Chapter Fifty-Four: Making Amends
Su Xiao lowered her eyes, but in the end said nothing, turned around and got out of the car.
Xu Bozhou watched her resolute back, his heart aching as if something was tearing at it.
She and he were like separated by an invisible chasm; they were clearly very close, yet terrifyingly far apart.
"Chen Huai, evacuate everyone."
Xu Bozhou leaned back in his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Sir, if you ask me, you should have just kept it from Miss, why..."
"I said I'd leave, and I'll leave."
He was willing to compromise for her.

The hospital corridors were filled with an unpleasant smell of disinfectant.
Yan Mingshen, who was originally staying by the bedside, was called out to the corridor by the doctor.
"If you are really worried, we can give Ms. Xia a full check-up."
The doctor frowned; she could tell there was something wrong with Miss Xia.
But the man in front of her insisted that the patient had suffered a severe impact injury to his abdomen and was afraid that the accident would have some impact on his health.
Generally speaking, if the family insists, there's not much of a problem.
However, frequent CT scans are not a good thing.
She doesn't really recommend it.
"Um."
After the doctor left, he went to the window, lit a cigarette, and the cool breeze made him a little more awake.
He didn't feel anything was wrong after talking to his mother.
But upon closer reflection, he clearly remembered that after the car accident, the doctor had said that Xia Zhi's body was no longer capable of bearing children.
Why does the tire still slip?
Since Zhou Manyun was determined to keep it from him, he didn't mind investigating himself.
Just then, my assistant called.
“Miss Xia’s medical records have all been destroyed. We were too late, but I found something else.”
"explain."
Yan Mingshen changed his posture, leaned against the windowsill, and dusted off his cigarette ash.
"Your mother did go to see Xia Zhi two years ago, but she went with the Zhou family."
"The Zhou family?"
Yan Mingshen frowned. Zhou Manyun had never had a good relationship with the Zhou family. She had married his father in order to escape her family.
What kind of show is this now?
"Is it possible to find out who it is?"
"It's a weekend clearance sale."
Upon hearing this result, Yan Mingshen's pupils trembled slightly.
Zhou Qingmo has always been on good terms with the Qin family. How could two people who are completely unrelated end up together?
"Have someone keep an eye on Zhou Manyun."
"yes."
Yan Mingshen hung up the phone, his expression gloomy.
He never imagined that the person who had kept him in the dark all along was actually his own mother.
Then what exactly is Xia Zhi all these years?
Yan Mingshen stubbed out his cigarette and turned to go back to the ward.
The smell of disinfectant lingered in Xia Zhi's nose, and her knuckles turned white as she gripped the bed sheet.
Upon seeing Yan Mingshen enter, she immediately released her grip, a glistening moisture welling in her eyes, her voice trembling softly:
"Ming Shen, the doctor just mentioned a full check-up... can we skip it?"
Yan Mingshen walked to the bedside, his fingertips gently brushing against her cheek, his movements as tender and affectionate as ever.
"Why do you suddenly not want to do it anymore? Are you afraid of the pain?"
Xia Zhi quickly shook her head, gently shook his wrist, and her eyes reddened even more.
"It's not that I'm afraid of the pain, it's just... I heard that CT scans have a lot of radiation. I feel much better now, and the doctor didn't say anything urgent, so maybe we shouldn't get the scan?"
She pretended to be sensible, but inside she was panicking terribly.
She can't be investigated; the car accident back then was all a hoax.
From the driver to the doctor, they were all actors hired by Zhou Manyun.
Yan Mingshen looked down at her and reached out to tuck a stray hair behind her ear.
"Go ahead and get it checked. I'm worried your old injury from back then hasn't fully healed."
His voice was gentle, yet every word he uttered sealed her off.
"I can only feel at ease after I've found out the truth."
Xia Zhi's hand suddenly stopped, and cold sweat quietly seeped out from her back.
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something more, but met his unfathomable eyes.
"But……"
"No buts." Yan Mingshen interrupted her, his tone still steady, but with an added sense of undeniable pressure.
"I've already had my assistant make the arrangements; the check-up will be done this afternoon."
He bent down to tuck the blanket around her, his fingertips accidentally brushing against the back of her hand, but Xia Zhi flinched as if she had been burned.
A faint glint of cold light flashed in Yan Mingshen's eyes, only to be instantly replaced by tenderness.
"Be good, I'll take you home after I'm done investigating."
She bit her lower lip, unable to utter a word of refusal, and could only softly say "Mmm".
But the hand gripping the bed sheet tightened slightly.
She couldn't just sit and wait to die.

In early autumn, scattered maple leaves drifted across Luofeng Garden, and the morning breeze carried the fragrance of osmanthus blossoms past the window.
Xu An, with a piece of toast in his mouth, leaned against the door of Su Xiao's bedroom and yawned slightly.
She's been staying up all night lately and hasn't gotten up this early in a long time.
"Shall we move in together? Should I call two people over?"
"No need, just some clothes and jewelry. I've bought new daily necessities, and the supermarket will send someone to deliver them later."
Su Xiao rubbed her eyes.
Most of the bandages on her body had been removed, if it weren't for the blow Yan Mingshen dealt her yesterday.
I reckon the stitches on his hand can be removed by now.
"Alright."
Xu An finished his bread in a few bites and was about to help when he heard someone knocking on the door.
Who is it?
She rubbed her messy hair and reluctantly opened the door.
"Miss, the master sent us to help Miss Su move."
Chen Huai scratched his head sheepishly.
Although he was used to physical labor involving burning, killing, and looting, helping someone move was a first for him, like a young woman getting into a sedan chair.
"Wow, how thoughtful."
Xu An stretched and stepped aside to let the person in.
Chen Huai brought a man and a woman with him. Judging from their attire, they were most likely transferred from the security department.
The three of them stood awkwardly to one side as soon as they entered, looking very restrained.
When Su Xiao saw Chen Huai, she subconsciously frowned: "Xu Bozhou didn't come?"
"I had a meeting, so I took Mengjin to the company early this morning."
"OK."
Relieved, Su Xiao simply took off her clothes and threw them into Chen Huai's arms.
"Then I'll have to trouble you. Please take the items from these two wardrobes upstairs, as well as the walk-in closet and the long cabinet on the far left."
Su Xiao has never been deprived of herself since she was a child.
Even though all the clothes from the Yan family's house were lost, the new ones have filled three or four large wardrobes.
This doesn't even include jewelry and shoes.
"There's a walk-in closet downstairs; you can hang whatever you like."
She didn't want to cause too much trouble for Xu Bozhou's people.
Anyway, she's not busy lately, so she can take her time to settle things herself tonight.
"Okay, Miss Su."
Chen Huai took the keys and quickly led his men to collect the clothes row by row and carry them upstairs.
Su Xiao and Xu An packed the jewelry into boxes, checked it carefully, and then took it into the dressing room.
Xu An followed behind her and nudged her arm: "Okay, you're even more willing to spend now than before."
"Money I earn myself makes me feel at ease spending it."
Su Xiao walked to the window and looked down at the maple forest.
Previously, because Yan Mingshen preferred white, she even wore simple jewelry.
Now she finally doesn't have to please anyone anymore.
Naturally, you should choose to buy what you like.
The huge walk-in closet was more than half full, with clothes hanging one by one in the closet.
The well-decorated living room features light gray marble floor tiles, and floor-to-ceiling windows let in all the morning light.
Chen Huai handed over a velvet jewelry box:
"Miss Su, this was sent to you separately by the master, as compensation for last time..."
