Wu Fangming chuckled and scratched his head. "I was lucky. The previous one was unfortunately assassinated, so I naturally filled the position."
It's easy to say, but the underlying crisis is self-evident.
Chuanliu frowned and asked, "Have you found the assassin?"
Wu Fangming: "We've made some progress, but unfortunately we lack evidence."
"Xiao Liu, this room has a good view, you can stay here, Xiao Xiu and I will stay downstairs."
Aunt Wu's voice interrupted their conversation at an opportune moment. Standing on the second-floor terrace, she excitedly told Chuanliu about her arrangements.
Chuanliu gave her a slight smile.
Wu Fangming turned his head, his sword-like eyebrows furrowing slightly, and whispered, "I always feel like there's something wrong with them."
The girl raised an eyebrow. "Why do you say that?"
Wu Fangming shook his head. "I can't really explain it, it's just a gut feeling. When I met them, they were also looking for you. It all seems too coincidental. Maybe I'm just overthinking it."
The latter nodded his thanks, "Thank you, I will keep an eye on it."
It seems that not only she, but Wu Fangming also sensed that something was wrong.
This Aunt Wu is really just a kind-hearted person who wants to stick together for warmth.
In everyone's eyes, she was just an ordinary person who had been framed and ended up on the island. Following the logic of seeking advantage and avoiding harm, not to mention actively looking for her, normally just greeting her upon seeing her would be the greatest show of hospitality for a "sacrifice" of Paradise Island like her.
What convinced her most that Aunt Wu had ulterior motives was that, having met Wu Fangming, she could have chosen to rely on him, but instead, she went home with her.
In short, all of this happened too naturally.
Over the next few days, Chuanliu traveled through the Block City, hoping to find out some new information.
Unfortunately, to her disappointment, apart from Wu Fangming's "10 of Spades", she has not heard any information about the identities of other high-level cards.
These high-ranking officials are like air; residents know they exist, but when asked for details, they know nothing.
The group of people holding playing card identities seemed to be divided into two levels: those with numbers below "10" were still traceable, while those with numbers above "10" were nowhere to be found.
Finding the Joker seems a long way off.
If the Joker is among these people, that's fine, but if he's among the wanderers, it's like finding a needle in a haystack.
Looking at the extremely limited clues he had collected, Chuanliu couldn't help but feel a headache coming on.
The best course of action now is to at least make contact with higher-ups in the four-color system in order to break this deadlock.
It seems necessary to have a chat with Qian Chuan.
Knock knock knock.
There was a knock on the door.
"who?"
Why would someone be knocking on her door in the middle of the night?
Chuanliu immediately put away the notes on the table and casually picked up a book to read.
Before receiving a response, the person outside opened the door and poked their head out.
"Xiao Liu, it's me. Auntie has made you some bird's nest porridge. Drink it while it's hot."
Aunt Wu's cheerful voice came from nearby as she stirred the porridge.
Chuan Liu smiled back, but secretly he was wary of Aunt Wu's actions. "You don't need to be so polite. It's so late, and you even went out of your way to find bird's nest?"
“I saw that we had some in our kitchen, so I stewed a bowl for each of the three of us.”
Aunt Wu looked smug and curiously glanced at Chuan Liu's desk. "What are you looking at?"
Chuanliu held up the cover to indicate, "And Then There Were None, it's also a story set on an island."
Aunt Wu nodded as if she understood, "It sounds just like our Paradise Island, it's pretty scary... I haven't seen you for the past few days, I was worried that something might have happened to you. Where have you been?"
Ah, finally we've gotten to the main topic.
"I have a terrible sense of direction, and since I had nothing else to do, I figured I'd familiarize myself with the City of Blocks." Chuanliu changed the subject. "Aunt Wu, can you smell anything?"
The latter paused, then shook his head.
"It tastes like seawater. Paradise Island has the taste of the sea, it's salty." The girl playfully stuck out her tongue.
Aunt Wu smiled awkwardly, exchanged a few pleasantries, and then left.
Chuanliu's expression turned cold as the woman left; clearly, she had been overly concerned about him.
Nothing was said that night.
Early in the morning, Chuanliu was awakened by a series of urgent knocks on the door.
"They're here, they're here."
From afar, we heard Aunt Wu calling out, "Who are you looking for?"
A girl's voice asked, "Excuse me, does Chuanliu-neechan live here?"
Aunt Wu: "Little friend, what do you want with Xiao Liu?"
“I have an older brother who asked me to find Sister Chuanliu and give her this.”
The girl took an envelope out of her pocket and ran away before Aunt Wu could ask her anything.
Aunt Wu slowly closed the door and was about to open the envelope when it slipped from her hand.
Chuanliu stood to the side, holding the letter he had just retrieved.
"I don't like others touching my things, and I especially don't like others invading my privacy."
The girl's voice was chillingly cold, and even the island's heat couldn't quell the terrifying tremor it sent.
"If there is a next time, I won't mind sending you back to the homeless apartment in the City of Hearts."
A cold glint flashed in his phoenix eyes—a threat, a warning.
Aunt Wu was clearly frightened, and she muttered something after Chuanliu left.
Inside the envelope was a red invitation card, with striking black ink marks left on the paper.
