Karl being treated like a villain and met with hostility, she felt a surge of anger welling up inside her.
Carl was indeed willing to treat me well. Although he seemed fierce just now, he was always concerned about my safety.
On the contrary, I seem to be too cowardly.
"Really?" Xiaobai was taken aback. She didn't know these people at all. She only had a slight prejudice against this guy because Lady had invited her to breakfast that morning.
"Heh." Lady just looked at him with a cold laugh, exuding an aura of mockery: "Since when have priests been reduced to being protected by demons?"
"Please don't test my limits." Carl took a deep breath to calm himself down, then patted Lori on the shoulder, gesturing for her to go to the back: "Go eat, I'll be down in a bit."
Lori looked at Carl, and the two exchanged a glance. She felt her earlier bravado suddenly soften. She lowered her head, softly agreed, and stepped aside.
"So he's a priest." Only then did Xiaobai sense the holy magic power emanating from him. The magical energy in this room was so high that the holy magic power couldn't be manifested here.
Karl didn't speak, but took two steps forward, and the wooden splinters stuck in his body began to visibly squeeze out of his flesh.
“Um, I can help.” Lori suddenly tugged at his wrist. “I can…”
“Stay put and don’t cause me any more trouble.” Karl glanced at her and said, “As long as you don’t use your abilities, we won’t have any problems.”
As he said this, he pushed the door open for her, and Lori was pushed out before she could even react.
That left only three people in the room.
“This is a hotel, it’s not appropriate to tear this place down.” Lady whistled, watching him try to calm himself down with deep breaths.
“Then stop trying to provoke me,” Carl said softly. “Lady, you weren’t like this before.”
“Although I don’t know what you’re talking about, Lady is right. This is a hotel, and since you’re a member of the church, you shouldn’t be causing trouble for ordinary people.” Xiaobai frowned. “Since you’re a member of the church, please show more reverence for God.”
“As a demon, you shouldn’t offer opinions to a priest.” Karl glanced at them. “One is a demon, and the other is a monster. What’s going on? Why are there so many inhuman creatures in human settlements?”
He didn't want to say anything more, so he turned around and slammed the door shut as he left.
"Are you alright?" As soon as he came out, he saw Lori looking at him with a worried expression, and he sighed.
"Don't worry, there was no fight." Carlton paused and said, "I'll take you somewhere else to stay for the next couple of days; there's a lot of trouble here."
"oh."
"Don't use your abilities again next time. I don't know why you would do something so careless, but I'm really angry." Karl half-squatted down, took out a bandage from his pocket, grabbed her arm, and then pressed the cross against the wound on it.
Those were scratches from flying splinters; the wounds had already begun to rot and turn black.
A soft light enveloped it, and the visible filth was separated from it. Lori closed her eyes in pain.
Once this stuff starts to rot, you won't feel any pain. If you didn't see it with your own eyes, it would be hard to believe that the wound could become this serious.
"I'm sorry," Lori said softly, "I just wanted to help."
She closed her eyes, ready to hear Karl's scolding, but instead, he patted her head.
“Child, you are kind,” Karl said softly. “But don’t be mistaken, God is not kind. He is just, righteous, loving, and just. But he is not benevolent.”
"I don't understand."
“You just need to remember that your greatest fortune is simply surviving. We can’t worry about anyone else.” Karl held her in his arms and whispered, “I’m ashamed to say that I’m not strong enough to provide you with a completely safe barrier. I can protect a group of children from monsters, but I can’t protect you from the harm of other priests.”
"Thank you." Lori listened, tears silently streaming down her face. "You've tried so hard to protect me, it's just that I was disobedient."
“You’re very obedient, but there’s no need to be.” Karl said softly, standing up. “After dinner, would you be interested in learning what this so-called sorcery is?”
Lori paused for a moment, then immediately understood what she meant.
"Yes!" she shouted. "I will study hard!"
Carl shrugged, showing no emotion at her overreaction.
She also needed some means of self-protection, legal means. Carl thought, at least that way she could survive after he fell.
Lady and Little White, who were on the stairs, watched this scene unfold, standing there without any expression.
Perhaps they didn't know what expression to use, and felt a sense of shared misery, since they were all similar pitiful creatures, demons who would be punished if they didn't bow down to the church.
"Why did you get into a conflict with that guy?" Xiaobai took her longbow from the shadow's hand, and the shadow merged into her body: "I really can't sense much evil from him. It's strange, he's clearly done something wrong, but his soul is still clean."
"Oh? You speak so professionally? You can see souls?" Lady scoffed softly, "Speaking of which, you're just a monster, why are you running around for the church?"
"No one has ever said that monsters can't do good deeds."
"What exactly constitutes a good thing?"
"Protect those who should be protected, do what should be done, be proud of what you do, and feel honored by what you have done."
“That kind of slogan-like response is really annoying.” Lady frowned. “That’s why I’m annoyed by the people in the church. They’re all idealists who can’t tolerate any flaws.”
"Isn't that better?"
“If that sand were you, you wouldn’t feel so good.” Lady rubbed her temples. “I don’t want to become like this either.”
Her thought process has been completely altered; the Lady he referred to as "the one" has been formatted and replaced with a new one. Although she shares the same memories, she is aware of how much of a crybaby and cowardly she used to be, and the thought alone makes her feel disgusted.
If crying won't make anyone pity you, why bother crying at all? It only bothers others and serves no purpose.
"Is that so?" Xiaobai paused and said, "Perhaps when that time comes, I will go to the Land of the Dead. After all, that is the place where monsters should stay."
"Are you so sure they'll take you in?"
“Well, because Benny knows people in there. If I have a letter of introduction, I can at least survive.” Xiaobai looked at her and said, “Aak knows them too. If you want to go, just ask him to give you a letter of introduction.”
......
"Hi, are you here to buy clothes?" Yak propped his head up and looked at the guy standing in front of him. "Sorry, I'm a married man. Please dress neatly while you stand here, otherwise I won't be able to do business with you."
"I'm in a bad mood right now, don't joke with me."
"Sorry, what's wrong? Did you get a setback?" Ark noticed that her expression was indeed not good: "You're not in a very good state right now."
The swordsmith didn't want to say anything more to this guy, and looked at Benny, who was sleeping with her head on Ark's shoulder.
“She looks really exhausted,” Yake said softly, noticing her gaze. “She probably didn’t have a chance to rest while at church.”
"Perhaps, it's much safer there than here." The swordsmith paused and said, "This is her weakness, and although it's heartbreaking, I have to say it. If she dies someday, it will most likely be because of this."
"I will try my best to postpone that day by one day."
"Can't you say something like 'I'll protect her forever'?"
“We can all live forever, and one of us will die for various reasons someday.” Yak said with a smile, “I just hope I can die before her. That way, I won’t have to blame myself.”
“There’s one possibility right now: you know you have a demon in your team, right?” The swordsmith seemed a little angry. “Traveling all over the world with a demon, if that guy grows up, you might not be able to handle him.”
“Actually, the two of us have actually dealt with a Demon God before,” Ark said nonchalantly. “So I’m not afraid of another Demon God emerging. Besides, the combat power of a Demon God is only equivalent to that of a Saint. Now that we have five Saints, even if a Demon God grows to the point of being uncontrollable, it’s impossible for them to shake the Church. You can sit firmly on your thrones; no one will take them from you.”
“But any possibility of this must be nipped in the bud.” The swordsmith sighed. “Forget it, it’s pointless to talk to you about this.”
“You understand.” Yak looked at her, hesitated for a moment, and said, “But I wasn’t entirely joking before. Someone must have said you have a great figure. If Benny really wakes up while you’re just standing here in a robe, I won’t be able to deny it.” As he spoke, he rummaged in the drawer next to him for a while and handed her a piece of clothing: “Think about it? Only five real silver coins.”
"That's really stingy." The swordsmith frowned, but still took the item. "This thing is worth five silver coins? The quality is really poor."
"At least it'll keep you warm." Yak casually took a gold coin from the table, then took some change from his bag and handed it back. "Thank you for your patronage."
"Keep the change for yourself. We never really have a chance to use money where we're from. It's going to get old and rotten with me." The knifemaker tried to push it back, but in an instant, before he could even react, he was already holding the change in his hand.
“Don’t pity me. Being a businessman is a high-paying profession. Although I can’t compare to you, being greedy for such small gains can easily lead to trouble.” As he spoke, Yak took notes in his notebook.
"What did you just do?" the swordsmith asked, looking at Ark. "I don't remember your abilities being related to time."
"It's just a way of using an ability. I can destroy anything that touches my body. If I target time, I can still snatch it from God's hands in a split second." Ark smiled and said, "Your expression is a bit strange."
“You demons are going a bit too far,” the swordsmith said, looking at him. “Your caravan has already attracted enough attention; sooner or later, the Church will deem it dangerous.”
“Swordsmith, to be honest, even if we do nothing, one day they will still consider us dangerous.” Ark looked at her. “After all, they already know that we have a Demon God. They will react quickly; probably in less than a month, someone will come.”
The swordsmith didn't speak, but glanced at his own dagger beside him.
She glanced at the advertisement, paused for a moment, and then smiled helplessly.
"It actually remembers my name." She shook her head. "What a monster. I had forgotten it myself."
“Although I’m not good at making people remember me, I’m still good at remembering people.” Acton paused and said, “This is a great city, and I really don’t want to leave so hastily.”
