Chapter 18 The Uninvited Guest

A summer breeze blew by, and the fallen leaves in the distance floated in the air for who knows how long before finally landing on the windowsill outside.

The room, devoid of deliberate conversation, was now filled only with the occasional lazy chirping of Yuanxiao (a type of glutinous rice ball) and the curious sounds of birds perched by the window, peering into the room.

Ding-dong—

Suddenly, the doorbell rang outside, and birdsong began outside the window. The birds that had been resting seemed startled and took flight.

Li Tangyan was closer to the entrance, so she put down the glutinous rice balls and headed straight for the main gate.

"Surprise~"

The moment the door opened, the enticing scent of a woman wafted in.

Outside, a woman was wearing a bodycon skirt with a white shirt tied around her waist.

The top button was loosely undone, revealing a small patch of fair skin underneath. Her oval face had red lips and white teeth, making her a true beauty.

Li Tangyan narrowed her eyes slightly and recognized the person in front of her.

Cen Ruan—Wen Zhaonian's client handling his own cases.

Cen Ruan also recognized Li Tangyan.

However, the surprise in her eyes was only hidden for a moment. After giving a casual greeting, she stepped past Li Tangyan and walked in.

As he entered the living room, his gaze swept around the room, his intention quite clear: "Where is Attorney Wen?"

"What are you doing here?" When Wen Zhaonian saw Cen Ruan after coming out of the dining room, his brows furrowed, and his usually cold face appeared somewhat distant.

Cen Ruan, however, did not seem to care much about this.

She walked slowly to Wen Zhaonian, her sweet scent emanating from her growing stronger: "I heard from the law firm that you didn't come today, and we couldn't get through to you on the phone."

"So as a neighbor, I definitely had to come and offer my condolences!"

After she finished speaking, she raised her hand to put it on his shoulder, but Wen Zhaonian dodged it with a slight movement.

Cen Ruan was not annoyed by this. Her gaze fell on the dining room where he had just come out, and then she looked at Li Tangyan, who had also walked over after closing the door.

With a raised eyebrow and an unceremonious demand, Li Tangyan momentarily felt like she had become the family's waiter.

“I haven’t eaten breakfast either, could you get me a bowl? I also have some matters to discuss with Attorney Wen regarding an inheritance dispute.”

As soon as Cen Ruan finished speaking, Wen Zhaonian's clear black and white eyes turned dark, clearly showing his impatience with Cen Ruan's overly self-assured attitude.

Meanwhile, Li Tangyan, who was involved in the incident, lifted her eyelids slightly.

He tilted his head and glanced at Cen Ruan: "Sure, Alipay or WeChat?"

"?"

A soft chuckle escaped from his throat in an instant.

Like a docile cat suddenly revealing its claws, a hint of coldness appeared in her eyes, which had previously been smiling: "What, you have to pay for delivery when you order takeout? Besides, the porridge he drank was cooked by me."

"I never said I was treating you. It's all clearly priced; you have to pay if you want to eat."

The final sentence was soft and slow, and in an instant, Cen Ruan felt as if several fine needles had been pierced straight into her heart.

Her breasts heaved with each rapid breath; her face flushed with anger, and her voice took on an uncontrollable shrillness: "You—"

*Pfft*

Like a needle falling to the ground, a soft, muted laugh suddenly broke the frozen silence.

Wen Zhaonian squatted down, his arched back making his clothes cling to his back, creating a strong curve.

With a languid expression, he lightly scratched Yuanxiao's chin with his long, slender fingers.

Yuanxiao meowed.

The blue eyes moved, and the next second, the furry paws slapped his hand without any hesitation.

Although it didn't dodge, its tail swayed back and forth, and its aloof and indifferent demeanor was just like its owner, very noble.

Wen Zhaonian picked up Yuanxiao, then walked over to Li Tangyan, raised an eyebrow, and before she could react, placed the fluffy ball into her arms.

The moment she bent down, a shadow instantly loomed over her from above.

The man leaned forward slightly, and then his pale lips moved, his voice slightly hoarse.

"If it includes meals..."

Can I pay monthly?

"!"

The heat lingered around her ears, and as it dissipated, Li Tangyan felt a buzzing sound, which instantly threw her thoughts into disarray.

Under his gaze, Wen Zhaonian's dark eyes seemed to be filled with a dangerous vortex, capable of instantly dragging the person in his eyes to the bottom of the lake.

At the same time, the glutinous rice ball in her arms stirred, its tail darting out from her embrace and brushing against her fingertips, sending a sharp, ticklish sensation through her.

Hearing the teasing in his words, Li Tangyan blushed, clenched her palms, and cursed inwardly for cheating as she looked at the person in front of her.

"Take a look for me."

However, before she could say anything, Wen Zhaonian had already turned around, and when he looked at Cen Ruan again, his expression had become much calmer.

"Weren't we supposed to be discussing the case? Let's go."

*

The study door was ajar and not locked.

So in the ten minutes that he was inside, Wen Zhaonian could see someone occasionally leaning out through the small crack in the door, trying to peek inside and observe what was happening.

Suddenly, a cry of pain rang out.

Within sight, the person who was originally holding the cat and sinking into the soft sofa slipped because of the act of leaning half of their body out, and in the next second they had already flipped over like a roly-poly toy.

Yuanxiao jumped out of Li Tangyan's arms the moment she landed.

As it moved, a wisp of white fluff floated in the air for a few seconds before finally landing on the tip of the girl's nose.

Before she could even sit up, the girl had already curled up and sneezed.

When she sat up again, her nose was slightly red, and her eyes were unconsciously misty with tears.

The pen in his hand had somehow spun around in his palm along his slender fingers before finally landing on the table with a soft sound.

The person, who had been feeling drowsy after taking fever-reducing medication, now lifted their eyelids slightly.

His gaze fell on that person, and he was momentarily stunned.

"I heard that you and Zheng Chuanyi are working on Zhou Yong's case."

As the sweet, cloying female voice rang out, everything in sight was replaced by the woman's figure, magnified by her leaning posture.

Cen Ruan placed her hands on the table, her limp body leaning forward again.

As he turned his head, the warm breath and suggestive words reached his ears: "I was there the day Zhou Yong ordered someone to plot against that kid. If you're willing, I can come out and be a witness."

"But Ah Zhao, what do you plan to do to repay me?"

Seeing that Wen Zhaonian did not dodge, Cen Ruan chuckled and her gaze, like a hook, fell nakedly on him.
