Chapter 17: Staying Overnight

Tong Wenyao surveyed the courtyard. In the middle of the hall hung bacon, flanked by rooms. It was clear this family was well-off. Seeing Wu Guang looking at her, she spoke crisply, "Hello, Uncle Wu Guang."

Wu Guang smiled and said, "You can just call me Uncle Guang." Xin'er followed suit and shouted, "Hello, Uncle Guang." This made the two of them closer and less awkward.

"There are so many of you. I'll clear out an extra room for you!" Second Uncle quickly reached out to stop him. "No, no, just let the children and women stay in the room. We old men can just stay in the hall for one night."

Wu Guang disagreed, "How can this be possible! There's hot water boiling in the backyard kitchen. Go take a shower. I'll go clean up now."

"Then we'll clean up after you. Let the children and women take a shower in the back first."

"Okay." Wu Guang didn't hesitate and started to clean up. Tong Wenyao lowered his head and moved the table, and asked, "Uncle Wu Guang, why don't you see Auntie?"

Wu Guang opened the quilt and spread it on the bed, brushing off the dust.

"I live alone at home, and I haven't even married yet." Tong Wenyao felt a little embarrassed, thinking someone like Wu Guang was already married. "Then I shouldn't call you Uncle Wu, I should call you Brother Wu." Wu Guang waved his hand. "Oh, I don't care about that. It's you who have been in exile all this time, thank you for the hard work."

After making the bed, he said to Tong Hong, "There are still a few steamed buns in the kitchen, you can eat them." Then he locked his door. Wen Jiang, who was standing nearby, also heard it and said, "Dad, Uncle Wu Guang is a kind person."

Tong Hong touched his head and said, "I see. I'll help him if I can in the future."

"Um."

Here, after they arrived at the kitchen, they saw hot water and directly took it out to wash the child. Tong Wenyao's mother originally washed her, but she was shy and had shame syndrome, so she washed it herself. Later, her mother washed Xin'er.

Cui's mother kept the fire going while she waited for them to finish washing before washing herself. Fortunately, they planned to wash quickly and wait until they settled in the thatched cottage tomorrow to wash more thoroughly. Now, they just wanted to wash and go to bed, so as not to dirty other people's houses.

After a while, they took a shower and washed their hair quickly, and then warmed themselves by the fire in front of the stove. When they saw the steamed buns on the stove were white flour buns, they couldn't help but be a little surprised. Tong Bo said, "Uncle Wu Guang told them that they can eat them." Several people shared the buns and felt a little full. They didn't go back to their rooms to rest until their bodies were warm and their hair was dry.

After so many days of traveling, this was the best sleep they had ever had.

Snoring could be heard in the room. Tong Wenyao couldn't sleep, so she slipped into the space while they were asleep. In her backyard, besides grapes, there were also four orange trees, each laden with fruit.

She hurriedly picked the grapes from the shelf and planned to put them in the space. She also discovered that things in the backyard could not be kept fresh, only things in the villa could be kept fresh.

Looking at the ripe grapes on the ground, she couldn't help but feel a little distressed. If she had known this would happen, she would have brought them out of the space for them to eat. Because she was only nine years old and not tall enough, she could only carry a stool from the villa to pick grapes. After picking a full basket, she dragged it back into the villa and put it away. It was strange that no matter how hard she worked in the villa, she seemed never to tire. Occasionally, she would feel tired, but as soon as she drank the spring water, she would be full of energy again.

She wondered if this spring water was a living spring. Otherwise, how could it be so effective? Could drinking this water cure someone sick? She didn't know yet, but the spring water was not abundant, only a handful of it gushing out every day. She had originally thought of putting it in a bamboo tube and giving it to her family to drink, but since only a small amount gushed out every day, she gave up.

But this time, she was busy picking grapes and was very tired. She was thirsty and drank the spring water, only to discover its efficacy! So, could her great strength also be attributed to the spring water? She had originally thought it was due to the original owner's physical condition, but she didn't expect it to be the spring water's credit. Her face was filled with joy. She didn't expect that God would treat her well.

Thinking that the original owner was a female supporting role in the later period, she pursed her lips again. Fortunately, she was far away from the heroine now, so she was not worried about conflict with her. She was mainly afraid that as the male protagonist's white moonlight, the original owner would act all kinds of artificially with the heroine when she returned. She felt a headache when she thought about it, so she simply stopped thinking about it for the time being.

She went to the kitchen to fry some steak. Her body was still growing, so she needed to replenish her nutrition. She took a shower before coming out. The quilt in Wu Guang's house was filled with willow catkins mixed with cotton, and the material was also cotton and linen. It felt cold when the skin touched it. Fortunately, they were asleep, and except for the place where she slept, the other places were still warm. He fell asleep with Xin'er in his arms.

Early the next morning, Tong's mother packed her things and waited for them at the door. Cui's mother cleaned the bed they slept on last night and returned it to the owner. Second Uncle and Wu Gonggao returned the bed, thanking him for taking them in last night.

Village Chief Wu was waiting at the door. Not long after Tong Wenyao and Xin'er came out, they followed. "Village Chief Wu, please take us there and settle us down." He puffed on his pipe, his face filled with smoke as he spoke. "Sure, sure."

The thatched hut was at the end of the village, and on the way there, one had to pass through the middle of the village. Children and many adults were looking at them curiously in front of the hut. Tong Wen Yao saw that many children were still wearing thin clothes, and the shoes on their feet did not fit their feet, and some even had a hole in them.

A quarter of an hour later, they arrived at the thatched hut that Village Chief Wu mentioned. It had three rooms connected together, and there was a small thatched house next to it where firewood was stored. The thatch on the firewood had been half blown away by the wind, and one of the walls of the house was broken. When they walked into the yard, it was overgrown with weeds.

Village Chief Wu couldn't help but feel embarrassed at this time, and said to Tong Hong, "There hasn't been much farm work to do in the village recently. I asked them to come over this morning to help clean up. There are so many people, I think they will be cleaned up by this morning and ready to move in at night."

Second Uncle was filled with gratitude, repeatedly praising Village Chief Wu for his thoughtfulness. He waved his hand after hearing this and said, "We villagers are quite united, and we have great respect for the generals guarding the border, so they came to help you as soon as I asked."

Second Uncle's eyes were red. He originally joined the army to fight for the honor of his family. When he heard what Village Chief Wu said, he knew that he was also guarding their home, so he earned their gratitude.

There were sounds of lively laughter coming from the side. Tong Wenyao looked and saw a group of men and women carrying things. The first person to speak in the crowd was a middle-aged man with no right arm. His sleeve was tied in a knot. "General, why are you still crying so much? I saw it from a distance."

Tong Hong heard the familiar voice and looked up. It was the deputy general who had fought with him through thick and thin. "Wu Ping, why are you here?"
