Chapter 10 For the stars
The sunlight streamed between the two of them, and the noisy crowd outside the Civil Affairs Bureau seemed to have been muted.
Wen Mu could clearly hear Song Xingran's breathing as he approached.
The man's eyelashes were almost transparent in the sunlight, and his pupils reflected two small images of her. As the distance between them gradually shortened, Wen Mu could smell the faint scent of mint candy on his breath.
The moment the two lips were about to touch, a light "pop" sound was heard, which was particularly clear in the quiet air.
Song Xingran raised his eyebrows, lowered his eyes to glance at the white back of the hand pressed against his lips, with a silent questioning look in his eyes.
Wen Mu looked calm: "It's the same if you kiss here."
Song Xingran tilted his head and smiled wickedly.
The wet and hot touch made Wen Mu retract his hand as if he had been electrocuted, and the remaining water marks on the back of his hand sparkled in the sunlight.
She wiped the wet mark with her other hand: "Are you a dog?"
"No," the man grinned, revealing two sharp fangs.
"I'm a little rabbit."
Wen Mu looked him up and down.
He is nearly 1.9 meters tall, with an inverted triangle figure with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His muscles are faintly visible under his black suit, and he has an angular, beautiful yet somewhat wild face.
Is he being cute?
Please, could he do something that matches his appearance?
"Can you be serious?" Wen Mu held up his glasses.
Song Xingran took a step forward, trapping her between himself and the stone pillar: "What should I do? I can't be serious when I see Teacher Wen."
His aura enveloped them like an invisible net.
Wen Mu looked up at him for a moment, then put his hand on his chest.
The man was obviously stunned for a moment, but soon showed an interested expression and let her fingers wander on his suit.
The white fingertips slowly slid down from her chest, passed through her taut abdomen, and finally stopped at the outside of her thigh. She could feel the muscles under her palm instantly tense, like a fully drawn bowstring.
"Teacher Wen, this is..." Song Xingran's voice became a little hoarse.
The fingers suddenly turned inwards and the man froze.
The next second, Wen Mu quickly took out a bunch of keys from his trouser pocket and twirled them around his fingertips.
"Do you mind if I borrow your car?" She shook the keys and turned away without waiting for his answer. Her long legs under her black shorts were dazzlingly white in the sunlight.
Song Xingran stood there for a while before coming back to his senses.
He looked down at his obviously tight trouser line, then looked at Wen Mu who had already walked to the Lamborghini, and suddenly laughed out loud.
"Hey!" He strode after him, "Do you know how to start this car?"
Wen Mu had already sat in the driver's seat and was studying the complicated control panel.
Hearing footsteps, she lowered the car window: "Try it and you'll know."
"It needs fingerprint unlocking." Song Xingran leaned over the roof of the car and looked at her. "Besides, this car has been modified. It's easy for people who have never driven a supercar to-"
With a "bang", the engine let out a low roar.
Wen Mu adjusted the rearview mirror and smiled at him. "I did a paper in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The mountain roads there are much more difficult to drive than this car."
Song Xingran narrowed his eyes: "You stole my key just for this?"
"What else?" Wen Mu pushed up his glasses. "What did Young Master Song think I was going to do?"
The sun shone through the windshield onto her face, and the eyes behind her lenses looked like a night sky filled with stars. Song Xingran suddenly reached out and grabbed the back of her neck, stopping just as their lips were about to touch.
"Next time," his breath was against her lips.
"Don't just talk the talk."
Wen Mu looked him straight in the eye and suddenly stepped on the accelerator. The Lamborghini suddenly jumped forward, forcing the man to let go and step back.
"We'll talk about it next time."
She rolled up the car window, and the black supercar sped out of the parking lot like an arrow, leaving Song Xingran standing there, grinning like a cat stealing some fish.
*
Wen Mu parked his car in the staff parking space at the back door of the planetarium and walked across two streets to the Ningbo University campus.
That black Lamborghini was too eye-catching, and she didn't want to be the focus of the campus forum.
The phone vibrated.
Lgnis: [Going to work?]
Wen Mu frowned.
How did he know his whereabouts?
Jupiter: [How do you know?]
Lgnis: [Because I have clairvoyance]
Jupiter: [Can you please listen to what I'm saying?]
Lgnis: [You're saying, you missed me so much]
Jupiter: [I miss you.]
Jupiter: [I want you to get out of here.]
After sending this message, she turned on the Do Not Disturb function and put her phone in her bag.
The campus is shaded by green trees in June, and the gray-white building of the Astronomy Building appears solemn and tranquil in the sun.
In front of the door of Office 515, Wen Mu knocked gently.
"Come in." A clear female voice came from inside.
Gao Chonghua was grading papers at his desk when he pushed the door open. He looked up at the noise and a smile immediately formed in the corners of his eyes. "Xiao Wen is here, come and sit down."
The office is filled with various star maps and small astronomical instruments, the bookshelves are filled with professional books, and there are several pots of succulents growing well on the windowsill.
"Sorry, Teacher Gao, I was delayed this morning by something." Wen Mu sat down on the visitor chair and put his bag at his feet.
Gao Chonghua waved his hand, stood up and poured her tea: "It's okay, it's okay, you young people have a lot of things to do."
She pushed a cup of steaming Longjing tea over and said, "Try it. My son just brought it back from Hangzhou."
Wen Mu took it with both hands, the aroma of tea refreshing. She noticed that the report on Yu Mo's recent observation data was spread out on the table.
"Xiaoyu's research on the composition of hot Jupiters is progressing well," Professor Gao said, following her gaze. "How about your Sino-foreign collaborative project? Is everything going well at the Max Planck Institute?"
"We've completed preliminary data processing for spectral analysis," Wen Mu said, pulling out a tablet from his bag and pulling up several charts. "We've found evidence of ionized iron in WASP-121b's atmosphere, which is consistent with the model's predictions."
Professor Gao put on his glasses and carefully examined the data, nodding occasionally. "Professor Schmidt of the Max Planck Institute thinks highly of you. During the last video conference, he specifically mentioned that he hopes you will be responsible for the later observation work at the European station."
Wen Mu's fingertips flicked across the tablet, pulling up another set of data. "Professor Schmidt, you're too kind to me. But if the project requires it, I'm willing to travel between China and Europe."
"It's a good thing for young people to travel more," Professor Gao said, taking a sip of tea. "But you've only just returned to China. Does your family have any objections?"
Wen Mu's fingers paused slightly.
Now, she is not only a daughter, but also a wife.
"It's just an academic exchange, it should be... no problem." She lowered her head and took a sip of tea to hide her expression.
"That's good." Professor Gao gave her a meaningful look and didn't ask any further questions. "By the way, how are you preparing for the academic report next Wednesday?"
"I've finished the PPT. It's mainly about a new method for calculating the atmospheric escape rate of exoplanets." Wen Mu put down his teacup. "I was just thinking of asking Professor Gao to help me see if there are any adjustments that need to be made."
"I trust you to do the job," Professor Gao said with a smile, pulling out a document from a drawer. "But there's something I need to tell you in advance. The school plans to expand its astronomical observatory, and they'd like you to participate in the site selection assessment."
Wen Mu's eyes lit up.
The existing observatory equipment at Ningbo University is outdated, and the expansion plan has been discussed for five or six years.
“Is Lenghu still the first choice?”
"We've tentatively decided on that location. The light pollution index and atmospheric stability both meet the requirements." Professor Gao handed over the documents. "But we still need to conduct an on-site inspection to determine the specific location. We might have to stay on the plateau for a week or two. Can you handle it?"
Wen Mu took the document and quickly glanced at it: "Even if there are problems, I have to go. You are so old and you still want to go, so I naturally can't hold you back."
"Hahaha, not bad."
While talking, Wen Mu caught a glimpse of a magpie sitting on a branch outside the window, holding a shiny metal wire in its mouth.
Somehow, she suddenly remembered that when Song Xingran licked the back of her hand this morning, there was a similar light in his eyes.
Also, quite cute.
"Xiao Wen?" Gao Chonghua's voice brought her back to reality. "Do you have any suggestions for this part of the calculation?"
Wen Mu quickly gathered his thoughts and refocused his attention on the data. The chirping of cicadas outside the astronomical building grew louder, but inside the office, the only sounds were the gentle hum of the tablet and the occasional flip of a page.
In this academic world she was familiar with, Wen Mu returned to his calm and self-possessed appearance as a doctor of astronomy.
*
As dusk fell, the street lights in front of the planetarium lit up one after another, casting mottled light and shadows on the asphalt road.
It was already eight o'clock in the evening when Wen Mu said goodbye to Professor Gao. There were few people on campus, only a few night cats rustling in the bushes.
The black Lamborghini was still parked quietly at the back door of the planetarium, like a dormant beast.
Wen Mu had just taken out his keys when a familiar voice came from behind him: "Dr. Wen! Are you still working so late?"
Planetarium Director Lin Zhi walked out of the side door carrying a briefcase, his eyes smiling behind his glasses: "I heard that you've been taking children on stargazing activities recently, and the response has been very good."
Wen Mu turned around and smiled, "As you should. The Summer Triangle is a good target for beginners."
She opened the driver's door while speaking with her head tilted. Just as she was about to get in, a pair of warm hands suddenly grasped her waist.
The hands were positioned very low, with the thumbs almost sinking into her buttocks, and the other four fingers firmly clasping her slender waist.
Wen Mu froze.
Lin Zhi's expression instantly became wonderful.
"I, I suddenly remembered that I have something else to do!" The old professor turned and left, throwing his briefcase into the air, and disappeared at the end of the path in a few steps.
A low chuckle came from behind her. The man straightened up slightly and pressed his chest against her waist and back: "Surprise."
"Teacher Wen, are you throwing yourself at me?"
Wen Mu thrust his elbow back suddenly and heard a muffled groan, but the hand on his waist not only did not loosen, but instead held him tighter.
Song Xingran exerted force and pulled her directly onto his legs. Through the thin shorts, she pressed against his thighs, and he could clearly feel the taut muscle lines under his suit pants.
"Are you going to murder your husband?" he breathed into her ear, a pained smile in his voice.
"No way?" Wen Mu said coldly.
"If I die, who will feed you?"
"No one does me better than me." Wen Mu retorted in English, his cold voice sounding particularly sexy in the night.
Song Xingran chuckled softly, the vibration of his chest coming through their backs pressed against each other: "Teacher Wen actually watches American movies too?"
“It’s just a tool for learning English.”
As soon as he finished speaking, his earlobe was suddenly bitten.
Wen Mu cried out softly, "Ah!" and the voice was so delicate that even she was startled.
The man behind him froze visibly, and then a triumphant laugh came from him: "Not serious."
Wen Mu'er's roots were burning: "When will you let me go?"
"Hold me for a while longer." Song Xingran's voice was hoarse, and his nose rubbed against the loose hair on the back of her neck.
Wen Mu said calmly, "If we hug for any longer, we'll be on the news."
"Don't worry, I've been there many times." His hand restlessly caressed her waist. "'Song San Shao Molests Respectful Women in the Street', I've even thought of a title."
Wen Mu struggled for a moment: "I'm scared."
"Didn't you promise me that you wouldn't attend social events?"
"What kind of social activity is this?" Song Xingran's lips were almost touching her earlobe.
"At most, it's just... a marital affair."
After a few more minutes of stalemate, Wen Mu was finally released.
She immediately jumped up from the man's legs and walked forward without looking back.
The roar of an engine could be heard from behind, and the Lamborghini was following her at a snail's pace.
The car window rolled down, and Song Xingran held the steering wheel with one hand: "Teacher Wen, we suggest you get in the car."
The students passing by looked sideways, and some even took out their cell phones.
Wen Mu quickened her pace, and the car also accelerated, always staying one meter to her side.
"Is there anything else?" Wen Mu finally stopped and asked through gritted teeth.
Song Xingran smiled harmlessly: "Mom and Dad called me to eat."
"Aunt Shen didn't tell me."
"So you sent me straight here to pick you up." He blinked. "Surprised?"
Wen Mu took a deep breath and said, "I'll go to the address myself."
"Are you angry?" Song Xingran tilted his head to look at her.
Wen Mu didn't say anything, but just looked at him quietly with those cold eyes.
"Okay, okay," the man raised his hands in surrender, "Tuscany, top floor."
*
Half an hour later, Wen Mu stood at the entrance to the hotel's top-floor terrace.
Pushing open the heavy glass door, she was stunned by the sight before her. The terrace was completely empty, save for a white-covered dining table in the center. Candlelight danced on crystal glasses, rose petals scattered around, and in the distance, the dazzling nightscape of Ningchuan City stretched out before her.
"Song Xingran?" she called softly.
"You're late." The man's voice came from behind her, and his warm chest pressed against her back.
Wen Mu turned around. Song Xingran had already stood behind her. His suit jacket was gone, and the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up to his elbows, revealing his sturdy forearms. He held two glasses of champagne, and candlelight flickered in his deep eyes.
"What are you doing?" Wen Mu took the wine glass and his fingertips accidentally touched his.
The man looked down at her, a sly smile on his lips: "Can't you see?"
"I'm dating you."
