Chapter 59 Mountain Tunnel - 3 Tang Bufan in an instant...
Tang Bufan's mind went blank for a moment. He stared excitedly at the big red banner. After four months, he had finally found traces of that organization again.
Lu Yi and Anderson, who were outside, also saw the words on the wall, but neither of them could read Chinese. Anderson then raised his wrist and pointed the bracelet at the wall.
"Son, what does that writing say?" Anderson asked Anthony, confirming that the writing wasn't from a thousand years ago, as the red paint was too bright.
“Dad~ wrote that the land belongs to mankind~” Anthony translated simply.
By this time, most of the bat-winged poisoners had disappeared; they had either died at the hands of the two of them or escaped through the tunnel. Lu Yi, his feet clad in military leather boots, stepped onto the roof of the vehicle, frowning as he slowly walked toward Anderson.
"This tunnel is also a hidden experimental site for that organization."
"Isn't that obvious?" Anderson disgustedly raised his arm to wipe the filthy blood off his face. It smelled awful, so he decided to go back to the RV to wash his face.
There was plenty of water in the RV, and Kai kept replenishing the water tank with melted snow.
"Anderson." Lu Yi suddenly called out to him. Anderson looked up in surprise and saw Lu Yi staring straight ahead with his golden-green eyes in the darkness.
Anderson followed his gaze and noticed a small, rusty iron door embedded in the tunnel wall, its surface covered in a thick layer of dust, almost blending into the dirty tunnel walls.
Kaige had obviously seen the door too. He drove the RV to the front of the iron gate, and the heavy wheels came to a stop.
"Lu Yi!" Tang Bufan, wrapped in a thick wolf skin, poked his head out of the driver's side window, looked up at the two people on the roof, his dark eyes unable to hide his excitement: "It's that organization!"
Seeing his excitement, Lu Yi thought for a moment and then said to Anderson, "Let's get back in the car and have a meeting."
There was no doubt that Tang Bufan wanted to go through that door, but Lu Yi hesitated. Firstly, there were unknown dangers inside, and secondly, Tang Bufan's health was too poor at the moment, so even if Lu Yi carried him, he had to be careful not to do strenuous exercise.
For example, jumping from a height of several meters. Tang Bufan had previously mentioned that he would feel unwell from the impact.
The two returned to the carriage, where Lu Yi saw two severed arms of a poisonous human lying on their bedding. Tang Bufan was using a rag to grab them through the fabric before throwing them out of the carriage.
"Did the poisoners come in?" Lu Yi asked anxiously. There were too many poisoners at the time, and the RV was moving fast, so his attention was focused on the roof.
"A hand just reached in." Tang Bufan put the rag back in the kitchen, then pointed to the window that he had taped up several times: "The latch on that window is a bit broken."
"I'll fix it later."
"What are you fixing?" Anderson dragged over a camping chair, slammed it down next to their bedding, and sat down lazily. "We still have to go through that door, and we're not even sure if we'll be able to come back."
“The dust on the door is so thick, no one has opened it for at least a few years. There’s no one inside,” Lu Yi said. He paused, then added, “But there might be a bomb or some strange creature.”
Previously, on that desert mothership, the gigantic poisonous human was trapped in the engine room and couldn't get out, yet it still survived. Perhaps for the mutated poisonous human that had incorporated plant genes, it no longer needed to eat.
"Let's go in and take a look; maybe we'll find clues about that organization." Tang Bufan was so eager to contact that doctor that he was willing to take the risk.
Lu Yi still hesitated, looking at Tang Bufan's pale face: "We're about to reach the Northeast Plain. If we drive any further, we'll reach the Eastern Federation of Orcs. Teacher, weren't you wanted by that organization? Theoretically, they'll notice you as soon as you appear, and they might even take the initiative to contact you."
Therefore, in Lu Yi's opinion, there was no need for Tang Bufan to go in and take the risk. If he didn't find any useful information after exploring, he would only be wasting his time.
Tang Bufan fell silent upon hearing this, feeling that Lu Yi's thinking was correct, and thus hesitated.
Anderson was displeased. He glanced at the orc boy with his narrow eyes and said coldly, "Are you going to put the Federation aside for the sake of your personal feelings?"
Lu Yi frowned slightly, his expression not looking good.
Anderson continued, "This organization is causing trouble all over the world, and our Western Federation's borders have been affected. You actually want to abandon the clues right in front of you and leave?"
This is precisely where Lu Yi hesitated. If Tang Bufan weren't there, he would have gone through that door to investigate even if he were alone, but with Tang Bufan there, he wanted to ensure his safety.
Tang Bufan wasn't stupid. Seeing Lu Yi's furrowed brows and conflicted expression, he knew he was the one holding him back. So he said in a deep voice, "Let's go inside and take a look. Don't worry about me, I'll protect myself..."
"You can't protect yourself, my foot!" Anderson interrupted him sarcastically.
"..." Tang Bufan fell silent after being mocked by him.
Seeing that both Tang Bufan and Anderson wanted to go in, Lu could only sigh helplessly and made no further hesitation.
“Alright then,” he said, reaching out to grab Tang Bufan’s hand.
Tang Bufan's hands were ice-cold, as if they had no temperature, and they were trembling violently in Lu Yi's palm. Seeing the extent of the trembling, Lu Yi knew that Tang Bufan could not hold the gun.
“I’ll take the knife.” Tang Bufan looked at him seriously: “I don’t want you to carry me. It’s inconvenient for you to move around if you carry me. I’ll walk along the wall and walk behind you.”
Lu Yi was filled with worry and remained silent for several seconds before nodding.
He looked at Anderson, who was sitting there lazily: "You go behind the teacher and protect him."
Anderson rolled his eyes in annoyance and suggested, "How about I go in first, and you two follow behind me wearing the light screen glasses?"
He didn't want to walk behind Tang Bufan, who moved like an old man.
Lu Yi thought about it and decided that this would work. With Anderson scouting ahead, he could evacuate Tang Bufan in time if things went wrong.
The three of them, having reached an agreement, began preparations. Lu Yi wanted to wrap Tang Bufan in another layer of animal skin and tie him up with rope, but Tang Bufan refused. He already found it difficult to stand while wearing a wolf skin and felt it was too heavy.
“It’s quite warm in this tunnel; a wolf skin will suffice,” Tang Bufan said, putting on his light-screen glasses and tucking the pistol he hadn’t thrown away back into his belt.
"If you can't walk anymore, tell me immediately," Lu Yi instructed him anxiously.
"Mm." Tang Bufan looked up at him, smiled, and nodded.
Lu Yi only felt a little more at ease when Tang Bufan smiled. He couldn't help but reach out and stroke Tang Bufan's hair before putting on his light screen glasses.
"Finished chatting? Let's go." Anderson couldn't stand the lovey-dovey couple, so he opened the car door and jumped out first.
The tunnel was dark, with only the RV emitting a faint light that illuminated a small area. Tang Bufan, protected by Lu Yi, got out of the vehicle and turned to look at the tunnel ahead. It was so dark that he couldn't see anything, and the eerie atmosphere made him feel uneasy.
Suddenly, a bat-winged poisonous man leaped out of the darkness, but before he could get close, Lu Yi cleaved him in two with a single slash. Lu Yi then slung his long curved sword over his shoulder, finding it more effective than his claws.
Anderson had already reached the rusty iron gate. The gate was small, human-sized, and Anderson, who was 2.25 meters tall, was taller than the gate.
The door wasn't locked, and Anderson yanked it open in an instant, sending dust flying everywhere. Anderson waved his hand in front of his face, then bent down and went inside.
Tang Bufan was escorted inside by Lu Yi. His light-screen glasses had been switched to a greenish night vision mode, so he could see his surroundings as soon as he entered...
It turned out to be a very large warehouse.
All three were somewhat surprised. It was already rare to find a door in a tunnel, but they hadn't expected that there was such a large space hidden behind the door. There must have been a special purpose when it was first built.
Lu Yi closed the metal door with a loud "bang" in the darkness. The two of them slowly followed Anderson, both looking around the warehouse.
The air was stuffy and dusty, with a very unpleasant smell. There wasn't much stuff inside; it was spacious and somewhat like an underground parking garage.
“I think… this might be an air-raid shelter built a thousand years ago.” Lu Yi had a rough guess in his mind. “Judging from the construction, it’s not from World War II, but from World War III. This tunnel is probably a military tunnel.”
The air-raid shelters built by China during World War III... Tang Bufan understood. He had indeed seen people crawling into tunnels to avoid air raids in movies before.
“There must be a military base near this tunnel.” Anderson walked ahead of them and asked Anthony, “Son, did you scan it?”
"No~ Daddy~ My radar range isn't big enough," Anthony replied in a childish voice.
"It should have been destroyed," Lu Yi said. The nuclear bombs used in World War III could have destroyed a mountain. Landslides would have buried the military base in the ground long before the dust settled.
"Humans destroyed the land themselves, sent us orcs out to rebuild it, and now that the pollution has decreased, they want to take the land back from us. There's no such thing as a free lunch." Anderson sneered. "With the inherent flaws of humanity, war will never stop. Staying underground is actually the best way to keep the earth at peace."
"..." As a human being, Tang Bufan couldn't help but find Anderson's words somewhat jarring.
“It’s all the same,” Lu Yi said calmly. “We orcs have fought each other before.”
Anderson snorted coldly, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
The warehouse was empty of supplies, but contained a lot of garbage, and human bones covered in a thick layer of dust were scattered along the walls.
The heavy dust made footprints very clear, and the light screen glasses on the three people's faces marked dozens of footprint paths.
The AI determined the time of the footprints, finding that the vast majority were left five or six years ago, except for one very recent human footprint, which was determined to have been left two months ago.
Tang Bufan's heart skipped a beat. He hadn't expected the time to be so close. He thought back to two months ago... he and Lu Yi were on the Mongolian grasslands... if they had arrived at this mountain range half a month earlier, they might have run into that organization.
Following the footprints marked by the AI, the three walked to a corner of the warehouse and saw a closed basement entrance.
Without a doubt, that organization is conducting secret experiments down here.
