Chapter 124
"It really hurts me to say that I'm not good enough." Denos sighed helplessly, still unable to accept that the guy in front of him, who seemed more energetic than him, was his father.
If I'm not mistaken, he should be almost eighty now, right? He looks like he's eighteen, while I, at twenty-nine, look like I'm ninety-two.
Although neither time was accurate—after all, there was no point in keeping track of time in a place like this—Ghost Duke had told him a similar joke. Although he didn't find it funny, the joke still subconsciously popped into his mind.
Perhaps this is why I'm still an unserious person; it's really degenerate of me that such things would unconsciously pop into my head.
But speaking of which, it seems that guy was detained because he failed the security check.
However, everyone should be alright now, probably rescued long ago, so let's leave that guy for now.
"Speaking of which, aren't you busy now? I remember you were the principal when I left. As a principal, shouldn't you be too busy to even see your son?"
“I’m no longer the principal. The current principal is one of my former students. I’m too old to handle things anymore.”
"Hehe, you really don't look old. I thought you didn't think you were old."
"Getting old isn't something you can just accept; I'm definitely old now. Everyone gets old, and I've come to terms with it."
“You weren’t like this when I left. You always acted like I wasn’t old as long as I could still break a pair of chopsticks with my hands.”
“I can still break a bunch of chopsticks, but it’s no use. I’m getting old and I’m dying.” The guy looked at Denos and said, “You’ve come back just in time. If nothing unexpected happens, I have less than a year to live. If you had come back any later, I would have felt like I had a stone weighing on my mind.”
"You're going to die? Don't be ridiculous!" Denos was stunned: "You're saying you're going to die like that?"
Can't you tell?
"I really couldn't tell. If you hadn't told me, I would have thought you could live forever."
“Actually, my bones are hollow. I’ve been in that chaotic place for far too long, and that time has left me covered in scars.” He paused and said, “My bones are very fragile. If I fall now, I might never be able to get up again. Every day I can feel my whole body slowly becoming lighter.”
After a moment of silence, Denos said softly:
"Is it because of when you were with Ark?"
“That guy had been reminding me of this all along, but I didn’t pay attention. By the time I finally realized it, I was too old and it was completely irreversible.” He looked at Denos and said, “I can sense that you’re not too late, which is good. That way, after I pass on a few last things to you, I can go into my coffin.”
"This feels a bit like something out of a novel, where a dying old man gives something to his long-lost son. Seriously, aren't you worried that the guy in front of you right now is your child? I didn't feel anything when I heard you were going to die!"
“If you feel that it’s too big, I would think it might be fake, but your answer is exactly what I guessed. You are my son. Even if you weren’t, I would still take you as my godson.”
"What illogical reasoning," Denos sighed, looking at him and saying, "I bet everyone here knows your name, right? Seriously, is it really a good thing for someone as great as you to have fallen into this state?"
What do you mean?
“You’ve been hiding the fact that you’re going to die, and I doubt anyone knows yet,” Denos said, looking at him. “Dad, you should be respected here, but just now, no one even seemed to notice anything unusual about you. That means you’ve been hiding your secret all along, and judging from your behavior, I doubt anyone would associate you with death.”
The guy looked at Denos for a long time, then slowly shrugged and sat down opposite him.
"Actually, I didn't hide anything."
"Um?"
“I just told them normally that I was going to die, but nobody paid any attention to me.” He paused and said, “Nobody seemed to care that I was going to die.”
"Let me inquire a little, when did you bring this up?"
"Someone said this one morning after preparing breakfast for me."
"You'd be a fool to believe that. Take a good look in the mirror. I'd believe it if the guy standing in the mirror said he was the current God of War, okay?" Denos had no choice but to chuckle at the old man he hadn't seen in a long time. "But speaking of which, I remember Ark saying you used to be a slovenly guy."
“I’ve already explained why, haven’t I? That guy probably told you too. It’s all because I met your mom that I became like this.” He seemed quite nonchalant and said, “Isn’t that cool? I changed myself because of a woman, so now even if I’m about to die, I’m still trying to maintain my dignity.”
"Yet she still left you."
"Actually, I left voluntarily. She's an immortal demon, and for her, having a man who's like a withered tree is something that would shame her. So I left, accomplished something, and died cleanly. She'll be filled with glory." His eyes lit up completely when he mentioned that woman, looking even more excited and encouraged than before.
Denos had no choice but to believe that the man in front of him was his father. He couldn't help it even if he didn't believe him; he was the same way. Both of them appeared calm on the surface, but were unreliable underneath.
Come to think of it, shouldn't I also have a woman to change things up?
As he was thinking this, his father's eyes suddenly looked strange.
"Don't tell me you don't have a wife yet."
"Huh? I don't even have a girlfriend, okay?" Denos almost threw his hot tea at the table. "Can you please stop worrying about this?"
The air suddenly fell silent. His father looked at him with disbelief: "I'll be angry if you lie like this."
"I can swear a solemn oath."
"If my son still hasn't found a girlfriend by now, I'll strike him with lightning, or I'll strike myself with lightning." His father casually said, "I've made your solemn oath for you, you can continue."
At that moment, right there in the church, Ghost Duke leaned against the railing, his expression solemn.
Maybe I'll stay here until I rot away.
But maybe not, since it won't die no matter how you put it.
Good heavens, by the time they realize this, they probably won't even bring me dinner anymore.
Ahhh.
Ghost Lord was now in a state of collapse and wanted to crawl on the ground.
He had thought someone would come to rescue him soon, but a day had passed and there was still no sign of anything happening outside.
It's easy to understand; they've forgotten about themselves.
How should I express my current feelings? Perhaps only "breakdown" can describe it.
Those guys were supposed to be his comrades, right? They've forgotten all about coming to rescue him.
Ghost Duke patted his head, thinking about each person in the team one by one.
It's impossible for Lady to come and rescue me now; even I don't know how to approach her given her current personality. As for Ark, forget about it; he's probably already regretting bringing me into this team and is just waiting for a chance to get rid of me.
With Denos back home, Deedri leaving the team, and the two cats even less likely to come to their rescue, Denos was out of the question.
Lori?
How low had he fallen to expect a little girl to save him?
That would leave only one Karl.
Ghost Duke thought to himself, carefully recalling that the guy might be in the church up there right now.
If I remember correctly, that guy is currently a knight who has encountered danger outside. If he passes this identity verification, he will no longer have to worry about anything related to the church.
Thinking about it this way, it's actually quite nice. You can travel all over the world with a beautiful, ageless little girl, and you yourself are also ageless and immortal.
I just hope that before that happens, I can think of something to save myself.
Just as she was thinking this, the door suddenly opened, and a familiar middle-aged man stood in the doorway.
The high priest here, since he's the only high priest right now, seems to be called by this name. He probably does have a name, but it's just that no one has called him that yet.
“Hello, monster,” Ghost Duke greeted him before he could speak.
"I am not a monster." The high priest looked very strange.
"I just said what you wanted to say for you, and you answered what I wanted to answer in the process." Ghost Duke chuckled twice. "If you don't have anything to do, how about chatting with me? I have a lot of interesting stories to tell, and I can talk until sunset if you're willing to listen."
The high priest looked at the man and remained silent for a long time.
"Are you questioning whether I really can't die? Don't overthink it, give me a dagger and I'll prove it to you." Ghost Duke looked at his doubtful expression and said, "Use whatever method you can think of to verify this, I'll wait and see your surprised expression."
But the high priest simply shook his head and looked at him, asking a question.
"Why are you like this?" he said softly. "Didn't you ever think of rebelling?"
"Resist what?"
“God’s punishment,” he said, looking at Ghost Duke. “It seems you’ve been tormented quite badly.”
"I think you've been tortured pretty badly, and you're being punished by God? The gods of this world are already half-dead, okay?" Ghost Duke completely ignored this guy and even made a face at him: "If you could resist, why would you say so? I don't even know where that thing is now. As for resisting God or anything like that, sorry, I don't have such lofty ideals." Ghost Duke slowly leaned against the wall and carefully looked at his surroundings.
It must be said that the prison here is quite clean, not dirty at all. It's probably because someone cleans it regularly, or perhaps because no one has been here for a long time. There's a bed, a table, and even a chamber pot. It looks like a high-end residence.
He just can't go out. I heard that if someone like him with an unknown identity is confirmed to be innocent, he will be released and given a different identity so he can integrate into city life.
But, someone who can't die wants to prove they have no problems? What are they thinking? These guys' thinking is rigid; they only think about those few existing systems. I, at least, have an ability outside of the established system bestowed by a god. As someone who has transmigrated from reality, even if these guys can't understand me, they should at least have some limits.
Ghost Duke lay on the wall, thinking helplessly.
Numerous cases have proven that calling these guys single-minded is an understatement. Their brains are filled with only a few established systems; nothing else. When they encounter something unfamiliar, they immediately try to apply it to what they already know.
But that's not true; some things are simply incomprehensible and inexplicable. These guys, however, don't understand this principle and instead try their best to appear more authoritative.
What an incredibly boring guy.
Ghost Duke looked at the guy standing in front of him and just found him annoying.
I really don't know what this guy with the "I'm the villain" attitude is doing here. If he wants to harm the main characters, he should just do it already. It would be so much more fun to just give away experience points. Why bother chatting with this piece of trash? Just tell me what to do. Do you want him to be roasted in the fire for decades or sunk to the bottom of the sea to feed the fish? Anyway, I've been through it all, so I'm not surprised anymore.
But the man didn't leave; he continued to watch him until, much later, he unlocked the door and turned to leave.
Huh?
Ghost Duke stared blankly at the lock in front of him, unsure of what to say to express his current feelings.
Is this a signal for me to leave?
Did this guy eat too much for dinner, or is there some misunderstanding?
I don't know, but whatever the outcome, I just need to get out of here now.
With that thought in mind, Ghost Duke got up and prepared to set off.
They're not afraid of traps or being framed. They're so confident they can't die; even if they turn to mush, they can always revive. If someone tries to harm them, they'll just have to bear it. With a life this tough, what traps could they possibly worry about?
He left so carelessly, without giving it a second thought. The high priest watched him emerge from the dungeon and stride away without uttering a word.
Then slowly walk down and lock the door again.
"That guy's annoying," someone said behind him.
"It is indeed annoying. Is he even useful?" the high priest asked without turning his head.
"It doesn't seem to be useful; it's just like an ordinary person."
“Those who can't die aren't ordinary people.” The high priest paused and said, “Aren't they a demon god species?”
"If this is what a demon god is, then I really don't know how I should look at those noble demon gods with respect."
