Chapter 52: Read and Run

My heart was pounding, as if it were being pulled up high by something.

However, this eye contact lasted only a few seconds before Wen Zhaonian looked away, his expression indifferent and nonchalant.

In an instant, my heart, which had been hanging in suspense, felt as if the transparent rope that had been hanging there had been cut.

With a bang, it sank again.

Li Tangyan lowered her eyes, her long, dark eyelashes concealing the thoughts in them.

Amidst the cacophony of voices, the low whisper quickly faded away: "That's not how it works."

Wen Zhaonian didn't plan to participate in their next round of plans after finishing his meal because he had to go back to his office.

Just as he was about to leave, Pan Le caught up from behind: "Ah Zhao, are you going back to the law firm? I'll go with you."

However, Wen Zhaonian shook his head, his expression not changing much: "No need, it won't take much time."

Upon hearing this, Pan Le wanted to say something, but Zheng Chuan interrupted him.

Whether intentional or not, Zheng Chuanyi had already stepped between the two of them as they spoke, becoming a "barrier" separating them.

"Yes, I just got back from a business trip. I need to get a good night's rest and recharge my energy."

"Can..."

Before Pan Le could finish speaking, Wen Zhaonian on the other end exchanged a glance with Zheng Chuanyi and then left without lingering.

The departing figure grew increasingly blurry in his vision, and Pan Le's words, which had been stuck in his throat, were ultimately left unsaid.

After driving his car out of the parking lot, Wen Zhaonian originally planned to drive straight back to the law firm.

But unexpectedly, as he turned the corner, his gaze fell directly on a familiar figure in the coffee shop next door.

squeak--

The sudden braking sound wasn't very noticeable on the busy street.

Wen Zhaonian looked at Li Tangyan on the other end and the person sitting opposite her.

In an instant, a dangerous emotion seemed to surge in his dark eyes.

On the other side, Li Tangyan listened to Zhao Ju's words. Even though she was prepared, she still felt as if a huge rock was pressing on her heart, making her feel suffocated.

Li Dahai and Wu Chang's marriage, which was constantly arguing over various issues, was finally going to end up in court.

The family relatives felt that it was shameful for them to go through with divorce at their age, so they wanted Zhao Ju to come over again to give Li Tangyan some psychological counseling.

Let her go back and try to persuade the two of them again.

Zhao Juyi always treated her like a younger sister, and the two had a good relationship. So, Li Tangyan didn't want to get involved in Li Dahai and his family's mess anymore.

However, he didn't say anything too definitive to Zhao Ju.

She simply shook her head, then whispered, "I don't want to go back."

Upon hearing this, Zhao Ju simply glanced at her, as if he had seen through Li Tangyan's thoughts.

He then raised his hand and patted Li Tangyan's head, saying nothing more: "Okay, if you don't want to go back, then we won't go back."

"I'm on your side, bro."

Li Tangyan raised her eyes and looked at Zhao Ju. Her eyelashes trembled, and for some reason, her eyes began to sting.

When she spoke again, her voice was somewhat muffled: "Thank you."

"Don't mention it," Zhao Ju said with a smile.

Then, as if remembering something, she glanced at her watch and asked again, "I almost forgot, my mom asked me to bring you some things, they're still at home. Do you want to come back with me to get them, or should I bring them to you another day?"

Li Tangyan thought for a moment, and was about to speak when her phone, which was placed to the side, suddenly lit up.

She took it and saw that it contained only a message that Wen Zhaonian had just sent.

[Back to work overtime.]

Weren't they at a party?

Upon seeing this, Li Tangyan unconsciously furrowed her brows, and the soreness in her nose instantly subsided considerably.

Zhao Ju noticed her distracted state and asked curiously, "What's wrong?"

Li Tangyan shook her head, then said, "It's nothing, I just remembered I have something to do, so I probably can't go with you to get it."

As he spoke, a hint of apology appeared on his face.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Ju simply waved his hand, his smile widening: "It's alright, I'll give it to you next time I'm on my way."

*

When Li Tangyan returned to the law firm, the lights in Wen Zhaonian's office were already on.

The moment she knocked on the door and went in, I wondered if it was just my imagination.

When Wen Zhaonian looked over with his clear and sharp gaze, Li Tangyan felt as if the air around her had frozen, making her want to back away.

Thinking of this, Li Tangyan subconsciously took a step back.

However, the moment this scene came into his view, Li Tangyan heard Wen Zhaonian click his tongue very softly.

Along with this came a grainy voice that, when lowered, created a sense of oppression: "Am I a ghost? Run away if you see me."

For some reason, Li Tangyan actually detected a hint of grievance in his voice.

However, given Wen Zhaonian's cold face, the idea was quickly dismissed from her mind before it even had a chance to linger for more than a few seconds.

She gave a dry laugh, then pretended not to notice the sarcasm in Wen Zhaonian's words and slowly walked over: "How could that be?"

Her intuition told her that Wen Zhaonian wasn't in a good mood tonight, so it was best to avoid provoking him.

So once I stopped, I didn't dwell on what he had that required him to call me back so late at night.

He asked directly, "Is there anything I can help you with?"

Under the lamplight, Li Tangyan's facial features appeared even more gentle.

Her round, almond-shaped eyes curved slightly, and her smile revealed a few neat rabbit teeth.

Wearing white today made her look more harmless and docile.
