Chapter 53 You've really grown some guts.

As night deepened, the leaves that had spilled out of the window rustled softly in the night breeze.

Inside the office, soft lighting illuminated the entire room.

At the desk, the two were working on their own tasks with their heads down. Apart from the occasional click of the mouse, the only other sounds were the turning of papers and the soft rustling of pens.

Li Tangyan lowered her head, and a few stray hairs fell from the side of her face onto the back of her hand, fluttering in the air as she turned the page.

At 10 p.m., the occasional noise outside had subsided into silence.

Li Tangyan closed the last file, as if the long silence had made her briefly forget that there was someone on the other side.

She stretched and yawned, and as she raised her arms, the hem of her dress rode up, revealing a small section of her fair skin at her waist.

When I lowered my hand again, I looked up and met those dark eyes.

Her upturned lips froze instantly, and she quickly withdrew her hands back to her knees, adopting a belatedly obedient posture: "I'm sorry."

"It's nothing." Wen Zhaonian looked away, his voice devoid of emotion.

I was busy with something just now, so it's not a big deal and I won't worry too much.

But now that the atmosphere has returned to silence, Li Tangyan, whose hands are now idle, has become somewhat reserved.

She tugged at her clothes for a while, her gaze occasionally glancing at Wen Zhaonian.

"that..."

"You had a good meal tonight, didn't you?"

Just as she had finally composed herself and was about to speak, she was startled by Wen Zhaonian's question, which rang out at the same time.

Li Tangyan responded with a sound of surprise, not quite understanding.

However, just as she was about to say something, she saw him purse his lips, then turn off the computer, stand up, and glance at her.

Her words left her somewhat confused.

"Never mind, I'll take you home."

The night was hazy, and the black car looked as if it were shrouded in a thin veil under the streetlights.

Li Tangyan glanced at the familiar buildings outside, then unbuckled her seatbelt and prepared to get out of the car.

Before she got out of the car, she heard Wen Zhaonian's voice from the driver's seat: "I'm going to S City with Pan Le tomorrow, and it will probably be about a week before we come back."

A week?

It's about time for her to return to the newspaper office.

Li Tangyan paused for a moment while resting her hand on the car door, but quickly resumed normal motion.

She turned to look at Wen Zhaonian, a slight grin spreading across her face. To Wen Zhaonian, the smile seemed somewhat carefree: "Then I wish you a safe journey."

After she finished speaking, she paused again, as if she had remembered something.

Her smile deepened, making it difficult to discern her true emotions: "Also, don't forget about the interview when you get back; you promised me."

“…”

As soon as Li Tangyan finished speaking, Wen Zhaonian's narrow eyes narrowed slightly, and his clear voice, for some reason, gave off a chill the moment it came out.

Is that all you wanted to tell me?

Li Tangyan blinked, somewhat puzzled.

After a long pause, seeing Wen Zhaonian's increasingly somber expression, she added somewhat uncertainly, "So... did you have fun?"

clatter--

In the quiet atmosphere, the soft cracking sound, like knuckles after applying force, seemed abrupt and obvious.

Li Tangyan glanced at the small marks left on the steering wheel where her fingertips had rested, and unconsciously swallowed.

For some inexplicable reason, a sense of relief arose in his mind that thankfully he wasn't pressing on his own head.

"Forehead…"

Li Tangyan wanted to say something more, but Wen Zhaonian on the other end seemed afraid of hearing any more unpleasant things from her.

After a soft click, his slightly deeper voice slowly came through.

Wen Zhaonian looked at Li Tangyan, his dark eyes filled with a turbulent light, as if waves were about to rise.

"Chestnut porridge".

"You've really gotten to know yourself."

Even after Wen Zhaonian's car completely disappeared from sight, Li Tangyan's mind was still filled with his last two sentences.

She tilted her head, somewhat puzzled as to where Wen Zhaonian's sudden displeasure came from.

Without thinking much about it, just as he was about to go back, he turned around and saw Yao Qing standing a few steps away from him.

She laughed, a teasing look on her face: "What were you two talking about? I've seen Wen Zhaonian's car parked here for ages."

As she spoke, Yao Qing's expression of watching the show became more and more obvious. When she stood in front of Li Tangyan, she even pretended to move closer.

He deliberately lowered his voice: "It wasn't...hehehehehehe, was it?"

Yao Qing didn't explain herself clearly, but her strange tone and the gossip on her face made it easy for Li Tangyan to understand what she meant.

He immediately laughed and scolded, "Can't you think of something nice?"

After she finished speaking, Yao Qing stopped smiling.

He rested his chin on his hand and nodded with a serious expression.

Before Li Tangyan could even praise her for finally being more normal, she saw her lips curl into a smile.

When he spoke again, his smile, which had returned, now had a hint of smugness: "Yeah, hehehehe, the time would be too short."

"This is not the kind of strength that Zhao Ge from University A should have."

“…”

*

Just as he said that night, Wen Zhaonian's trip to S City lasted a week.

In early April, Z city had shed much of the chill it felt when we first returned; a cool breeze was blowing, and the air was filled with the scent of spring.

Wen Zhaonian and the others will be back this afternoon.

Early in the morning, Li Tangyan thought about how she should return to the newspaper the day after tomorrow, so she decided to organize the remaining things in her hands and finish what she started.

They didn't seem to have any intention of picking him up at the airport.
