Chapter 142 Fortune Lies in Peril (shuhaige.net)

Zu An looked in the direction of the sound. The valley was originally shrouded in a gray haze, and nothing could be seen before, but now some figures could be vaguely seen.

As the footsteps drew closer, the figures became increasingly clear.

Rows of zombies emerged neatly from the mist and stopped dozens of meters away. These zombies were completely different from the ones before. They were much cleaner, without any half-rotten flesh hanging on their bodies, and without tattered clothes. Instead, they were all wearing armor-like uniforms, holding spears and swords, and the front row even held shields!

"Holy crap, elite monsters!" Zaun's eyes widened. If the previous zombies gave people the feeling of refugees, then these newly appeared zombies were warriors, no, it would be more appropriate to describe them as an army.

Do zombies have armies?

Zuan was stunned; all of this was beyond his comprehension.

He was already having a hard time dealing with the previous group of refugees; if he were to face a regular army now, he would definitely be killed.

Just as Zuan was feeling somewhat desperate, he suddenly noticed something unusual below. The zombies below him had picked up weapons and were looking at the distant army with wary expressions. No matter how you looked at it, the two sides didn't seem to be on the same side.

At this moment, a small opening suddenly appeared in the distant army, and a troop of cavalry slowly walked out. Although they were called cavalry, the horses they rode were definitely not alive; they looked like zombie horses, with black mist swirling around their bodies. Each of them looked like the Ringwraiths seen in movies from my previous life.

The knights wore armor that was far superior to that of the surrounding infantry. The knight at the front had armor that was clearly different in color and shape from his companions, making him obviously a leader.

It was draped in a black cloak, its entire body seemingly shrouded in a layer of black mist, obscuring its face. Only two blue flames peeked out from its helmet, which must have been its eyes.

As soon as it drew its long sword, the soldiers seemed to receive a signal and drew their weapons, thrusting their spears forward.

The knight leader pulled on the reins, and his "steed" almost stood upright. He pressed his sword down, and his cavalry charged forward. Then, the infantry also brandished their weapons and began to charge.

"What's going on? Zombies fighting each other?" Zaun's eyes widened in disbelief. The world is truly full of wonders.

I thought the zombies here would turn and run away, after all, judging from their equipment and their aura, the two sides were not on the same level at all. But to my surprise, these guys were not afraid at all, but were even more excited. They roared and howled - although I couldn't hear them, I could feel the roars from their open mouths. They waved their crude weapons and charged towards the enemy.

Zu'an suddenly realized something. Looking at the situation, it seemed so much like a battle between peasant rebels and the regular army of the imperial court.

Just then, the sky suddenly darkened. Zu'an looked up and saw a dense barrage of arrows shooting from behind the army like a storm.

Compared to that, the arrows Zaun faced before were probably nothing.

Arrows rained down, and a small group of peasant soldiers fell instantly, pinned to the ground and unable to rise again.

Zuan carefully examined the bows and arrows, thinking that he had been slashing at a zombie for a long time with his sword and still might not have been able to kill it, but he had killed them all with a single arrow.

Was it that the army's archers were too powerful, or was there some special magic in the bows and arrows?

In that instant, the zombies on both sides collided. The cavalry's charge was too powerful, and these peasant zombies with makeshift weapons couldn't stop them at all. Their formation was cut in half almost instantly by the cavalry.

The infantrymen following closely behind brandished their weapons, and the zombies at the forefront of the peasant army fell one after another in almost a single encounter.

"It's a one-sided massacre!" Zuan's mouth went dry. The zombies that had just cornered him were now powerless to resist.

Although they were clearly very brave, using their numerical advantage to attack the enemy desperately, and some even biting their opponents with their mouths after having half their bodies cut off, the difference in individual strength and equipment between the two sides was simply too great.

It's unclear how much time passed, but there wasn't a single living person left on the peasant army's side—no, not a single corpse was still standing. Scattered fragments were everywhere on the ground.

The knight leader rode his horse slowly across the battlefield, finally stopping under the large tree where Zaun was.

Zuan held his breath, afraid of making the slightest noise that would alert them. The previous group had already given him a near-death experience, and this new one would surely make him die a hundred times over.

Fortunately, he was halfway up a cliff, and the undead knight didn't look up.

In addition, the group of zombies had just devoured a lot of golden-haired monster rats, and their bodies were filled with the scent of flesh and blood. Otherwise, with such a strong human presence, even if he stayed up there, he certainly wouldn't have been able to hide it from so many zombies below.

After surveying the battlefield, the undead knight crushed some of the zombies still crawling on the ground with a single stomp. Once he confirmed that there were no survivors, the undead knight waved his hand, and a sharp metallic clanging sound rang out. All the soldiers re-formed their ranks, then turned and marched in orderly steps into the depths of the valley.

"They even sounded the retreat!" Zu'an's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. These zombie armies were pretty professional.

After the army had gone far away, Zu An jumped down from the tree. Looking at the severed limbs and hands scattered all over the mountainside, his face twitched involuntarily. He thought to himself that if Ji Xiaoxi were here, she would probably vomit again.
