Chapter 56 Hiding "I'm fine..." Dorothy endured her ankle...
"I'm fine..." Dorothy endured the pain in her ankle and slowly stood up, leaning against the wall. Mary, noticing her embarrassment, put her arm around her waist to lend her support. Dorothy's nose flushed, but she couldn't help but say thank you like a goldfish blowing bubbles.
Jello turned to Mary again and said in a serious tone, "Have you really decided to save her?" It was more like he was asking himself rather than asking her.
"Um"
"Huh..." Jero exhaled. He had a stern look, and when he looked serious, it was easy to associate him with a medieval knight. "Okay, you two, follow me and hurry up. Don't fall behind!"
He went ahead into the winding lane, and Mary hurried after him, carrying Dorothy on her back.
"Are you...really going to save me? I'll cause a lot of trouble..." Dorothy said with a sob, but her desire to survive made her pinch the cloth on Mary's shoulders.
Mary's answer was short and powerful: "Yes", so straightforward that Dorothy was dazed.
She buried her head in Mary's brown hair, and her silent tears wet her muddy cuffs.
Dorothy kept her face pressed against Mary's warm back because she was afraid of encountering witnesses along the way. However, this also made her completely unaware of their final destination. However, it didn't matter because she trusted Mary wholeheartedly and didn't care where she was being taken.
After walking around for an unknown amount of time, Dorothy was finally put down by Mary. Looking at the scene in front of her, she stood there in a daze.
"Is there no other place to choose?" Mary asked. Jero Zeppelin waved his hand and said, "You can't be picky now. I'm glad I have a place to hide you."
"Okay." Mary calmly accepted the decision to hide in the morgue, and corrected Jello's words: "She hid alone, not me."
Jello looked at Mary, his arms folded across his chest. "If you don't mind the trouble, then I don't mind. That guy who collapsed in the alley will definitely track you down when he wakes up. I can't protect you all the time, and if that bastard gets hold of you, you might get into trouble."
Dorothy's body trembled reflexively. She looked at Mary and whispered, "He's right... If he finds you, he'll definitely find a way to kill you. He's such a disgusting guy."
Mary was silent for a moment before agreeing to stay here: "If you only stay here for a week, it shouldn't be a problem." Anyway, Blackmoya needed to recuperate, and they had basically found all the places they needed to stay, so it wouldn't be a big problem for her to rest for a while.
But she still had a question: "Since you said that guy might find out about me, then he could find out about Blackmoya. He lives in the inpatient department, so he won't be found, right?"
"That's fine. He entered the inpatient department for legitimate reasons. Our hospital will be responsible for him and protect the privacy of patients. Private detectives are not allowed to set foot in the inpatient department. Unfortunately, the inpatient department is full now, so she can only stay here."
"Oh, I see." Mary's confusion was resolved and she sat down on the ground naturally.
Perhaps because Mary accepted her fate too quickly, Jello felt a bit guilty. "I have a lot of brothers and sisters at home, and they are more naughty than monkeys. It's impossible to hide you at home without them finding you."
"This place is nice. I don't think anyone would search here." Mary was quite satisfied with the place. Right now, the poor woman needed to avoid being discovered. Everything else was secondary.
Dorothy quickly accepted it. As long as she could escape that demon, such a thing wouldn't be a problem. "So... what are you going to do?" Jero Zeppelin asked the core question. "You should know that when that man wakes up, the first thing he'll do is look for her." He pointed at the pale Dorothy and said, "She can only stay in the morgue for a month at most. Otherwise, she'll get sick and have psychological problems." He paused. "Are you going to... take her away?"
"How long does it take for it to rain here?" Mary's incoherent words annoyed Jero. "Why are you so fond of riddles?"
Mary didn't reply, but looked directly into Jeroboam's eyes. Zeppeli licked his lower lip and said, "Who knows? I can't predict the weather."
"Oh," Mary nodded, without explaining her strange words, and simply said, "Could you please give us something to eat and drink now? I'm hungry."
"Today I can only give you water. It's so late, who would come out to sell food?" Jero Zeppeli knew that it was ridiculously late, so he prepared to make a quick decision.
Turning around gracefully, Jello rushed out with his long legs, not noticing that Mary had also quietly left the morgue.
Dorothy originally thought that this place was not that scary, but as soon as Mary left, she felt that the place was full of ominous chill.
She never knew there was such a place under the hospital. The corpses were placed on a table similar to a bench. Although the bodies were covered with a layer of white cloth, the complete outline of the human being could still be seen.
What was strange was that there were green iron balls placed on those corpses. They moved without wind and spun around in the abdomen of the corpses, which was so weird that it made people want to scream.
Not daring to look at the bodies shrouded in white sheets around her, Dorothy huddled in the corner, wrapping her arms around herself.
Fortunately, Mary came back not long after leaving.
She didn't explain what she was doing, and Dorothy was smart enough not to ask any more questions. She just carefully took Mary's hand, feeling the thin warmth in her palm.
"Um...thank you." Dorothy lowered her head and thanked Mary. She knew that her words were too simple and not worthy of the help of the woman in front of her, but she had nothing else now and didn't know how to thank her at all.
"It's okay." Mary shook her head. "My name is Mary. What's your name?"
"My name is Dorothy Crewe. You can just call me Dorothy."
"I'm back!" Jello's loud voice broke the silence around them. Mary scratched her ears, thinking that all the people lying down could be woken up by Jello.
But Jello didn't realize that he was being subtly disliked. He excitedly threw the big bag on his shoulder to the ground, making a crisp tinkling sound: "Look what good things I brought you!"
He said as he took something out of his pocket: "Haha, I didn't expect everyone to have so many snacks! I can grab a handful with just a quick search!" He stuffed the pork jerky into Mary's hand: "This is delicious, eat it quickly!"
Then he took out dried fish, biscuits, nuts, and a handful of chocolate: "I've tried this chocolate before, it tastes really good. If you like it, I'll buy more tomorrow."
Mary and Dorothy ate everything they were given.
"This is the oil lamp in the warehouse. You can use it first. I will replace it with a new one when it's used up." Jello lit the small lamp with firewood. The warm light looked so precious in the darkness, like a dancing star.
The candlelight reflected in Dorothy's eyes, bringing a touch of life to her withered face. She carefully placed the lamp in front of Mary, her lips curled up slightly.
"The number of quilts in the inpatient department needs to be counted every day, so I will come over very early tomorrow to take the quilts over. You guys should be careful when sleeping these days and put on your clothes before going to bed. Do you hear me?" The man with long golden hair kept muttering, and he deftly spread out the quilt folded into a square and draped it over the shoulders of the two men.
"Okay, go away. It's late." Mary waved her hand, signaling the guy to go home quickly.
Seeing that the two men were in good spirits, Jello waved goodbye to them.
He walked home in the moonlight, and was not surprised to find his father awake when he opened the door.
His father was very serious about relationships between men and women, so when he found out he had a girlfriend, he couldn't help but ask about it.
"Good evening, father." Jello took off his boots and made sure that there was nothing wrong with him before slowly walking to the middle-aged man.
"What's that woman's name?"
"Mary."
"Just Mary?" My father's brows were furrowed, and he obviously didn't believe that someone didn't have a surname.
Jero Zeppeli complained bitterly in his heart, thinking he had been too careless for not confirming this with Mary. He could only bite the bullet and answer, "When we first met, she said her name was Mary, so I didn't ask any further questions..."
His father saw that Jero was not lying, so he pondered and asked his next question: "How long have you known each other?"
"It wasn't long, but I could clearly feel that she was a brave and righteous girl." This was the truth. Jero Zeppelin admired Mary's initiative and her innocent heart that was willing to help strangers.
"Is that so?" His father stood up. Although there was no smile on his face, his expression was much gentler than before. "Then cherish her well."
"I will." Jello nodded seriously: "I won't be perfunctory to such a good girl." But if the other party doesn't want to continue with him and leaves here, it's not his fault.
After Gregory confirmed that his son would be in charge, he changed the subject: "Tomorrow morning, it's the same old routine. Don't forget."
Jero remembered his father's decisive act of killing a condemned inmate, and the expression on his face faded. At that moment, his expression became identical to his father's, calm yet slightly numb. "I understand, Father."
…………
When Mary opened her eyes, she saw Jeroboam Zeppeli walking towards them on tiptoe.
After seeing her wake up, the other party still maintained that funny posture and moved towards her, making a gesture to her to be quiet.
Mary caught a glimpse of Dorothy still holding the corner of the quilt while sleeping, so she quietly slipped out from under the quilt and stood there waiting for Zeppeli to come over.
The first thing he did when he came to Mary's side was to touch her forehead with the back of his hand. After confirming that Mary did not have a fever, he quietly said with relief: "You have a really good physique." Glancing at the white cloth around him, Jerozeppelin added: "Your mentality is also first-class."
Mary accepted the compliment with peace of mind and nodded in agreement: "Thank you for the compliment."
Jello glanced at his watch, then at Dorothy, who was soundly asleep. "Never mind. I'll wait five more minutes." He pulled out a few bottles of ointment from his trouser pocket. "This green one is for bruises, and the other two brown ones are for skin injuries. They're painful to apply, but they're very effective, so you have to make sure she uses them properly."
"Okay," Mary said, placing them against the wall and asking, "Is there any movement from that guy?"
"Not at the moment," Jero Zeppelin shook his head. "I haven't heard any rumors, but we must not take it lightly. Don't run around during this period of time, do you hear me?" As he said this, he poked Mary's eyebrows, as if he thought she was unreliable.
Mary thought he was a bit long-winded, and wondered if it was a common trait among doctors. But she still replied, "I understand."
Jero Zeppelin heard the perfunctory tone in her words and was quite dissatisfied: "You guy..."
Seeing that he seemed to be about to say something again, Mary immediately changed the subject: "Your hair is beautiful, can I touch it?"
"Touch my hair? What's so good about touching my hair?" He muttered, but still obediently smoothed his long hair in front of him and handed the ends of his hair to Mary. She stepped forward, took it in her hand, shook it, and smelled the fragrance of shampoo.
His hair wasn't as bright as Diego's, nor as smooth and silky as Johnny's, but it was just right.
Mary slid her fingers through the hair, feeling its fluffiness, like stroking the belly fur of a long-haired dog, warm and relaxing. Even though Jero was human, Mary couldn't help but think of him as a rare comfort dog. They really did look alike.
Mary moved her fingers upwards and stroked Jello's hair, and once again looked into those lively eyes.
Not only are his eyes beautiful in color, but his eyelashes are also so beautiful that they make people's heart beat faster. Every time he blinks his eyelids, his eyelashes dance, scratching the air and making people feel itchy.
They stared at each other unconsciously, and finally Jello gave in and was the first to look away.
"Have you touched enough?" This time it was his turn to remove her hand: "There is no room for delay in returning the quilt."
He walked up to Dorothy, cleared his throat, and called out, "Get up!"
The poor girl was almost frightened and jumped up. She sat up from the ground reflexively and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that it was Jello.
"Um... Hello... Good morning." She spoke in a disorganized manner, quickly slipping off the ground and hiding behind Mary. Jello didn't mind that she was being treated like a monster, but quickly folded the messy quilt into a square.
Dorothy's memory slowly returned, and she remembered that Jello had said yesterday that he would come to get the quilt, and she also remembered all the experiences of yesterday.
Only now did she feel that she had escaped from the clutches of the devil.
"Let's go. See you at noon." After saying this, Jello disappeared from their sight.
Is this... really enough?
Dorothy thought to herself that she could have accepted staying in the dark, waiting for the man to give up looking for her. But now...
She looked at Mary who was forced to suffer beside her and felt that she could no longer sit there and wait for death.
