Chapter 9 Two Sheep

It is not uncommon for sheep to run here.

The borders of Qizhou and Baozhou are closely connected, and there are even several villages that are half in Qizhou and half in Baozhou. In daily life, people make no distinction between you and me, but things are different now.

"He's been here several times? Why don't we look for him for them?" Supervisor Li said after a moment of hesitation.

Zhang Zhicheng immediately stared.

"Why?" he said, "Duke Cheng has taught us that we must be absolutely ruthless to the Jin people. These little bastards will not surrender unless they are beaten."

Supervisor Li looked hesitant.

"Duke Cheng is not here now," he said, "and the Earl of Qinghe just issued an order a few days ago to maintain peace on the border and avoid disputes."

Zhang Zhicheng didn't like to hear this.

"What do you mean by causing trouble?" he said. "We have never caused trouble. How can we become trouble just because we are defending our country?"

Li Dujian didn't like to hear this either.

"Who said you were causing trouble? Don't make a fuss. I'm just reminding you that the world is different now and you need to change the way you do things," he said.

Zhang Zhicheng became even more depressed after hearing this.

"There are more and more bullshit rules." He said. "In the past, Duke Cheng did not allow any sloppiness except for military training and defense. Everything else was handled on the spot. Where did all these rules come from? Especially when talking about rules with the Jin people, fists are the rules."

Supervisor Li slammed the table.

"What do you call this rules? Why are you yelling at me?" He said with a sullen face, "Are there still rules?"

Zhang Zhicheng immediately stood up straight and answered seriously.

"I know you are not used to it now." Li Dujian said slowly, "But now is different from before. We have negotiated peace with the Jin people. We can't just fight and kill each other as before."

Zhang Zhicheng tried to hold back but still couldn't.

"Sir, we have negotiated peace, but the Jin people are still the Jin people. We have been dealing with them for many years, but we still don't know their nature." He said, "These guys are hard-nosed and will not tolerate softness. We can never be friendly with them."

Supervisor Li slammed the table again.

"Shut up," he glared at her. "Anyway, we have an order from above not to break the rules."

Zhang Zhicheng lowered his head and replied yes.

While they were talking here, a soldier ran into the hall at a rapid pace.

"Sir, the governor has sent someone." he shouted.

Supervisor Li immediately stood up from his chair.

"Please come in." He said respectfully, while walking quickly to greet them. After walking a few steps, he seemed to remember that Zhang Zhicheng was still standing here, "You can go down."

Zhang Zhicheng responded by looking at Li Dujian as he walked away quickly.

"Really? Is it necessary to be so respectful? Who took these civil servants seriously in the past?" He raised his head and muttered.

The governor of Qizhou Road was a civil servant, so the people he sent were naturally civil servants as well. If it were in the past, Li Dujian would not have taken them seriously at all, but now it is different from before.

This is all because Duke Cheng is not here.

"When will the Duke come back?"

Outside the garrison, a group of soldiers were either squatting or standing, looking at Zhang Zhicheng and talking.

"That's a long time."

"Yes, all the generals from other places have returned, and only the Duke is left."

Zhang Zhicheng spat out the dry grass in his mouth.

"It will be soon." He said vaguely.

As soon as he finished speaking, a soldier came running over.

"Sir Zhang, the chief inspector asked you to take people to find Jin Min's lost sheep," he said.

When these words were spoken, the soldiers present were also shocked.

"On what basis!" Zhang Zhicheng jumped up and shouted with his eyes wide open.

The soldier took a step back in fear.

"The governor knows about it and says that the people of Jin are pitiful. In order to keep the border stable and the two countries friendly, he asked you to help." He said hastily. He couldn't learn those flowery words. "Anyway, I want you to look for it. Whether you find it or not, you will be given an explanation."

Having said this, he ran away in a flash, fearing that he would be beaten by Zhang Zhicheng.

Zhang Zhicheng was so angry that he wanted to hit someone.

"I'll go and argue with them." He shouted, "The gold thief stole so many of our cattle and sheep. Damn it, now he wants us to find sheep for him."

The soldiers hurried to stop him. Although they were angry, they knew that they could not disobey the orders from their superiors.

"There is no need to argue with the superiors for the sake of the common people of Jin. You are exalting them."

Everyone gave their advice.

Zhang Zhicheng also knew that he was of little influence and that there was no way he could change the order given by the governor, so he could only give up in anger.

"Besides, just look for it if you ask us to. We can definitely find it," a soldier consoled.

But sometimes things just don't go as we wish. The two sheep that Jin Min lost were actually found, but they were two dead sheep.

They can be identified because their tails are dyed red.

This is not a local custom.

"We don't know whose sheep it is. It was hit by a dog and broke its leg. We picked it up and it died." The two villagers said tremblingly, "We asked around in the village and they all said it wasn't our sheep. We didn't expect..."

Although the country was peaceful now, the word "Jin people" was still a very frightening word to them. Now they heard that the two dead sheep belonged to the Jin people, and they turned pale with fear.

Will they be captured and buried with Jin Min’s sheep?

Zhang Zhicheng cursed in his heart, walked around the dead sheep, and his eyes rolled around.

"All sheep in the world look the same," he said, and suddenly drew his sword.

The two villagers were so scared that they almost fell to their knees. The wind from the knife slashed and the sheep's tail flew up.

"That's good." Zhang Zhicheng put his sword back and looked at the two dead sheep with their tails cut off on the ground with some satisfaction. He raised his hand and said, "Come on, since the fellow villagers are so kind, we won't be polite and go back to eat roasted lamb tonight."

The villagers and soldiers were stunned for a moment, then they understood.

The villagers kowtowed repeatedly with expressions of gratitude, while the soldiers deliberately shouted and laughed exaggeratedly as they carried up the dead sheep.

When night fell, a bonfire was lit under the garrison. A dozen soldiers gathered around it, watching the busy work. The two roasted lambs on the racks were sizzling with fat and smelled delicious. Many people had already drunk several bowls of wine with the aroma. Zhang Zhicheng was surrounded by his subordinates, who made fists and forced him to drink.

"It's ready," the soldier shouted as he cut off the meat from the lamb leg. "Please taste it first, sir."

Zhang Zhicheng stood up with a laugh, and just as he was about to take the mutton, a large group of people came galloping over.

"Zhang Zhicheng." Li Dujian shouted in a sharp voice, "What are you doing?"

It turned out that it was the Supervisor who came.

Zhang Zhicheng raised his glass while half drunk.

"Master Li is coming soon. I was just about to invite you." He said. "Come and eat mutton."

Li Dujian jumped off his horse with a stiff face, and kept winking at Zhang Zhicheng.

"Who let you drink?" he shouted.

But he was still a step too late, someone stepped past him from behind.

"Where did you get these sheep?" the man shouted sharply.

The bonfire illuminated his official robe, and his face looked gloomy and a little scary.

Zhang Zhicheng was half sober now and realized that this person was probably the official sent by the governor to inquire about the incident of the Jin people losing their sheep.

"It was given to us by our fellow villagers." He said loudly, "If you don't believe me, just go and ask."

As soon as he finished speaking, someone came out from the side and knelt down.

"Sir, I have a report. This is the sheep that was stolen from the Golden Man." He shouted, raising his hand high.

The two sheep tails in his hands were dyed red even more dazzling under the lighting of the bonfire.
