Chapter 200: Peace (1)

Chapter 200

A blue flame slid out of the man's fingertips in an arc, then formed a blazing line of fire.

He took another magic core out of his pocket, tossed it in his hand, and then flicked it with his finger.

Then the thing shot out like an arrow, piercing through the dragon's scales, twisting and deforming, and wild thorns grew into a dense forest on its body.

The forest was ablaze, and the entire dragon was burning.

He then chanted a spell, and suddenly a huge vortex appeared on the earth, trapping half of the dragon's body inside.

It was bound together by chains, one after another, from who-knows-where. Golden chains.

"That should probably be enough to suppress it," he muttered to himself, scratching his head uncertainly.

It watched for five minutes until it saw a huge golden cross fall from the sky and pierce through it, only then did it feel at ease.

As expected of a priest, I really can't attack myself with this kind of ability.

Since you can't do it, don't make things difficult for yourself. Being able to complete those feats is already quite good for a human being.

Then he sighed and looked at the enormous thing.

"He's quite a big guy," he muttered to himself, scratching his head.

He closed the book, tied it with a leather belt, hung it on his waist, and stretched.

The air is so fresh, and the world is so beautiful.

The air was thick with the smell of burning and blood.

It was nauseating, yet strangely familiar. After all, I smelled this odor every day. Even if I disliked it, I'd gotten used to it.

He scratched his head and frowned as he looked at his hands.

It has some burn marks on it, probably from accidentally coming into contact with a fire-type magic core.

It seems a bit serious; it should be bandaged. Otherwise, it might develop into a black sore.

I'm just an ordinary human being. If I'm not careful, I probably won't even live to be fifty.

He jumped off the roof, his back to the roaring dragon.

The houses right next to him were destroyed by the energy beam, but he didn't even bother to turn his head. He was just a little annoyed by the noise from the raging beast.

It's the same thing every day. At first, I found these fancy things somewhat appealing. But now, I've seen far too many of these things, and they no longer affect me emotionally.

He moved his neck, then pinched his nose with a hint of disgust.

No matter how many times it happens, I can't stand the smell of people being roasted.

Not far away, on the ground, all that could be seen of the flesh of the roasted humans was skin and flesh stuck to their bones.

Who is it? He doesn't know. If this building had appeared in front of him earlier, he might have felt a little regretful, but right now he just feels disgusted.

There's nothing that smells worse than this.

"Denos, thank you for your help." He heard someone calling him, turned around, and saw the guy.

"Yeah, you've worked hard too," he replied casually, sighing.

That's Karl.

These two guys have completely settled down in this city, in this place that was destroyed once, a place where disasters of all sizes happen every day.

Karl returned here after leaving Ark's group, initially intending to find a way back, but now he changed his mind. This place needed a saint more than he had thought; the clergy already here were clearly incapable of handling the current problems. The city was too large, making the restoration of the abnormality difficult.

As for why Karl came here, Denos asked him once, and he answered truthfully.

Protecting a demon god was far too difficult for him, almost impossible. He had meddled in things he shouldn't have.

Hearing such words from the mouth of a high-ranking priest, Denos almost wanted to laugh out loud.

He wanted to laugh heartily because he knew something even high-ranking clergy couldn't do.

How much power is enough? I don't know. It seems that even a saint as powerful as him has things he can't control. So if even power has its limitations, why should I grieve over my own weakness?

Surprisingly, Denor was very open-minded. He no longer suffered, but lived a peaceful and joyful life, doing what he could.

In this way, it is as if God has bestowed happiness upon us.

That monster seems to return almost every now and then, and it's still writhing and groaning on the ground.

No matter how many times you hear that sound, you'll feel a deep-seated fear. It's the wail of a demon from hell; you should truly be afraid and terrified.

They're truly tireless, but finding and destroying the magic core from a dragon won't be easy. The magic core is incredibly well-sealed; only a paladin could probably break it open.

Anyway, it's none of my business. My task in dealing with this thing is simply to control it and then inflict some damage. I can't penetrate its defenses; all my attacks were just meant to provoke it, and then I'd have accomplished my mission.

Karl placed his hand on his arm, and holy magic instantly enveloped him. The excruciating pain from the wound kept his expression unchanged.

It really does hurt for a long time until you lose all feeling.

When Karl treated his burned skin, he also removed the decay.

"Thank you," Denos said softly, waving his hand before walking silently down the empty street.

Walking in such a place, he felt a little melancholy.

This was once a bustling street, just a year ago. It was still a street where many people lived.

The people living here are fortunate, relatively speaking. This is because it's a well-developed city with food, essential clothing, and ample military strength.

A place that, in theory, should not have been destroyed.

It's hard to accept that even a place like this has been reduced to ashes; it just feels empty and meaningless.

He took a cigarette out of his pocket, put it in his mouth, then took out a match, struck it, and lit the cigarette.

Sure enough, lighters aren't for me. There's no need for me to keep up with the pace of development; I was just doing it for novelty.

We've gone back to using matches; they're still reliable. There's no need to worry about the problems mentioned above; as long as you can get a match, you can use it to start a fire.

I'm just lighting a cigarette; it doesn't matter what I use.

Thinking this, it slowly took a drag and then slowly exhaled.

It's not that I'm feeling melancholy, it's just that I'm a little tired.

Its work here is irreplaceable; it's incredibly busy.

Settling in a new place did not make things easier for him; on the contrary, he was even more exhausted than he had been in the carriage in Ark.

It turns out there's a place in the world that needs me so much.

He thought to himself, initially with a mix of surprise and trepidation, but later he got used to it. Some things were simply only he could do. If someone else did them, they just wouldn't be able to do them well. That's why he was quite well-known in the city, and he and Nina were both very popular there.

Even here they have a cozy house, and having a large house that wasn't completely destroyed is one of the advance rewards.

Here, he lived a peaceful and joyful life. He rose to prominence through his mastery of sorcery.

He calculated that if he had settled in a similar place earlier, he might have earned more than if he had followed Yak.

To be frank, Ark only saw him as a mercenary. But here, he was regarded as the child of a great sorcerer.

He has inherited his skills and worked hard. He possesses the corresponding abilities and a reliable work style.

These qualities are enough to make him very popular in the city.

He was now planning to go home, even with the monster roaring behind him, and flames and wails everywhere.

He also planned to go home; these things were none of his concern.

This wasn't something he could control, so he wouldn't waste his time on it. He was initially a little bothered, but now, after some time, he'd gotten used to this indifference.

It was something beyond my control anyway, and even if I cared, I couldn't really help. It would only cause me more trouble.

He sighed, then choked on his cigarette and coughed violently.

The smoke here isn't very good. There's no tobacco growing in this safe zone, so he can only smoke what's left over from before.

It's been a long time since any merchants, or rather, tobacco merchants, have come here.

Now, due to the Blood Day, the movement of merchants has become extremely difficult. Merchants without sufficient strength simply have no way to reach the next city alive.

Therefore, even when they come here, they only sell daily necessities.

For example, salt.

The fact that things had to be rationed rather than purchased was a headache for the managers here. Denos didn't care about these things, nor could he. He was content as long as he could live a good life.

With that thought in mind, he returned to his home.

“Welcome back,” Nina’s voice came from inside. “You’re back early today.”

"That thing is easy to deal with," Denos said casually.

The dragon can no longer be seen in this place; only its roar can be heard.

After all, that thing only looks a bit troublesome. In reality, its enormous size means you can easily hit it with any skill you throw. Besides, its eyesight isn't very good, so many of its attacks won't hurt you.

Even though it's so big, it will disappear in a flash.

Nina came out of the room, and Denos looked at her, hesitated for a moment, and then opened his arms to hug her.

The two hugged for a few minutes before separating.

"It's so good to be alive," she said softly.

"It's so good to see you alive," Denos said softly.

Even if he made his job seem easy, the nature of it remained the same. It was a job that demanded his life. Any mistake could cost him his life.

As long as he is alive, that is something to be truly happy about for Nina.

This is so delightful, it's almost enough to make one weep with joy.

The two kissed, and then Nina took his arm.

They've officially become a couple during this time, but the reason it's not official yet is because the church here is very busy. They'll have to wait until the church is renovated before they can get married.

However, the two have only not gone through a formal ceremony; they are essentially already a formal couple.

Denos often thought that he could find pretty and cute girls if he wanted to.

Nina and he got along very well because they were both sorcerers, had both experienced life outside, and both understood that they had limitations as humans.

They all have a small wish and dream.

Such simplicity fostered mutual respect.

"How's the tidying up going today?" Denos asked casually.

Nina's job wasn't easy compared to his, but it wasn't one that required risking one's life either.

Simply put, it's about rebuilding the library.

This place preserves a large number of books related to sorcerers, and it has the most complete collection of books on sorcery.

The disaster threatened these books, but fortunately, they were generally protected by magic.

So the bad news is that these things were buried, but the good news is that most of them are still visible.

She planned to reorganize these books properly. Although humans cannot become very strong, they can still do what humans are capable of.

This is perfect enough for humankind. There is no such thing as absolute perfection.

"It's alright. We've already collected several hundred books. I've sorted them out, and the system is pretty much organized." Nina hesitated for a moment before saying, "We can rebuild the campus."

“Then let’s do it,” Denos said casually, as if it were something that could be done so easily.

Nina hesitated for a moment, then smiled helplessly and nodded.

Indeed, they've experienced even more difficult things. Humans, after all, live for something of value. If you have something you want to do, don't hesitate; if you hesitate, you'll definitely regret it later.

They have nothing to lose, so why not do it?

Denos sat down in the chair, and Nina leaned on his shoulder.

It was afternoon, and Denos had to go on patrol soon. Before leaving for patrol, he wanted to spend some time with his lovely wife.

This makes me feel at ease; the two of us rely on each other, not because of lust, but simply because it brings me peace of mind.

After all, that way I won't be alone.

In this world where everyone is lonely, I am not alone. Is there anything better than that?

I don't know, maybe it exists, but I haven't experienced it myself.

A loud rumbling sound came from outside, and the house shook.

Neither Denos nor Nina cared; this roaring sound happened every day. They had been here for so long that they were used to it.

Listen to the chaotic sounds outside: the roar of a dragon, the earth trembling. Occasional earthquakes and typhoons, occasional snowstorms and sandstorms.

This damn weather, this damn environment, this damn monster.

In such a hellish place, you can still find someone to keep you company.

That's wonderful!

It was so perfect that I wondered if I should express my gratitude to the long-dead god.
