As night deepened, the full moon disappeared into the clouds in an instant.
The people on the basketball court gradually left, and the noise subsided, replaced by the chirping of cicadas.
Li Tangyan folded the remaining wrapping paper into a square and put it into the extra bag.
She rested her chin on her hand, glanced at the nearly empty stadium in front of her, and suddenly tilted her head to the side.
With expectant eyes, he asked, "Hey, can you teach me how to play basketball next time?"
At that time, Wen Zhaonian was standing a few steps away from her.
He pulled his rolled-up sleeves down again, and the streetlights cast his shadow long and thin.
Her expression calmed down, and she seemed to have regained her usual aloof and dignified demeanor.
He tilted his head, mimicking Li Tangyan's gesture, and chuckled softly, "You're quite the impolite one."
Upon hearing this, Li Tangyan simply propped herself up on her knees, dusted herself off, and ran over to him.
With her head tilted slightly back and her long dress fluttering in the wind, her voice was slow and gentle.
It was as if each word was being struck firmly on someone's heartstrings: "You can't pursue me by being polite, otherwise you'll forget me very quickly once the case is over."
From the moment they met, Wen Zhaonian knew that Li Tangyan had always laid out her feelings very clearly.
She wasn't afraid of being known, but this was the first time Wen Zhaonian had heard her speak so bluntly.
Like a pebble rolling into water, it may not make a loud noise, but it's enough to create ripples.
Wen Zhaonian stood still and quietly looked at Li Tangyan for a few moments. He noticed that her eyes remained clear, but her expression showed a rare stubbornness.
The light from the streetlights was slightly soft, enveloping the two people's shadows in a circle.
Looking at each other from opposite sides adds a touch of unreality.
It was impossible to tell whose heart was racing, but then it quietly disappeared into the chirping of cicadas.
After an unknown amount of time, Wen Zhaonian's long eyelashes finally moved, and a shadow instantly fell over his eyes.
Then he turned around and took a step to create distance between them.
Before Li Tangyan could react, the expression on her face, along with the strange look on her ears, was completely hidden in the dim night, away from the light.
Under the cover of night, behind the man who had slowed his pace at some point, a girl in a long dress fluttered.
While deliberately maintaining a distance of two or three meters, it was like a playful child who had found fun, taking two steps and then jumping, hiding itself in the shadow of the precise stepping of the toes when landing.
Her eyes curved like a pair of crescent moons, and the affection in them shone brightly like stars that could not be hidden.
*
Li Tangyan ultimately did not receive a definite answer from him, but she was not rejected either.
So for her, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
On the other side, when Wen Zhaonian arrived home, he saw Zheng Chuan sitting cross-legged on the ground, already familiar with the process of turning on the TV and watching the game.
As for the sofa next to him, Yuanxiao was curled up and casually occupied the middle position. When he heard the noise, he just lazily lifted his eyelids and looked towards the door.
Then, the little head tilted to the side, creating a striking contrast between the person and the cat.
"Oh, our Brother Zhao has eloped back?" Zheng Chuan pressed the pause button, propped his chin on his hand, turned to look at him, his dimples shallow, and his words were tinged with laughter.
Wen Zhaonian glanced at the several bottles of still-cold beer and a plate of sunflower seeds that he had been munching on for who knows how long, and chuckled softly.
Then, with a flick of his wrist, the jacket arced gracefully through the air before landing precisely on Zheng Chuanyi's forehead, the hem of the jacket sliding down to obscure the man's grinning expression.
"Aren't you going to come back and take over my place?"
Wen Zhaonian ignored Zheng Chuan's subsequent complaints, went back to the room to get his clothes, and went straight to the bathroom: "If the trash on the table isn't cleaned up by the time I come out, don't blame me for changing the password here tomorrow."
"What happened to the revolutionary friendship we shared during our four years of university?"
"It was eaten by a dog."
"..."
When Wen Zhaonian came out again, the extra things on the table had been removed and replaced by a laptop and a stack of documents.
He changed into a black loungewear set with a wide neckline that revealed a small section of his collarbone.
The sleeves were short, just above the elbows, completely revealing everything that had been hidden under the shirt. Her skin was fair, appearing even more pale and cold in the light.
His slender fingers rested on the mouse beside him, and with a slight movement, they landed on the surveillance video that he had copied from Zhang Daren earlier.
Zheng Chuan was flipping through the documents in his hand when suddenly, the sound of raindrops falling rapidly against the window reminded him of something.
"Oh, by the way, Shao Huan called this afternoon and said she couldn't get through to you, so she asked me to apologize to you."
"What, did you two get into a fight?"
Outside the French windows, the rain poured down as if it had been holding back for days. Once it started, it showed no signs of stopping. A muffled clap of thunder sounded, and light shone in, making the room even brighter.
Wen Zhaonian stopped moving the mouse at some point, and his gaze on the screen seemed unfocused.
His eyes were deep and thoughtful. As another muffled thunderclap sounded, Shao Huan's voice seemed to rush into his mind as well.
Someone as naturally gifted as you could never understand how much effort I put into every step I took.
It was a low growl that had lost its temper, filled with resentment, like tasting an unripe fruit, with a bitter and sour taste.
As he regained consciousness, a hint of coldness returned to Wen Zhaonian's eyes. He clicked his tongue lightly, and his expression became somewhat mocking.
The heavy rain outside the window hadn't stopped, and the wind was howling. A slightly deep voice, sounding somewhat sinister and cold, said, "You're not a child anymore. If you're still so inconsiderate, you might as well go back to school and start over."
