Chapter 58 Mountain Tunnel - Part 2 The two returned to...
The two returned to the driver's seat. Kai and Anthony were connected to the internet, so they heard their conversation outside. As soon as they closed the door, they restarted the RV.
It turned off the roof spotlights and proceeded according to Anthony's radar scan. Although the tunnel was much easier to drive in than outside, the muddy ground still forced Kai to drive at a moderate speed.
Lu glanced at the time in the corner of the windshield—four in the morning—and decided not to go back to the car to continue sleeping. Anderson, sitting lazily in the passenger seat, also showed no intention of going back to sleep.
The tunnel was pitch black, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, and the only sound was the RV moving around. Lu Yi looked at the tunnel, which seemed like it could swallow people whole, with only the data on the glass screens around him emitting a faint glow.
"Can you tell me about what happened back then?" Lu Yi was planning to talk about something.
Anderson, who was feeling a bit sleepy, raised his head slightly upon hearing this, and his silver-gray eyes turned coldly to look at Lu Yi.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"About you and your third partner."
Lu Yi became increasingly suspicious. He was only seven years old at the time. The federal doctor gave Anderson a diagnosis of mental abnormality. He also saw Anderson excitedly trying to rush towards that human man in the arbitration court, with bloodshot eyes and a manic appearance. He believed that Anderson was really crazy. But now that he thinks about it... there are many doubts.
Anderson came from a distinguished family and received an excellent education. His father, Angus, was not only a general in the Western Federation but also a gentleman of good character. Under his tutelage, Anderson grew up to be elegant and polite, and it was impossible for him to have the idea of hitting humans.
Just like Lu Yi, no matter what happens, he would never lay a hand on a human.
And Anderson hasn't even marked that human yet... He hasn't even bitten the other person, so would he really hit them?
Anderson's expression was indifferent, and he said coldly, "I don't want to talk about it, and there's nothing to say."
“I want to know the truth.” Lu Yi frowned.
"Then what do you think is the truth?" Anderson smirked, a cold smile playing on his lips.
Lu Yi was silent for a moment, then slowly spoke: "At first I suspected Andy, after all, he's your younger brother, and if something happens to you, he can become the first heir..."
“It has nothing to do with my brother.” Anderson interrupted Lu Yi, his face showing impatience. “Alright, it’s no use saying anything now. I’m not coming back from the ten years I was imprisoned, and I can’t go back to the Federation in the future.”
He paused for a moment, then looked meaningfully at Lu Yi, who had also fled the Federation: "I think Anna not only ruined me, but she also ruined you to some extent..."
"Warning: Poisonous creatures have appeared in the area ahead. Warning: Poisonous creatures have appeared in the area ahead."
The two men in the driver's cab both turned pale and immediately looked ahead. Sure enough, pairs of fluorescent eyes appeared in the dark tunnel—on the ground, on the walls, and even on the tunnel ceiling!
"What kind of mutant is this?" Anderson narrowed his eyes and complained with disgust.
No sooner had he finished speaking than several mutated poisonous creatures pounced on them, baring their teeth at them through the windshield! Each one had thin, black bone wings growing from its back, like bats!
"The beast turns into a poisonous man?!"
Lu Yi and Anderson were both stunned. There were beastmen mixed with bat genes, but these creatures, thin as bones and with sparse hair, were clearly poison people!
Someone injected them with a mutation drug! Lu Yi immediately realized this, and swarms of bat-winged poisonous men continued to rush towards them from the depths of the tunnel!
"Lu Yi! Protect the plant cultivation box and solar panels on the roof!" Kai Ge's mechanical male voice became somewhat urgent: "They're destroying them!"
"Keep driving! The road is open, keep going! I'll get on the roof and chase them away!" Lu Yi quickly said to Kai Ge, then opened the door of the RV, which was still moving at high speed!
As soon as he opened the car door, a group of venomous bat-winged men with bared teeth and claws pounced on him. Lu Yi kicked the first one away, and the kicked-away venomous man then knocked away several other bat-winged men with flapping wings. Lu Yi gained some space and immediately flipped upwards, landing on the roof of the driver's side of the car.
Anderson opened the passenger door, reached into the air, grabbed the foot of a bat-winged venomous creature, and slammed it to the ground. The creature screamed "Ah!" and was immediately run over by the car wheel.
"Don't let the poisonous people into the car!" Lu Yi shouted from the roof of the car in his beast form, his five fingers growing sharp claws that slashed and tore apart the bat-winged poisonous people that pounced on him.
“I know.” Anderson rolled his eyes, gripping the car door, his long silver hair flying in the air. He wasn’t stupid.
Inside the carriage, Tang Bufan was awakened by the cold. He then heard a "thump, thump, thump" sound as he pounded on the window. Wrapped in a fur blanket, he groggily opened his eyes and met dozens of gleaming eyes outside the window.
"Aha—" He opened his mouth and let out a long yawn, oblivious to the dozens of pairs of eyes staring at him through the window. He remained in this daze for two or three minutes before being suddenly jolted awake by the sound of the RV turning.
A dusty, abandoned SUV suddenly appeared in front of the tunnel, forcing Kai to turn and avoid it.
The RV was driving very fast, and the sudden change of lanes caused Tang Bufan's thick animal hide and mattress to slide a distance. The storage boxes piled in the corner of the vehicle also moved with inertia. Tang Bufan opened his eyes wide and looked at the bat-winged poisonous people who were trying to pry open the window. He finally understood the current situation.
He scrambled to the corner of the carriage to get his sniper rifle.
"Xiao Tang! Please don't fight with the windows open! Please don't fight with the windows open!" Kai Ge immediately spoke to Tang Bufan through the vehicle's built-in loudspeaker: "The glass is bulletproof, they can't break it!"
"They're prying open the window!" Tang Bufan had already hugged his sniper rifle to his chest. A window had been pried open with a large crack, so a chilling draft kept seeping in through the gap, causing the temperature inside the carriage to drop considerably.
Fortunately, the car window was covered in frost, so frozen that it was difficult to pry it open; otherwise, Tang Bufan would have been injured by it.
Tang Bufan gritted his teeth, feeling anxious. He saw that the bat-winged poison man outside the window had already stretched out a withered hand. He hurriedly raised his sniper rifle, but hesitated after aiming, then put the gun down and ran quickly to the kitchen.
He picked up a gleaming silver kitchen knife and, with a ferocious look, chopped at the flailing hand!
"You dare to pry open my window! You dare to pry open my window!" Tang Bufan viciously slashed at the arm six or seven times before finally severing the blackened arm.
The bat-winged poisonous man let out a miserable cry, flapped its wings, and flew away with its bleeding severed arm in hand. But as soon as it left, another poisonous man pounced on it.
While trying to close the window, Tang Bufan continued to chop at its arm with the cleaver, regretting that his body was too weak and that he would have to chop several times to break the arm bone.
People can unleash their full potential in times of crisis. Tang Bufan's adrenaline surged, and he didn't feel cold in the car, which was more than ten degrees below zero, even though he was wearing a thin sweater. He didn't feel disgusted when he saw the exposed white bones of his arm. He frowned, gripped the kitchen knife, and chopped away fiercely until he completely closed the cracked window again.
The poisonous man's blackened severed arm fell onto Lu Yi's bedding. Tang Bufan took the opportunity to close the window, panting as he retreated with the blood-soaked kitchen knife, his feverish mind slowly calming down.
He first shuddered violently, then rushed to the sink and bent over, vomiting. He had been eating less since the vegetables stopped coming out, and now this vomiting made his stomach feel even emptier. But hearing the bat-winged poisoner still banging on the window, he quickly rallied, fiercely raised his arm to wipe his mouth, and returned to the window with red, wet eyes.
He put down the kitchen knife, picked up the cotton-padded coat on the ground and put it on, then picked up the kitchen knife again and began to search around the carriage to see if any windows had been pried open by the poisoner. Fortunately, there was only that one window; the other windows were all securely closed.
The latch on the pried-open car window was worn out. Tang Bufan wasn't reassured, so he rummaged through a storage box in the corner and found a roll of tape. He then returned to the window and began to stick the tape back on layer by layer until he used up the entire roll.
The RV suddenly slowed down. Tang Bufan was initially confused, but after looking out the window, he realized that the number of bat-winged poisoners had decreased significantly. He didn't know if they had broken through the densest section of the road or if they had been killed by Lu Yi and Anderson.
The RV was still slowing down. Tang Bufan thought for a moment, wrapped himself in a cotton-padded coat, grabbed a kitchen knife, and walked towards the driver's seat, wanting to check the situation ahead.
However, the metal door was closed, showing no sign of opening.
"Brother Kai, open the door." Tang Bufan raised his hand and knocked on the cold, hard door.
"Xiao Tang, the driver's cab is cold, and..."
"I understand the reasoning, just open it for me," Tang Bufan said without further ado.
Kai paused for a moment before opening the metal door. Tang Bufan strode inside and found that the windshield was almost completely covered in blood and grime, making it impossible to see the road.
From the roof of the RV, one could hear Lu Yi and Anderson walking around.
Tang Bufan tightened his cotton-padded coat and sat down in the driver's seat, shivering slightly. Although there was blood on the outside, he could still see the information on the screen inside the glass. Tang Bufan glanced at the time: 5:17 a.m.
"Record the video," Tang Bufan said simply.
Kai immediately projected the video footage from outside the car onto the glass screen. Only two of the six cameras were clear; the others were either covered in frost or stained with blood. Tang Bufan then reached out and zoomed in on the two videos, only to discover that they were in a dark tunnel.
"This tunnel was built in ancient China a thousand years ago. It runs east to west. We predicted that following it would lead us to the Northeast Plain, so we drove in," Kai explained to Tang Bufan.
Compared to groping forward under the snow, going through this tunnel was indeed more convenient, so Tang Bufan didn't say anything. However, he did see a row of large red slogans written on the dirty wall of the tunnel in the video:
The earth will bear witness—the last people to stand on this land will be humankind.
The words were written in simplified Chinese, standing out vividly in the dilapidated tunnel. What shocked Tang Bufan even more was that the line of red words ended with a wave totem.
