Chapter 34 What you can't have is always the best.

As soon as the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday ended, Li Tangyan went on a business trip to a neighboring city with Xiao Yi.

The daily schedule was so packed that Li Tangyan only realized on the day before it ended that she and Wen Zhaonian hadn't been in contact for several days.

After leaving the meeting room, Xiao Yi glanced at the person next to her who was staring blankly at their phone.

He patted her on the shoulder and smiled knowingly: "Waiting for your boyfriend's call?"

"You've worked hard these past few days. Get some rest tonight, and you can go home tomorrow."

"I'm not—" Upon hearing this, Li Tangyan's hand gripping the phone tightened, and soon the tips of her fingers turned white.

A few strands of her shoulder-length short hair fell as she lowered her head slightly, and her fair face was still tinged with a faint pink.

Her gaze fell on the off-screen phone, her long, dark eyelashes fluttered, and a hint of conflict lingered in her eyes.

However, Xiao Yi didn't think much of it. Remembering that she had an appointment later, she said a few more words to Li Tangyan and then hurriedly left.

After Xiao Yi left, Li Tangyan glanced at the time and realized it was still early, so she decided to wander around.

Not far from where I walked, I saw an elderly man, around seventy or eighty years old, lying on the roadside. His forehead looked like it had been scraped and was bleeding profusely.

Li Tangyan ran over to check on the old woman's condition, but couldn't tell how badly she had fallen, so she didn't dare to help her up rashly.

The only thing I could do was call an ambulance and then see if I had anything on me that could stop the bleeding.

It was past 2 p.m. when the elderly man was taken to the hospital and his wound was bandaged.

The sunlight outside the window was intense, casting dappled shadows on the floor as it refracted through the window.

The elderly woman, surnamed Li, with a bandage wrapped around her head, was holding her hand and thanking her profusely.

"Child, thank you so much. When my grandson comes over later, I'll definitely have him thank you properly!"

"No need, no need, it was just a small favor."

Li Tangyan wanted to wave her hand again, but found that the old lady's hand was tightly gripping hers.

After saying that, he patted her hand twice more, looking very serious: "Yes, I want it!"

As they were speaking, hurried footsteps approached, and the door to the ward was pulled open from the outside.

"grandmother--"

Under the warm light, Li Tangyan looked in the direction of the sound.

The person who arrived was dressed in a white shirt and casual pants, with somewhat messy hair, as if he had rushed over without having time to tidy himself up after hearing the news.

But when her gaze fell on that person's face, her brows furrowed involuntarily.

It's Lu Chuan.

Lu Chuan was clearly surprised to run into him here, and his expression froze for a moment.

Grandma Li, standing to the side, didn't notice anything amiss.

He waved to Lu Chuan and beckoned him over: "Xiao Chuan, this is Xiao Li who brought me to the hospital. You'd better thank her properly later."

As she spoke, Grandma Li turned to look at Li Tangyan, her face beaming with a kind smile: "This is my grandson, Lu Chuan."

"By the way, Xiao Chuan also works in Z City. If you ever have any difficulties in the future, you can ask him for help. He's shy and not very good at talking, but he has a kind heart."

“…”

Li Tangyan was silent for a few seconds. The moment their eyes met in the air, they decisively and tacitly looked away.

Although she wouldn't directly mention the good deeds Lu Chuan had done in front of the old man.

But the moment Li Tangyan saw him, she immediately lost all desire to stay any longer.

She gathered her belongings, made up a casual excuse to Grandma Li, and left.

The hospital corridor still smelled faintly of disinfectant.

Li Tangyan walked ahead, while Lu Chuan stayed a few steps behind her.

The two maintained this strange atmosphere until Li Tangyan left the hospital.

"We've gone far enough in this charade, why are you still following me?"

Within sight, a corner of Li Tangyan's long dress was blown up by the wind. She frowned, her hand gripping the strap of her bag in front of her, her face showing undisguised vigilance.

Upon hearing this, Lu Chuan lowered his hands from behind his head and scoffed.

Then, with a long stride, he walked up to Li Tangyan.

Meeting Li Tangyan's scrutinizing gaze, he remained silent for two seconds, then, as if somewhat irritated, raised his hand and ruffled the hair at the back of his head haphazardly.

A fleeting hint of annoyance in his eyes seemed somewhat incongruous with his less-than-friendly attitude: "My grandmother's matter..."

Thanks.

Lu Chuan probably rarely says these things, so his words of thanks sounded a little stiff the moment they came out.

Li Tangyan silently glanced at him for a couple of seconds, her probing gaze landing on Lu Chuan's face, making him feel very uncomfortable.

Finally, just when he was about to break down, Li Tangyan looked away.

She took a step back, curled her lips into a smile, and said with a hint of mockery, "No need. I'll just consider it doing a good deed every day and accumulating some merit for myself."

"So that I won't get chased and beaten up again next time."

“…”

Having said that, Li Tangyan figured he wouldn't want to keep following her and make things difficult, so she left Lu Chuan behind and walked on.

However, after taking only a couple of steps, she seemed to remember something and turned back.

A hint of doubt flashed across Lu Chuan's face as he watched the person who had left and then returned.

However, before he could speak, Li Tangyan took a step forward first.

Her voice was soft and gentle, yet it held a hidden meaning that mingled with the chilling wind of late autumn: "Here's some advice for you."

"Don't be loyal to someone blindly."

"A man like Zhou Yong isn't worth it..."

*

It wasn't until she boarded the bus back that Li Tangyan realized how fresh the air was without Lu Chuan following behind her.
