Chapter 21: Departure Gritting his teeth and holding back the cry of pain, Diego...

Gritting his teeth to hold back the cry of pain, Diego tore off his hypocritical smile, and ferocious anger filled his entire face.

Mary was even more surprised: "How could you come here?!"

"Why not?" The newcomer's steps were eerily light, and even when they were close to the ground, no sound could be heard. "Isn't it normal to rush over to confirm the authenticity of a loved one after hearing news about them?"

"Fuck your dad!" Diego had never heard Mary swear, which surprised him. This was the first time Mary had shown such a vivid expression in front of him. But what made him feel even more outrageous was that the guy who shot him was actually the current President of the United States - Fanny Valentine!

Even Diego, a man who was generally open to everything, was speechless at the shock of this magical scene. But he quickly recovered, for Fani Valentine, calmly and without warning, shot him again. If Mary hadn't pulled him behind her, he would have been dead.

"Your skills remain at the same level, which is very good." Even though he didn't hit him, there was no unnecessary surprise on Valentine's face. He was also a master at managing expressions.

This man!

Diego forced himself to calm down, but he couldn't hide the hatred and humiliation in his eyes. The other party didn't pay any attention to him at all, just looking at Mary intently: "I am really sad that you left without saying goodbye, but if you come back to me, I will choose to let bygones be bygones."

"Leaving without saying goodbye?" Mary sneered, but she didn't bother to argue with this uninvited guest. Diego's good eyesight once again saw a cold glint flash from the other person's sleeve, which was evidence that Mary was about to make a move.

Already knowing the woman's abilities, Diego silently pondered the interests involved.

Originally, the person he wanted to get close to most was Fanny Valentine, but her behavior was clearly that of a lunatic. Mary looked honest, but her identity was a mystery.

Should he be loyal to Fani, help capture Mary and distance himself from the matter? Or... should he help Mary, who has no money and no status?

Of course it is

"Follow me!" Without hesitation, Diego grabbed Mary's hand and dashed downstairs at his fastest speed ever, completely unaware that his actions had inadvertently saved his own life. A long whistle emanated from Diego's mouth, and the sound of horse hooves began to approach from afar.

"Get down!" Mary pressed Diego's head down again, and the last bullet in the pistol missed the opportunity.

"Get on the horse!" Diego's strength should not be underestimated. He pulled Mary onto the silver bullet with one hand. The smart horse started galloping without the owner's urging.

The wind howled past them. Diego's chest pressed tightly against Mary's back, and Mary could feel his rapidly beating heart slowly return to normal. As the villa disappeared from their sight, the man behind her started a conversation: "I didn't expect you to be the president's woman. It seems I underestimated you."

"I'm not."

"Huh? No?" Diego sneered, "Your man almost killed me out of jealousy. I didn't know the people in power in our country were such bastards."

"You're right, he's a piece of shit." Mary nodded in agreement, but she knew in her heart that Fani would never feel jealous, nor would she want to kill Diego for such a trivial matter. Unless there was a deep grudge between them, or Fani believed Diego was a threat to the security of the United States.

But with Diego's identity, he couldn't possibly contact Fani, and he probably wouldn't do anything to harm the country. So why did Fani want to kill Diego? Mary had no way of knowing what Fani was thinking, but she knew what he would do next: "You'd better figure out where to escape. Fani will try to erase your existence."

A gun was pressed against her back. Mary paused, her voice unable to tell whether she was happy or angry. "So you want to kill me now to vent your anger?"

"Why not? You caused me to be hunted and almost died. Isn't this a normal thing?"

"Before you shoot, I'll break your wrist." Mary thought for a moment and added, "And it was you who was trying to use me as a go-between in the first place. You're reaping the consequences."

Diego snorted coldly, abandoning all previous grudges and starting a new conversation: "It's true that I want to stay out of the spotlight, and you also want to get rid of the president's control. I think we can start that deal now."

Remembering Diego's previous persuasive lobbying, Mary expressed her willingness to listen attentively with a tacit attitude.

"I want you to be my bodyguard and take me to the desert."

"......?" Mary turned her head silently, and the emotions flashing in her eyes fully reflected one sentence: Are you crazy?

Because they had formed a temporary alliance, Diego didn't beat around the bush. Instead, he said directly, "After this is done, I can give you $100,000. That's enough for you to escape the United States and live a comfortable life anywhere."

This is indeed a huge sum of money, but the premise is: "Where do you get so much money?" Mary said: "According to the current situation, you should be spending more than you earn."

"That's why I'm going to the desert," Diego replied impatiently. "I'm going to take back the old woman's inheritance. That's the money I deserve."

"Speaking of which, I forgot to ask you. What did you do to Lilith?" Mary gripped the reins, slowing the horse down. "Answer my question."

The man behind him was breathing even faster than before, but his tone was deliberately muted. "You're more capable than I thought. You even managed to dig up Lilith." Since Mary had already investigated the matter thoroughly, Diego explained the whole story clearly. "Not long after I married her, I could tell that the old woman was desperate for death. Since she didn't want to live anymore... hmph... I simply fulfilled her wish and went to find Lilith to buy her medicine."

"That woman was obviously just someone who did things for a fee, but she was moved by compassion and changed the medicine on her own initiative. But the result was still in favor of me, DIO. The old woman's health continued to deteriorate and she died soon." Although she said it so contemptuously, Mary unexpectedly felt that Diego was not as happy as she had imagined.

"After she died, I thought I'd inherited everything, but I didn't expect the old woman to donate all her money to Lilith. What a joke!!" His chest heaved violently, and his arms involuntarily wrapped around Mary's waist. "That belongs to me, Dio!"

If the millions of dollars that she thought she could get suddenly became unavailable... Mary thought about it and felt that this would indeed be a very painful thing.

"The day before yesterday, the detective I hired finally found that woman's whereabouts. She's heading to Arizona, which is Native American territory. I don't know what that crazy woman is doing there, but I have to go!" Diego looked at Mary. "I heard that Native Americans are very cruel and there are wild beasts in the desert at night, so I think hiring you as a bodyguard is a more cost-effective deal."

"Then will you kill Lilith?" Mary asked softly.

"Why should I kill her? I won't get any more money." Diego rolled his eyes slightly.

If she didn't kill anyone, and just did an escort mission, she could earn $100,000...it was truly a huge temptation. Normally, Fani Valentine would never come to her in person. But this time, he showed up right after Blackmoya left, which only meant he wanted her to clean up the mess again, or even a mission so disgusting it was unimaginable.

No matter which direction it took, Mary was not willing to accept it. If she really got used to that kind of life, she would not choose to leave.

As long as she had this money, she could take Johnny away and give him a good life.

"In that case, let's quickly replenish our supplies and maps and set off." Mary increased the speed of the horse: "The faster the better."

……………………………………

"Is this all Diego's information?" Fani Valentine was reading the contents of a piece of paper while sipping hot tea in Ms. Ter's luxurious villa. Blackmoya, standing beside him, bowed his head humbly. "Yes... This is... my entire life experience..."

"Actually... humph... just a lowly poor bastard." Fani Valentine pointed at the other flamboyantly dressed man and said, "Ferdinand, you should already know what to do next."

The other party bowed humbly, but his tone contained an indescribable arrogance: "Of course, Mr. President."

…………………………

Because Silver Bullet couldn't carry two people on a single horse for a long distance, Diego chose a gentle horse for Mary. During the journey, many women approached Diego, but he rarely rejected them all.

Time waits for no one, and no one knows what the president will do to him next. Although the president seems to be an inexplicable guy, Diego will not underestimate him after sitting in power for so many years. But he really can't think of what benefits will be gained by killing him.

Diego looked at Mary beside him and thought to himself.

Why would the president want to kill Mary? Could it really be jealousy alone? Or did their conversation touch upon some unknown territory that led the president to kill her?

For example...the substitute that Mary mentioned?

"Hey, what exactly is a stand-in?"

Mary tilted her head to look at Diego, who had a serious expression, and said, "Literally."

"Tsk, is everything you eat glue every day? Your mouth is so sticky, you won't spit anything out."

“It’s a superpower.”

"ha?!"

Perhaps thinking the conversation was pointless, or perhaps feeling uncomfortable with Diego's expression, Mary said in a rare, unpleasant tone, "Believe it or not."

But she didn't know why, but Diego smiled.

He said, "Mary, you are much cuter now than before."

Mary, who was completely unable to understand Diego's train of thought, could only remain silent, but her behavior made Diego laugh even more happily.

He said, like a persuasive teacher, "Speaking of superpowers, do you mean you know a lot of people with superpowers?"

"That's right." Mary looked at Diego, who treated her like a fool, and explained seriously, "The current president is a very powerful Stand user." Thinking of his outrageous Stand ability, Mary shrugged and said, "You should be glad you chose me, because only I can save your life."
