"There are countless handsome men out there. If you don't date one of them, you'll be doing yourself a disservice by coming into this world."
"Not to mention someone like Wen Zhaonian, he's the most popular."
If Li Tangyan had known beforehand that Wen Zhaonian would hear her strange and exaggerated words spoken in a moment of momentary arrogance, she would never have acted so cheekily.
Following Zheng Chuan's intrigued gaze, one could see that the office door, which had been slightly ajar, had been opened at some point, and the protagonist of their conversation was now standing there motionless.
"I--"
Li Tangyan slightly parted her lips, frantically searching her mind for words to use to defend herself—or rather, to explain her current predicament—while Zheng Chuanyi, sitting between the two as a chief spectator, was enjoying the spectacle even more.
He pointed at Li Tangyan and said to Wen Zhaonian, his dimples appearing on his cheeks as he smiled: "Zhao, this little girl says you're the ancestor of fox spirits, you owe—"
The deliberate pause at the end leaves the reader with a sense of ambiguity and endless possibilities.
A warm breeze blew in through the half-open window, turning a page of the document on the desk.
Despite the unbearably hot weather, a chill ran down my spine from the casual glance of those dark eyes.
...Go to hell with this upside-down nonsense.
When did I ever say such a thing?
Li Tangyan blushed, not daring to look at Wen Zhaonian's expression at that moment, and instead looked at Zheng Chuanyi with increasing resentment.
Zheng Chuan seemed to understand the meaning conveyed by her piercing gaze, and his smile deepened: "The words are crude, but the reasoning is flawed..."
However, before Zheng Chuanyi could finish speaking, his assistant's voice came from outside: "Attorney Zheng, the client has arrived."
Zheng Chuan responded, then stopped talking and started walking outside.
With that serious demeanor, if it weren't for that seemingly meaningful, cheeky pat on Wen Zhaonian's shoulder as he passed by, Li Tangyan would have thought that the person who had just been spouting nonsense wasn't him at all.
After Zheng Chuan left, the office, which wasn't small, now felt so cramped to Li Tangyan that it made her sweat profusely.
Not to mention that Wen Zhaonian, who was originally standing outside the door, was slowly walking towards her.
Despite the hot weather, Wen Zhaonian's tie remained perfectly still, without a trace of being pulled, clinging to his shirt. Not only was the top button on his shirt fastened, but even the buttons on his sleeves were fastened without a single gap, making it impossible to even peek inside.
Sometimes, the more ascetic a person is, the more people want to take them off when they're dressed, rather than when they're not.
The moment the phrase that her friend used to always say popped into Li Tangyan's mind, the little devil that was still wagging its tail in her heart was suddenly pierced by the angel of justice and sent flying into the sky.
She shook her head and muttered the phrase "form is emptiness" to herself in an attempt to calm down, as if trying to bury her head in the sand.
However, this unnecessary illusion ultimately crumbled when the two were only a few meters apart.
Wen Zhaonian was so tall that when he stood in front of me, he blocked most of the light coming in from the window.
As he bent over, the fresh, clean scent of soap wafted into his nostrils.
Li Tangyan tried to step back, but the table behind her blocked her movement.
She braced her hands on the table behind her, facing the approaching face.
Finally, he closed his eyes and turned his head to the side: "Don't be impulsive. Even if I really had the guts, we have to consider the occasion. Stay calm. This can't be broadcast live!"
Li Tangyan tightened her grip, unintentionally knocking some fine wood shavings from under the wooden tabletop.
Remembering the surveillance camera hanging above and to their left, they became so nervous that they blurted out something without even thinking.
As she moved, her fair neck was exposed to Wen Zhaonian's eyes, with even the thin blue veins on it faintly visible.
"..." Wen Zhaonian looked at the person in front of him who barely reached his shoulder, his eyes were dark, as if they contained a deep spring, unfathomable.
He raised his hand, and the sunlight falling on it gave it a slightly cold, white feel.
Finally, a hand with distinct knuckles landed on her left shoulder, and then pulled her to the side. Li Tangyan was "moved" out of the narrow circle that had been filled with an eerie and ambiguous atmosphere just a second before, in a daze.
She opened her eyes and saw that the documents she had been hiding behind her had been picked up by Wen Zhaonian: "Excuse me, I forgot to take something."
"..."
Oh dear, it was a huge misunderstanding.
Li Tangyan touched her nose, and an unnatural red flush appeared on the tip of her ear.
On the other side, Wen Zhaonian, who had taken the lost documents, seemed oblivious to the changes that had occurred and turned to leave.
As he moved, the shadow that had been looming over him faded away, and warm light once again shone brightly on the spot where he had been standing. The cramped space that had initially felt so confined instantly became bright again.
Li Tangyan was stunned for a moment, and after she came to her senses, she immediately chased after him: "You're just leaving like that?"
Wen Zhaonian paused and raised his eyes.
His voice was slightly hoarse, like a hook dropped into water; the slightest movement would create ripples on the calm surface of a lake: "Otherwise, shall we continue our discussion about how you plan to take someone home to make up for your time on earth?"
"..."
Even after getting into the car, Li Tangyan ultimately didn't dare to actually fulfill Wen Zhaonian's words.
It wasn't that she was cowardly, but she was afraid that she would lose control and "talk nonsense" again, and that Wen Zhaonian would just grab her by the back of the neck and throw her off the second floor of the firm.
If you fail to win someone's heart and end up with a sign that says "Dogs and Chestnuts, Keep Out" on your head, that wouldn't be worth it.
Her acquaintance with Wen Zhaonian was quite dramatic.
