Chapter 80: Clothes. This sentence is so ordinary, even related to love...
This sentence was so ordinary, and had nothing to do with love, but Mary didn't know why her heart began to beat faster involuntarily.
What does this feel like?
Mary pressed her hand to her heart, trying her best to suppress the inexplicable throbbing.
It seems...very happy, yet a little bittersweet.
This feeling is very similar to the one when I met Johnny on a snowy night.
"I'm really fine, Jero." Mary rubbed Jero's forehead with the back of her head and comforted him, "Didn't you check me with the iron ball? I'm completely fine. There's nothing wrong with me."
"This isn't a good thing!" Jello yelled, making Mary's ears ring. "You're injured, and it doesn't hurt! I hate that you have this strange ability that makes you lose all self-care!"
This sentence was like a heavy hammer hitting Mary on the head. In her past cognition, this ability was her capital for making a living and she was envied by everyone.
Many people died despite suffering less severe injuries than hers, but no matter how serious her injuries were, she would recover quickly and be full of life.
Obviously... this was her greatest strength, yet Jello denied it. But... she wasn't angry at all.
Jero pinched Mary's cheek from behind, completely ignoring the fact that they were riding on a galloping horse. "Listen, Mary. When you were born into this world, you were destined to have close connections with others. In other words, you don't just live for yourself, you live for everyone."
"Jero..."
"Don't interrupt me. Listen carefully! Your injury will cause a series of chain reactions." Jello pressed Mary's cheek against his chest and took the reins of the horse, controlling her. "Like now, I'm in pain, even suffering from it."
The heartbeat was still increasing, and Mary felt that it was about to break free from her chest and fly away like thousands of butterflies.
Even though her entire body was still soaked in her damp, cold clothes, she felt a deadly warmth. The cold wind, the passersby, and everything that wasn't Jeroboam vanished from Mary's sight.
The only thing she noticed was Jello's eyes, which were so bright and beautiful.
Even though it was winter in Naples, the vigorous vitality in the other person's eyes was still like ivy in spring, constantly invading Mary's limbs and covering her layer by layer.
So warm...
"...I understand, Jero. I swear that I will cherish myself in the future and will never let myself be hurt easily." Mary seldom swore, but once she swore, she would always keep her word.
"I hope so." Jello snorted twice and got off the horse. "We're here."
Looking at the house in front of her, these words popped up in Mary's mind:
Don't show off your wealth
This was Mary's first impression of Jero's house. There was really nothing special about its appearance, and no indication of the owner's preferences could be made. It looked like a model room that no one lived in.
Jello didn't notice Mary's contemplation. He unceremoniously pulled her down and carried her home like a child, never forgetting to rub Mary's cold fingertips with his warm hands. "You... If I weren't conscious right now, I'd think you were holding hands with a snowman."
Mary found this somewhat amusing, and curled her lips. Seeing this, Jero patted her head in annoyance: "You don't laugh when I tell jokes, but laugh when you shouldn't. Do you have a sense of humor in the wrong way?"
Mary felt that Jello should have questioned himself before saying this. However, she was so moved by Jello that she decided to be generous and tolerate his logical flaws.
Jello took the key out of his pocket with one hand and opened the door smoothly. He put Mary on the sofa and began to talk to himself: "You shouldn't be cold, right? Do you need me to light the fireplace? Forget it, you'll be so hot that you'll die. I'd better go make you a cup of hot tea... No, I still need to find you some clothes."
He said "wait for me" in a hurry and rushed upstairs. Mary had no choice but to tell him to slow down and not to be in a hurry.
How could Jello slow down? He wanted to run as fast as possible. Within three minutes, he rushed down the stairs, making a deafening sound.
"Try this dress on me. On the staking of my dignity as a doctor, I think the size is right!" He threw the dress on Mary rudely, like a passionate but ignorant big stupid dog.
It was a fitted, deep purple dress with a delicate bow at the neckline and a long, languid ribbon that draped down to her waist. The long sleeves were warm and comfortable, with a unique, flared cuff. The hem was an elegant fishtail. If it weren't for the color of Kaz's hair, Mary would have preferred it.
Seeing Mary standing there stupidly, Jello patted her on the back rudely: "What are you dawdling for? Go change your clothes."
"This...this isn't good." Mary hesitated. "You took your mother's clothes and gave them to me without her consent..."
Before Mary could finish her words, Jello raised his eyebrows and interrupted her: "Who told you that this is my mother's clothes?"
"???" Seeing the smug expression on Jello's face, Mary couldn't contain her surprise, "Yours?!"
"Ah!" He proudly put his hands on his hips and raised his chin. "Hehe, change your clothes first, then I'll tell you about its origins." His expression changed and he shouted, "Go!"
"...I think I need to take a shower before changing clothes." Mary felt that if she didn't wash thoroughly, there would be basically no difference between changing clothes and not changing clothes.
Because of worrying, Jello slapped his forehead hard and felt that he was really stupid today.
"You go... forget it." He picked up Mary without warning and rushed to the second floor. "The bathroom on the first floor is being used by my brothers and sisters. Who knows what's in there? You should go to my bathroom and wash up."
"Oh... okay." Mary lowered her head and thanked him. For some reason, she didn't dare to look directly at the other person's overly handsome face.
Jello kicked open his half-closed door. Mary took a quick glance and saw the layout of the other person's room clearly.
It was not as wild as Mary had imagined, but rather so conventional and unremarkable.
The bookshelves were filled with medical books and textbooks, each one looking worn from countless readings. The large bed in the center of the room, draped in snow-white sheets, reminded one of a hospital bed. If it weren't for the brown teddy bear next to the bed, Mary would have thought she was back in the inpatient ward of the hospital.
"Okay, just take a good bath." Jello put Mary down, explained to her how to use the bathing facilities inside, and then went downstairs to make tea to ward off the cold.
Although Mary wanted to secretly peek into Jello's room to see if there was anything that matched his personality, she resisted the urge to rummage through other people's things.
As a child from a medical family, the toiletries in Jello's room are all homemade. Whether it is shampoo or shower gel, there are no manufacturer marks, only a few simple drawings of bears.
Mary sniffed for a long time before she matched them with the smell of Jello's hair and body, and took out two liquids of the same color to clean each place.
Don’t mention it, it’s really useful.
Mary had never kneaded out such rich and delicate foam. She felt like a bubble snowman from head to toe, with the fresh fragrance of herbs all over her body.
I don’t know if they will sell these things. If Mary goes back, she wants to take several boxes with her.
After scrubbing herself clean, she carefully examined her skin. She didn't know if it was a psychological effect, but she felt her skin was smoother than before.
It's really useful
Mary's rich inner thoughts did not affect her speed. After wiping her hair with a handkerchief until it was no longer dripping, she quickly changed into the skirt that Jello gave her.
Although she was only wearing one piece of clothing, the material of the clothing was quite thick. For Mary, who was not afraid of the cold, this piece of clothing was more than enough for indoors.
When Mary came downstairs carrying her dirty clothes, Jello just came out of the kitchen with two cups of steaming tea in his hands.
The rising steam scalded Jero's cheeks. He turned away, trying to hide his burning sensation, and placed the cup on the coffee table. After making sure the heat on his face had subsided, he waved to Mary, "Come over and have some tea."
"Where do I put all these dirty clothes?"
Jero was speechless: "That pair of rags must have been lost. To be honest, if you gave it to a beggar, he would find it shabby."
Mary was also worried about how to clean the blood stains on it. After hearing what Jello said, she thought it made sense, so she folded it and threw it into the trash can beside her.
"Mary, you..."
"Um?"
The man coughed dryly twice, his voice a little nervous. "Not bad," he said, taking Mary's hand and motioning her to spin with his force. "It's just as good as I expected."
Mary looked at the blurry silhouette reflected in the glass window. It was indeed better than she had imagined, so she graciously accepted the compliment. "Thank you for the compliment." Then she walked towards the sofa. "What did you brew? Why does it smell like apples?"
"It's apple cinnamon tea." Jello followed closely behind, following Mary's steps and sitting next to her.
He blew on the edge of the teacup and said with some regret: "Actually, I would rather you drink coffee, but looking at your current state, I think you are more suitable for this kind of calming tea."
"Thank you." Mary smiled, picked up the teacup to warm her hands, and asked curiously, "Didn't you say you had several brothers and sisters? Where are they?"
"They're all in school at this hour." Jello waved his hand, saying with some disdain, "They were very well behaved before the age of five. Once they're over that age... hmph, you've got a lot of self-control if you don't throw them out."
At this point, he rubbed the back of his head in frustration: "What a bunch of damn bastards! I don't even know what's in their heads. Every time I tutor them, I wish I could stuff them back into my mother's belly and retrain them!!"
Jello made a funny face, thinking that Mary would laugh at his pitiful appearance.
But she didn't
She took a sip of the tea, her lowered eyes filled with other thoughts.
"It's great..." She sighed, her tone complex and subtle, "It's great that you have so many family members."
