Chapter 10: The adaptability of the Hui people is strong. Coming to Brando...

People have strong adaptability. Within three days of arriving at Brando's house, Mary went from being panic-stricken to being at ease.

Diego is very similar to Johnny when he was not disabled. He basically goes out early and comes back late every day. Diego leaves when Mary is not awake, and comes back at night when Mary is resting.

The two of them had staggered schedules, and Diego would not ask any questions as long as he came back to make sure his room and corridor were clean.

The rest of the rooms were unoccupied, so cleaning once a week was enough. Since there was no supervision, Mary quickly mastered the rhythm of cleaning, and life became simple and easy again.

It’s a pity... no evidence was found.

Diego's perceptiveness was inhuman. She had carefully restored the drawer she had opened, but somehow he had noticed her things had been moved. The next day, when Mary tried to look again, she found that all the drawers were locked. Unless she broke them open violently, there was no way to look inside.

This guy... is really tricky... but it also shows that there is something fishy going on.

Now she didn't dare to act rashly, so Mary had to keep calm and continue to be an ordinary maid.

The week passed quickly. The one-day holiday every week gave Mary the opportunity to see Johnny, which made her feel particularly good. When she saw Diego, the smile on her face did not fade away.

"Dear Mary, your smile is much more beautiful than usual." Diego handed her the salary and tapped the corner of her mouth with his finger: "You should smile more often."

Unused to Diego's familiarity, Mary simply nodded. Perhaps finding her rather boring, Diego waved his hand, "Let's go. Don't forget to come back."

"Yes, sir."

Mary put her meager salary into her pocket, walked out lightly, then hurriedly found a carriage and returned to her familiar home.

When the horses in the yard saw her, they barked a few times to welcome her.

Mary kissed the other person's forehead before knocking on the door.

"Who is it?" A somewhat depressed voice came out. Sensing Johnny's impatience, Mary quickly said, "It's me, Johnny, I'm back!"

The door opened suddenly, and Mary was the first to see Johnny's eyes, which were more beautiful than the sky.

He seemed to have just gotten up. He was wearing loose pajamas and his hair was messy. He looked even more childish and cute than usual.

"Mary!" Johnny shouted and rushed towards her. Mary quickly caught him, preventing the big boy from falling to the ground and bleeding from his nose.

"What on earth were you doing? You didn't leave a phone number, and I don't even know your address!" Johnny frantically checked Mary's face, neck, and arms. "Were you working with that cowboy? Did he do anything bad to you?" His chatter stunned Mary. Before she could reply, Johnny continued to yell, "Why have you lost weight? Why are there dark circles under your eyes? Did something happen?"

He came over and sniffed Mary's collar, feeling relieved only after making sure he didn't smell anyone else.

"I'm helping Mr. Manden investigate a case. It takes a month, and whether I succeed or fail, I'll get $3,000. I think it's a pretty good deal," Mary said. Johnny became even more nervous: "What's the matter?!" He muttered anxiously: "So much money... Did he ask you to kill someone and rob? Or to take the blame for someone else?"

"Calm down, Johnny," Mary patted Johnny's head soothingly. Seeing that he had calmed down, she slowly said, "This is what happened. A man named Diego Brando married a woman in her eighties. The woman died suddenly some time ago. Her friends suspect she was murdered. They asked Manden to investigate. But Manden really wants to investigate Lilith's case, and time is tight, so they asked me to go to Diego's house to collect clues."

I thought Johnny would calm down after my explanation, but his beautiful eyes widened even wider, and even his pink mouth opened and closed as wide as possible: "You! Say! What!?!!"

???

Unable to understand why Johnny looked like he was about to collapse, Mary became nervous: "Is it something terrible?"

Is Diego secretly a murderous monster? Or a cannibal? Or is he secretly involved in large-scale human trafficking or conducting human research in the hope of achieving immortality?

"He's the most despicable person I've ever met!" Johnny scratched his messy hair. "That old lady was definitely killed by him, there's no doubt about it. What's there to investigate?"

Seeing Mary didn't react, Johnny emphasized, "Really? He's a playboy, with so many women around him that you can't even count them! He's sarcastic and mean, and he loves to prick people's wounds..."

"Since you don't like him, Johnny, shouldn't you let me investigate?" Mary still didn't understand the logic. "If he really killed the old lady, shouldn't we find evidence and bring Mr. Manden to justice?"

"But Diego might do something bad to you!"

"Johnny, he's the same as you before. He hardly ever comes home. When he comes back, he just sleeps for a while and runs away the next day." Mary stayed there for a week and only saw Diego twice, each time for no more than a minute. She really didn't think Diego would do anything to her.

Johnny was speechless when he thought about how he had ignored Mary for nearly three months.

Never mind...it's only one month.

Damn it! I’m still worried!

Johnny turned his wheelchair back to the room without saying a word and quickly came out with a gun.

Johnny handed the loaded pistol to Mary without question, his face devoid of any joking expression. "If he dares to lay a hand on you, use this to kill him. Don't worry about the rest. I'll protect you. Do you understand?"

In fact, Mary found it more convenient not to use the pistol. The gunshot was loud, and the blood was difficult to clean up. But her instinct told her that if she didn't take the gun, Johnny might not allow her to do the mission again. So Mary obediently put the gun on her waist and didn't refuse.

Sure enough, after doing this, Johnny finally felt relieved.

It's funny to say that Mary is always worried that Johnny will be bullied and unable to take care of himself, while Johnny knows Mary's skills, but he is always worried about her.

The past flashed through Mary's mind, then quickly passed. It seemed like those things could truly be shaken off. Her eyes felt strangely swollen and painful, and she remembered Diego touching the corner of her mouth today. Although she didn't like it, she sensed it was a way of expressing intimacy, so she followed suit and gently touched Johnny's cheek.

"Johnny, I'm glad you told me this... Thank you. I'll keep the gun you gave me."

"It's...it's okay." Johnny felt that this was strange and had a terrorist tone.

Forget it… let's not dwell on these little issues. Mary seems more cheerful since she left, which is a good thing. Johnny thought back to the first time he met Mary. She exuded a cold, indifferent air, her silver eyes devoid of any emotion, making it easy to associate her with knives, arrows, and any other sharp weapon capable of harming someone.

Feeling that the place where Mary touched was a little hot, Johnny smiled and said, "Are we eating out or at home today?"

"Let's go home." Mary walked to the refrigerator. "Johnny, did you go out to restock? There are so many things."

"Well, I finish the meat first. I can't eat vegetables without meat." Johnny pouted. "Besides, I have to exercise every day. I don't have the energy to eat only fruits and vegetables."

"Well, then I'll go to a nearby farm this afternoon and buy you some good meat to store. That way it will be more convenient."

"I'll go with you."

"OK."

The two chatted about family matters. Mary took out the potatoes to peel them, while Johnny took out the onions and radishes.

Since they were not picky eaters and their cooking skills were not very good, they just made a dish of beef soup, sausage and mashed potatoes, vegetable salad and a few slices of bread for lunch.

At Diego's house, Mary's three meals a day were quite ordinary. She could only manage to avoid starvation, but the flavors were unimaginable. Consequently, she ate quickly and with a healthy appetite, even swallowing radishes, which she had previously disliked, without batting an eyelid. Johnny, sensing Mary's recent struggles, mentally felt sorry for Diego and prepared a filling meal for her.

After dinner, Mary washed the dishes and Johnny went back to his room to change his clothes.

When he came out after cleaning up, he saw Mary sitting on a chair, wearing a plain black dress and without even a decent piece of jewelry.

Maybe I should buy her something.

Johnny thought to himself, with a hint of anticipation on his face: "Come on, Mary, let's go out for a walk."

"Well, let's go."
