Chapter Twenty-Eight
"A descendant of the demons of space and time?" Ark asked, then stroked his chin and began to ponder.
When Spider-Man returned, he told everyone about what had happened, which made them feel frustrated.
They arrived here long before the time was known, but they had no news of the demons whatsoever.
But this little spider seems to have only been here a few days, and has already found everyone's target.
The little spider nodded, looking at the pensive Ark, and said, "But I'm not sure. It claims to be a demon. I don't know if this guy is really a demon. After all, I've never seen a demon before."
“If you want to live a good life, this kind of experience obviously means you’re very lucky,” Yak said softly. “I knew it.”
"You know?" Dedeline was about to say, "Ak, your tone is really irritating." Nothing is more unpleasant than being a Monday morning quarterback.
But if it was Ark who said that, then she really didn't have much of a problem with it. If this guy really said he knew, then it was probably true; he just didn't want to tell anyone.
"That's just a guess, because there are so many people looking for it right now, but they haven't found it yet. It probably has some very clever hiding techniques."
"So only a descendant of that demon god could hide himself like this?"
"No, it should be said that only this descendant of the demon god can truly be completely detached from reality. It lives in the cracks. The cracks of space and time. Some even speculate that this lineage has not actually suffered a fatal blow and is now training its troops in some space, ready to counterattack at any moment."
"I've heard that too, but you know many scholars try to attract attention with such alarmist statements. Do you believe it?"
"I don't believe it."
"Then why are you so confident?" Dedeline rolled her eyes at Ark, then looked at Denos, who was helping to pack things up in the back.
There might be many people spending the night there, so they need to prepare sleeping bags in advance.
"How many years have you been with this guy?" Dedeline looked at Denos. "It seems you're quite used to him."
“It’s been almost twenty years, maybe fifteen or more, I can’t remember exactly how much more,” Denos said helplessly. “I regret telling my father one day that I wanted to travel. I regret even more that I followed it up there without thinking when it came to my house.”
"Back then you were a very handsome young man, full of energy and a lot of baggage. Unlike now, you've become a middle-aged man."
Then, it was just casual chatting that had nothing to do with the important matters.
One moment Ark is talking about the places he has been, and the next moment Miss Deedrie is recounting some of her strange experiences.
These are things that shut-ins rarely see; they've traveled to almost anywhere, and there's plenty to talk about.
Lady listened to their chatter from her bed and felt a strange sense of relief.
It was now installing its own arm; her body was covered by a robe except for her arm, and the abandoned child was fiddling with the remaining machinery on her arm using all sorts of strange things.
The little spider watched curiously from the side, after all, so far, the only thing they knew about Denos's lighter was that was made by the Nedra.
Most other things related to Nidra are just rumors, such as the enormous machinery and incredibly ingenious architectural designs there.
To other cities, that city seemed out of touch with the times.
But there are two people here who are products of the Nedra, or even purely mechanical.
"Speaking of which, were you really a product of Nedra?" Ark turned around and looked at Lady with a bit of curiosity.
Lady nodded; she roughly understood that it seemed Ark had never believed what she had said about the past.
Although I felt a pang of sadness, I could roughly understand why. It was simply that her arrival was so sudden and unexpected that it was hard to believe.
"Ha, it seems you make mistakes too." Denos seized the opportunity to mock him: "I thought everything you said was right."
"That's incredibly much trust in me. I don't deserve your trust at all." Ark shrugged helplessly. "Some people also say that I make mistakes far too often."
As for who he was referring to, no one wanted to delve into it. This guy had met far too many people; it was questionable how many people had actually traveled with him.
"Aren't you going to discuss what to do next?" Yan suddenly asked softly. "You all seem very relaxed."
"Still thinking about that demon?" Ark looked at him helplessly and said, "That kind of demon is impossible to find if he wants to hide well. He might be eavesdropping on our conversation somewhere right now."
You are lying.
Suddenly, the air fell silent, with only Yan's last words echoing in the room.
Yak turned his head away, avoiding the question.
“Indeed, there are still two things I don’t understand,” Ark said softly. “First, if the demon in this city is really related to space and time, how was he discovered? Second, even if he was discovered, why is everyone so convinced that he is a demon? No matter how tense the church is, it wouldn’t be so convinced that there is a demon here based on such a small clue. This would terrify their believers. Even if there were such news, they should only have a high-ranking priest here to keep things under control.”
At this point, he looked at Yan and said, "They have something they believe in unconditionally. It's not a word or a guarantee; they've seen a trace, a trace that can be definitively identified as the work of a demon. Let me guess, you've seen that trace."
"It's gray."
"Ash?"
“White ash.” Yan looked at Yan and said, “Describe that thing again.”
"It's just white ash, nothing else to say." She said with her head down, "The paladin put it on the table, very carefully."
“It could just be furnace ash,” Ark hesitated for a moment before asking, “Any other distinguishing features?”
“There’s no fire element residue in it, it’s not furnace ash,” Flame immediately retorted. “If you’ve ever seen it…if you’ve ever seen it, you’ll know that it’s definitely not normal furnace ash.”
Yak was stunned, because for no apparent reason, he suddenly sensed an aura of fear emanating from her.
What was she afraid of? Was she afraid of those ashes?
“White furnace ash, pure white.” After she calmed down, she said softly again, “There is no fire element on it. If it weren’t for the label next to it indicating the original substance of this thing, I would even think that it is some kind of special substance that they found.”
“Ashes are a product of fire and other substances, but logically speaking, no ashes are ever pure.” Yan said softly from the side, “I have never seen that thing with my own eyes, but my sister told me about it, so even if it’s impossible, I can only trust her.”
"Fraros, the Flame Demon, the last demon, was controlled by the church in a city. Although it's unknown whether the church ultimately executed it or did something to it, its abilities have already demonstrated astonishing power," Ark casually remarked. "If I remember correctly, that guy's ability was to command everything within his domain to start burning. Unless it stops itself, it's an inextinguishable flame. Even if the attached object is burned away, the flame will still continue to burn."
At this point, Ark sighed helplessly: "I fully support the Church for what that guy did. Even when it was forced into that city, it still dragged the entire city down with it. The ruins are still burning. I heard that the safe zone wasn't affected, and there might still be survivors in that safe zone. But no one can go in because the flames are still burning, and no one can come out because the flames are still burning."
"How did you know?" Yan looked at Yak warily. "Where did you find out?"
“I’ve been to that city. It used to be a small, nameless city. But now, because of that incident, it has gotten its own name.”
“The Burning Pakri, Pakri was the commander of a knightly order. It died there, and even a paladin couldn't survive the battle against it. In the end, the matter alarmed the Central Church, and then it was eliminated by someone of higher rank. I don't know exactly which saint it was.” Yan looked at Ark: “You seem to know a lot about this. Do you know anything about it?”
"Who cares?" Yak said helplessly. "Knowing too much about this kind of thing is useless."
"Is this someone you know?" Dedeline asked, looking at Ark. "I remember you knowing..."
"Ahem, this water's a bit hot." Yak quickly waved to Deedri, who frowned slightly in displeasure, but swallowed back the last words she was about to say.
Indeed, although everyone appears to be exchanging information, this is classified information and has nothing to do with what he wants to know. Even if they wanted to talk about it, they should do so in private.
“If the person is here, then let me confirm whether the magic circle marks around the city are related to you?” Denos walked over and asked, “We want to confirm what those things are.”
"The magic circle used to project the Flame Demon was originally intended to rely on this wave of Blood Suns for its energy source. But now that the Blood Suns have passed, all our preparations have naturally fallen through," Yan said softly. "Plus, with the new clergymen now arriving, we have no plans left."
“I guess the others are in the same boat,” Yak comforted. “This Blood Sun came so suddenly that everyone’s plans have been thrown into chaos.”
It feels like a dozen people are playing chess together, each with their own agenda, when suddenly someone bursts in and overturns the chessboard and the cards in their hands.
Although everyone managed to defeat this guy and quickly restore order to the table, everyone now knew the other side's previous plans, and most people's plans had been disrupted.
The situation is utterly chaotic; things are in complete disarray beneath the surface. Only the Church in the open holds the advantage, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, no matter what kind of demon it is, they cannot cause much trouble.
The fact that the city wasn't cleaned up tonight is already a concession; it's giving these people a way out. It's not too late to leave now. Leave the city before dawn, swallow your losses, and go home.
Otherwise, I might lose my life here.
"Oh, they're all here."
Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and Huck stood in the doorway.
Nina greeted Yan, who was sullen in the corner, while behind them stood a strange creature.
“It’s really lively now.” Yak looked at the doorway and said, “At least for now, I think it’s lively enough to fill several mahjong tables.”
"What is that?"
“Don’t worry about it. More than this, I’m curious about your background. I bet you have a prepared explanation.” Ark looked around, then looked at Hark and said, “You should know that everyone here, except for that颓废男 over there, is a monster. You demon hunters just swaggered in like that. There’s a limit to how brazen you can be, isn’t there?”
“Ha, now I finally remember who you are.” Hack looked at Yak, scrutinizing him for a long, long time before saying, “This time I won’t forget.”
"That would be an honor. I would be grateful if you could remember me." Ark said this with a blank expression to cover up the fact that the situation was a bit too comical.
“Then let’s not waste time chatting like this. Kong, please step in.” Nina clapped her hands and said to the guy wearing a raven mask behind her.
After watching the guy stand up, Yak suddenly froze.
Denos was also stunned; its attention had been focused on the witcher in front of it. Only now did it shift its focus to this place.
But with just one glance, he left a deep impression on both of them.
Yak slowly got up, walked behind the table, and drew the curtains.
When he turned around, the muscles on his face, which should have been stiff, began to twitch.
For the first time, this guy showed an expression.
Almost everyone felt a strange pressure coming down on them, as if something was pressing down on the air.
They searched around for the source of the pressure, and suddenly realized that Yak's expression had suddenly become ferocious.
This guy, who usually doesn't have any expression and needs to use small facial expressions to express his emotions, suddenly put on expressions on his face.
It looked angry; this guy seemed to be angry. The moment it was seen, the expression of this creature, which had been trying to stay far away, turned ferocious, like a demon.
"Explain to me where you got your mask?" Ark's voice was very soft. "I advise you to tell me quickly, and don't lie, if you don't want to die."
