Chapter 26 Who are you trying to fool, huh?

The car turned onto another, slightly darker asphalt road as the steering wheel was turned.

The car's headlights were on, illuminating the tiny dust particles floating in the air against the warm yellow light of the streetlights.

Wen Zhaonian remained calm, but the darkness in his eyes was unfathomable: "Didn't you say that your company had already told us not to continue following this matter?"

Sensing the sudden coldness in his words, Li Tangyan was curious but didn't know where to begin.

I could only continue the conversation.

That's what they say.

She paused here, feigning mystery, and said, "But I have a backup plan."

After speaking, Li Tangyan stared intently at Wen Zhaonian's face, as if afraid of missing any of his expressions.

He thought it would pique the other person's interest, but to his surprise, the other person just scoffed.

Under the warm light, his expression appeared somewhat indifferent.

"What's your backup plan?"

"Of course—"

Li Tangyan had taken out the bag of beef jerky that Wen Zhaonian had "given" to her from her pocket at some point and was playing with the small serrations on it.

His expression softened, and his words carried a hint of tenderness.

Wen Zhaonian took in Li Tangyan's reaction, and in an instant, his eyes darkened again.

Before she could finish speaking, a hint of unspoken sourness crept into her voice, followed by another soft snort: "So, you call me 'baby' after all?"

Wen Zhaonian's voice, with its metallic quality, was particularly noticeable in the quiet environment.

Li Tangyan suddenly tightened her palms, her eyes slightly widening in surprise.

"That's right."

"Hey, how did you know?"

The words that slipped out took on a different meaning when they reached Wen Zhaonian's ears.

He looked away and didn't say anything more.

The atmosphere inside the car instantly plummeted to freezing point.

Li Tangyan looked at his tense profile, and after going through their conversation in her mind, she suddenly had a flash of inspiration and seemed to understand something.

He turned to the side and secretly reached into the snack bag behind him.

He then clenched one fist and grabbed the seatbelt with the other, moving closer to the driver's seat.

With a smile that curved her eyes, she said, "Are you jealous?"

"That's a very good female friend of mine."

Li Tang emphasized the words "female friend".

The next second, sure enough, the person paused for a moment, and then cracks appeared in his otherwise composed expression.

Seeing this, Li Tangyan's smile deepened, and she boldly poked his forearm again.

Only when the person looked at him through the rearview mirror did he open his hand, revealing the fructose hidden in his palm.

Her voice was soft and gentle, with a hint of teasing: "Good boy~ don't be angry anymore, I'll treat you to candy."

Unintentional flirting is the most deadly.

The sudden sound of brakes seemed somewhat abrupt on the quiet road.

Along the roadside, pedestrians looked on with curiosity.

A fallen leaf drifted in through the half-open window and landed on her shoulder.

Her hands, which had been resting on the steering wheel, loosened, and then she saw Wen Zhaonian lean towards her.

Before Li Tangyan could back away, her arm brushed against his fair wrist.

With long, slender fingers, he placed a leaf on her shoulder and tucked it into his palm.

At that moment, Li Tangyan felt her breathing become rapid.

Time seemed to stand still; even Wen Zhaonian's action of withdrawing his hand appeared slow and drawn out.

Until he took the candy from her hand, the slight coolness of the touch, seemingly unintentional, gave her the illusion that her five senses were magnified infinitely.

"Who are you trying to fool, hmm?"

Wen Zhaonian spoke, his voice soft and gentle, almost lingering.

In an instant, Li Tangyan felt a dryness in her throat, and her rapid heartbeat made her feel somewhat helpless.

She opened her lips, but before she could speak, her phone, which was on her lap, rang.

Wen Zhaonian looked at the person who was still frozen in place, the corners of his lips curled up, and before looking away, his words were tinged with an ambiguous smile: "Answer the phone."

Upon hearing this, Li Tangyan blushed and then realized what was happening, so she looked away.

She stared at the name flashing on her phone screen, swallowed hard, and waited until she calmed herself before answering the call, feigning surprise.

[Editor Xiao, what brings you to call me so late?]

[Still pretending with me? Tell me the truth, did you do that thing online?]

【How could that be! I remember what you said this morning: 'I'd rather die than lose my job.'】

Are you sure?

I swear!

I swear I am not in control of how things unfolded.

As soon as Li Tangyan finished speaking, a low laugh came from the side.

She glanced back while partially covering her phone and saw the man's neck curve in a sexy way as his Adam's apple rose.

Looking up through the rearview mirror, one could see a very narrow crease at the corner of the person's eye.

Li Tangyan's face flushed, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

Is someone next to you?

Li Tangyan gave him a reproachful look and hummed in response.

He then grabbed the seatbelt, turned slightly to the side, and looked out the window to try and distract himself.

On the other end, Xiao Yi probably knew there were people around and couldn't say much, or perhaps she just wanted to get the answer she needed from her.

How much truth is in irrelevant statements is acceptable, as long as it's enough to get by.

So the person on the other end didn't say anything more, gave a few more reminders, and then hung up the phone.

After dropping Li Tangyan off, Wen Zhaonian did not go home immediately, but instead drove in the opposite direction.

The night was hazy, and the moon, hanging high in the night sky, quietly hid behind the sparse clouds.

The early autumn night was slightly cool, and the dwindling chirping of cicadas was gradually replaced by other sounds.

The car finally stopped in front of the North Gate. Wen Zhaonian didn't get out of the car immediately, but instead reached out and opened the glove compartment next to the passenger seat.

Upon closer inspection, all that could be seen inside, besides some everyday necessities, was a medicine box about two fingers long.

That was something Li Tangyan couldn't find no matter how much she rummaged through her bag when she got on the bus.

After a long while, Wen Zhaonian finally got out of the car.

Unlike other patients who were confused about where to find the emergency room, Wen Zhaonian, who had just accompanied Li Tangyan to the emergency room during the day, seemed to know the way very well.

As soon as I got out of the car, I walked straight to the west outpatient building hidden behind the main building without stopping.

The faint scent of disinfectant wafted into his nose the moment he stepped into the building.

Wen Zhaonian stood in front of the elevator, quietly watching the numbers on it change.

Let the cool breeze blow down from the vent, fluttering the hem of your clothes and revealing their subtle outlines.

bite--

The tightly closed elevator doors opened, and a young man soon emerged, supporting an elderly woman.

Wen Zhaonian took a step back and waited for the two to leave before stepping inside.

He pressed the button for the fifth floor, and when the elevator doors opened again, he saw the place he was looking for.

"Hello, has Dr. Guo returned yet?"
