Chapter 507 On the Verge of Death

“Mount Gouwu is rich in jade on its upper part and copper at its lower part. There is a beast there, which looks like a sheep with a human face, with eyes under its armpits, tiger teeth and human claws, and its cry is like that of an infant. It is called Paoxiao and it eats people.”

This is a record from the ancient Chinese classic "Classic of Mountains and Seas," and it looks exactly like the monster shown below.

The roe owl also has a more well-known name: Taotie!

What kind of luck do I have? First, I encountered a bunch of strange snakes, and then I ran into an ancient ferocious beast. I'm just incredibly unlucky.

Hmm, according to the law of conservation of luck, wouldn't I be able to win some really amazing items in the lottery if I draw one now?

Of course, this was just a thought; he wouldn't dare to be distracted by the lottery right now.

Pei Mianman tightened her grip on his hand, clearly terrified of what was below her; people are always like that when faced with the unknown.

"Do you think it might discover us?" Pei Mianman, now slightly recovered, used her spiritual energy to ask Zu An, clearly worried that even the slightest sound might be heard by the monster.

Zuan was also somewhat uncertain: "It shouldn't be that unlucky, right?"

As soon as he finished speaking, he wanted to slap himself. He had been in this world for so long that his vigilance had decreased, and he was making random predictions.

Fortunately, the Taotie did not look up at the two of them, but continued to search for the strange snakes among the bones.

Each time its tongue shot out, the skulls were shattered, and then it pulled out several strange snakes from within to feast on.

Zu An thought to himself, no wonder he had seen so many broken bones before. They didn't look like they were caused by weapons. He thought they had been weathered over time. He never expected them to be byproducts of this guy's eating.

At the same time, he secretly despised those strange snakes, who didn't even know how to resist. He should have just attacked them. Even ants can kill an elephant if there are enough of them!

They just attacked us hard, but now they're all cowering when they see someone tough?

Despite his complaints, he secretly reminded Pei Mianman, "Now is a good opportunity. Let's go out through that passage while it's eating."

He was actually somewhat relieved. If the gluttonous monster hadn't appeared, the two of them would probably have been driven to their deaths by these strange snakes. Now, not only was the threat of the snakes gone, but they didn't even need to look for a way out. The only thing they needed to be careful about was not being discovered by the gluttonous beast.

It seems that guy is enjoying his meal over there and is clearly unaware of the two people's presence.

Pei Mianman nodded, a hint of joy appearing in her eyes. She didn't want to stay in this awful place for even a second longer.

The two quietly moved toward the cave entrance not far away. Just as they had predicted, the cave entrance was near where they had fallen, about five or six meters from the bottom of the pit.

This height is difficult for ordinary people to climb, and the wall has been specially treated, so once someone falls, even a cultivator would have a hard time getting back up and naturally wouldn't be able to discover the secret.

Zaun used the Tai'a sword and the Death Dagger to climb and move along the wall, eventually reaching the cave entrance.

There was still some viscous liquid left in the mouth of the Taotie at the entrance of the cave, and it felt extremely disgusting to step on it. There seemed to be a lot more inside the passage.

However, looking at the upward-sloping road, the joy of about to escape made the two no longer care about their surroundings.

Pei Mianman smiled, pondering what to say to him. After all, she had only kissed him so boldly because she thought she was going to die. Now that she had escaped, she felt a little embarrassed when she thought about it. Although he and Chu Yan were divorced, she still felt a little ashamed for stealing her best friend's man.

Just then, a flower of blood suddenly bloomed on her shoulder. The smile on her face froze instantly, and she looked down in astonishment to find a hideous tongue piercing through her body.

Without giving her a chance to think, a tremendous force came from behind. She was already seriously injured and weak. Although she had recovered some of her energy, her shoulder bone had been pierced, and the last bit of energy in her body was instantly scattered. She had no strength left to hold onto Zu An and was directly pulled back.

In Zu'an's eyes, he saw Pei Mianman's shoulder pierced by the Taotie's tongue, which suddenly shot out, and then the tongue pulled her into its mouth.

The two rows of sharp teeth in the Taotie's mouth could easily be imagined as cutting a person's body into several pieces with just a gentle snap, and then chewing it into a pile of minced meat.

Seeing Pei Mianman's desperate eyes as she flew away, and her hand desperately reaching out to grab him, Zu An's eyes instantly reddened. He yelled and chased after her.

The opponent retracted its tongue too quickly; at his normal speed, he obviously couldn't keep up, so he hurriedly summoned a strong wind.

After so long, his powerful wind ability is now only barely usable, and the distance he can teleport is much shorter than normal. The only saving grace is that the opponent's tongue is not nearly a hundred meters long.

Pei Mianman was already in despair. She never expected to die such a miserable death. If she had known, she would have preferred to die among those strange snakes, at least then she wouldn't have suffered.

But the next second she suddenly saw Zuan appear beside her like a divine warrior descending from the heavens. It was all too dreamlike, and she thought it was just her imagination.

Before Zu'an could explain, he held her in one arm and, with the dagger in the other, slashed at the severed tongue on her back.

At the same time, he was also filled with worry. After all, Taotie's tongue looked different from ordinary tongues. It was more like a gun than a tongue. The tongue was straight, hard, and covered with barbs. He was worried that he couldn't cut it off in one go, and then he wouldn't be able to stop the other party from swallowing Pei Mianman into its mouth.

Fortunately, the deadly dagger was indeed incredibly sharp, cleanly severing a section of its tongue.
