Chapter Thirty-Nine
The sound of metal scraping together, and the sound of groans.
It came from a child who was severely injured all over his body. He was chained and placed in a corner, and his body was covered in horrifying wounds.
Several sharp spikes pierced his body, allowing it to be better secured in place.
This is Wuming; he has already been arrested.
That night, he was no match for the two high-ranking clergymen. The combination of an ascetic and a paladin was already quite formidable, enough to get the nameless man arrested.
In addition, he had already been sufficiently tormented before.
Those were two high-damage sorcerers. Although he was ultimately defeated, they were enough to inflict considerable damage on him.
He suddenly felt himself being lifted up, and before he could speak, he felt a solid punch to his lower abdomen. In addition to damage to his internal organs, many of his bones were broken.
He pressed himself against the wall, then collapsed to the ground, convulsing like a lump of mud.
It hurt so much that it felt like it was going to die.
But each time this happened, he could feel his body recovering on its own, and this pitiful reserve of magic would prevent him from dying easily.
I reckon my mind will break down first, then my body. Wuming thought this, then felt his neck being gripped tightly.
He was lifted up again. Wuming didn't even have the strength to resist; he could only hear the sound of his cervical vertebrae breaking in his neck.
Finally, perhaps feeling they'd had enough, the other person kicked him in the ribs, breaking the few remaining intact bones before throwing him to the ground.
"Alpha, that's about enough." Ketchum pushed open the door and came in, looking at Alpha with a hint of reluctance.
This guy had no intention of showing the child any mercy, and each time he would inflict even deeper pain just when the child's bones were almost healed.
But the child would still open his mouth and curse loudly whenever he had the chance, laughing as if he felt no pain, like a madman.
But even a madman might not be so indifferent to his own life; perhaps he feels rejected. Since he's already rejected, there's no need to make his life any more precious.
Wuming lay on the ground, watching the two people leave.
Hahaha.
He suddenly laughed, a laugh filled with such pain. Because a broken bone fragment was embedded in his body, every breath caused him to writhe in agony, let alone laugh.
But he still wanted to laugh, even in such pain. He laughed loudly, mocking everything that wanted to harm him.
What a pathetic guy. Maybe he realized he had been abandoned, and that's why he became so reckless.
Outside the door, Carl watched the two men walk out.
This is Carl's house. Although they had discussed burning the house down that night, a series of events that followed saved the little house.
It took half a day to get rid of the bugs inside, and those disgusting things are no longer visible.
"I didn't get anything out of him," Alpha said directly, even though he hadn't asked him anything at all; he had just gone in, given him a good beating, and then left.
It had no intention of asking this guy anything, because such a manipulated person probably knew nothing at all.
Even if Alpha knew, he didn't think it was something that could be obtained through physical pain.
He just wanted to beat him up, nothing more. Just because he was an ascetic, the only way he could think of to make someone pay for their sins was through physical suffering.
All criminals must atone for their sins, otherwise they are unclean before God. Unclean things are destined for hell.
“The task of guarding him is entrusted to you.” Ketchum glanced at Karl: “This guy isn’t a demon; his abilities were bestowed upon him by someone else. I brought the Holy Stone Lock, so he can’t use his own abilities. Apart from the abilities he can use, he’s just a child. Guarding a child shouldn’t be difficult for you.”
"To be honest, it's too easy. I think I should go with you to find that strange thing, instead of staying here watching a guy who's lost his fighting ability." Karl frowned. "This kind of work can be left to the Knights. It's a simple matter for them."
“Perhaps, but I always feel a little uneasy. With you here, I won’t worry about this place.” Ketchum paused and said, “Besides, the remaining thing can’t defeat two high-ranking clerics, so it doesn’t dare to attack head-on.”
Carl hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
Although this child isn't a demon, his combat strength is definitely not weak. Even if the three of them were to face him one-on-one, they would need to be fully prepared.
Otherwise, he might be seriously injured in the battle against him.
After they left, Karl sat at the dining table and opened his scripture to look at it.
“You can come out now.” Carl looked at Lori, who was hiding in the corner. “They’ve gone far away.”
Then I saw a little girl run out from there. She sat down next to the table and seemed a little afraid to look at Karl.
"Do you know this guy?" Carl glanced at Lori. "You seem quite worried about the child."
Lori, realizing her thoughts had been exposed, immediately became shy and awkward.
Then she nodded slightly; she didn't really like lying, especially to Carl.
"reason."
“He saved me.” Lori looked up at Karl sincerely and said, “If it weren’t for him during Blood Day, I might have died.”
"Is that so?" Carl nodded, understanding Lori's feelings.
He understood, but he had no intention of compromising anything.
"What will happen to him?" Lori asked cautiously.
“Hanging, or being locked up,” Karl said without hesitation. “He’s unforgivable. He’ll be taken to the nearby cathedral for trial. There’s too much he can be found out about. He’s an unclean child.”
Lori wanted to say something, but she breathed a sigh of relief halfway through her sentence.
"Oh, really?" She lowered her eyes, and anyone could see her sadness.
Carl glanced at her and sighed helplessly.
......
Wuming looked up and saw the guy standing in front of him.
"Um, are you alright?" Lori hesitated for a moment before asking the question.
This question is really boring, because no matter what the answer is, it's the same: this guy is leaning against the wall, panting, covered in wounds, and his broken bones haven't fully healed yet.
This situation is not good no matter what, so it doesn't matter what this guy says now.
Anyway, the result is definitely not good, given my current physical condition.
However, Wuming didn't say anything; he just sat there, not wanting to look up at the guy.
Even though he had saved this guy before, Wuming didn't want to look up at him.
After all, I look so pathetic right now. You shouldn't meet with acquaintances when you're in such a state, because it always makes people feel ashamed in front of you.
The best outcome for Wuming would be for this guy to turn around and walk away from him; that would be the best thing for him.
He wants some peace and quiet now.
But the child did not intend to do as he wished. When he looked up again, he saw her squatting in front of him.
She seemed to be looking at her own wounds, things that shouldn't be shown to others—too gruesome. It was tantamount to digging up a grave and looking at the dead inside.
But Wuming sensed no fear in her eyes. He could only see sorrow.
This isn't the kind of emotion I should feel. If it weren't related to him, I might feel fear. If it were an adversary, they'd probably mock me.
But I felt sorrow.
Sadness is an emotion that should not be present in one's presence; it's like the expression a mouse has when it sees its fellow mouse being caught by a cat.
It's as if this guy and I are both rats.
Suddenly, Wuming understood. He began to smile bitterly, a smile so desperate and sorrowful, like a mouse that had stolen its cheese.
Because this person was also a rat, or rather, she was different from him. He was the imposter rat, while the person in front of him was the real one, the one that needed to be found.
“I never expected that the guy we were looking for would actually be a child like this,” Wuming said softly. “I thought it would be something else entirely.”
Lori didn't answer; she just slowly lowered her head.
“I have a question.” Nameless looked up and stared intently at Lori. “Why are you able to stay here calmly instead of running away? You shouldn’t be here right now. I don’t know what abilities the great demon god has given you, but Zhang has three high-ranking priests. Even the guy who gave me the power couldn’t win in the conflict with them. It’s dangerous here, especially for you.”
“I’m always in danger there; there’s never been a safe place for me.”
“Ha, it’s true what you said. Indeed, even after you leave here, you’ll still see clergy, lots of clergy. The world has no shortage of pawns who want to kill you.” Nameless spoke bluntly, his words carrying a sharp edge.
He was genuinely a little annoyed that the guy he had been searching for for so long turned out to be such a weak child.
She shouldn't be like this; at the very least, she should have a devil wrapped in a fragile body.
But in reality, perhaps only the devil would harbor hostility towards her. After all, this child truly shouldn't be suffering here. Perhaps she should have grown up in a church in a big city, become a nun, and become a good clergyman. That would be right, because she is a good girl and shouldn't have to endure pain and sorrow.
But now, only her death would bring joy to others. Fortunately, very few people know her true identity, which is good. It couldn't be better. However, keeping this a secret will become very troublesome.
"What would you like to eat?" Suddenly, Lori asked, something completely unrelated to the main topic.
Wuming paused for a moment, realizing that this guy was changing the subject.
She didn't want to think about those questions. Because she already knew the answers to those questions very well. She knew very well how the world treated her.
But she didn't intend to argue; that's just who she is. After all, for a demon, having a warm place to rest is a rare privilege.
"Forget it." Nameless shook his head. "Don't worry about me... I advise you to leave here as soon as possible, before anyone discovers you. Take a carriage from here all the way to Gu Yuanji. That's the closest forbidden zone to us. As long as you can get in, you'll be safe."
As a forbidden zone for life, that location is rather special because it is a place where gigantic, ultra-high-level monsters gather.
Including the colossal monster at the end of Blood Sun, it will likely head there as well. In that place, such monsters are considered minor; there are far too many monsters there that would only add color to one's nightmares.
The specific reasons are still unclear, but this is a fait accompli.
It's safe for humans, but not for demons. There must be a large reserve of magic power there, so she can gain a stable base as long as she goes there. Survive first, then worry about what comes next.
But Lori shook her head and didn't give a reason.
"Is that so?" Wuming slowly lowered his head. "Are you going to bow down to humanity?"
“A very kind person adopted me, and I don’t want to hurt him.”
"Maybe he's just a pedophile, haha. Although he looks like a child, how old are you?"
Sixteen years old.
"Huh? So you've only been a demon for less than four years?" Wuming was stunned. Judging from his appearance, the child looked to be no more than fourteen years old, more like twelve.
Like priests, once a demon gains the approval of a god or demon, time will freeze on her, and her appearance and age will be forever fixed at the moment of approval.
"But what are your abilities?" Nameless looked at Lori seriously. "I want to know why even the Central Church is wary of the Demon. I want to know what kind of abilities you have that make you so highly regarded."
But Lori didn't answer. She just slowly stood up and bowed deeply to him.
Wuming knew he had asked a question he shouldn't have, and could only sigh helplessly.
Indeed, even if he were truly a demon, he wouldn't easily reveal his abilities to others. This was because it concerned how many people would hunt him down, and how many would hunt him down.
The door opened and closed, and the child left.
Wuming slowly leaned against the wall, closed his eyes, and needed to conserve his energy before the next beating, so he could mock those guys.
