Who could be here so late in Chapter 23?

Chapter 23 Who's here so late?

Song Chen sat down at the dining table and looked at Lin Xi with a complicated expression. "You got up early to make breakfast for me?"

Lin Xi nodded. "I don't know what you like to eat, so I can only make something simple."

"I'm not a picky eater." Song Chen picked up a small steamed bun and took a bite. It was filled with pure meat and was so fragrant and oily.

Taking another sip of the light millet porridge warmed my stomach and made me feel very comfortable.

In ten minutes, Song Chen finished a steamer of steamed buns and a bowl of millet porridge, feeling refreshed and satisfied.

"Thank you for breakfast," Song Chen said, getting up. "I'm leaving now."

"Attorney Song," Lin Xi called out to Song Chen, "may I go into your room to clean it?"

“Okay, thank you for your hard work,” Song Chen understood Lin Xi’s current feelings. She needed a workload that matched her income, which might make her feel more comfortable here. “Please change my toiletries and bedding as well.”

"Okay!" Lin Xi smiled and nodded to Song Chen. "Have a safe trip."

After Song Chen left, Lin Xi limped and began to pack up.

After a night's rest, along with cold compresses and medication, her foot felt much better, but it still wasn't very strong, and she still had to put her weight on the better leg.

But it no longer interferes with her work.

After cleaning the kitchen, she went to clean Song Chen's room, replacing all the toiletries with new ones, changing the bedding to clean ones, wiping everything down, and then carrying a trash bag out of the room.

Lin Xi cleaned the house inside and out, but Song Xu still hadn't gotten up.

She went back to her room to rest, but fearing she wouldn't be able to hear Song Xu's voice, she left the door open.

It was almost noon when Song Xu left the room. He had only gone to sleep late last night, and his head was still groggy when he woke up.

Lin Xi's room was right across from his. As soon as he opened his door, he saw that Lin Xi's door was wide open and Lin Xi was lying on the desk as if she was asleep.

Song Xu quietly entered Lin Xi's room and stood behind her. He first looked at the book she was reading, a legal English dictionary.

Song Xu raised an eyebrow. Was she memorizing law-related vocabulary?

It didn't matter what she was looking at or memorizing; Song Xu's gaze was fixed on Lin Xi's hair.

Lin Xi didn't tie her hair up today; her long hair, past her shoulders, was black and shiny, like a black waterfall.

Song Xu wanted to touch her hair, his fingers moving up and down in her hair, but he didn't know where to start.

Lin Xi got tired of memorizing vocabulary and lay down on the table to close her eyes and rest for a while, but unexpectedly fell asleep and entered a deep sleep.

Ten minutes later, Lin Xi woke up. She sat up straight and bumped her head on something, which startled her so much that she immediately turned around.

Song Xu was also startled by Lin Xi. He hadn't expected Lin Xi to wake up so suddenly. Her smooth hair slid through his palm, and he didn't have time to pull out a single hair.

He withdrew his hand, put it behind his back, cleared his throat, and said, "You're sleeping so soundly. I called you several times but you didn't respond. I'm hungry. Do you have anything to eat?"

Lin Xi had been sleeping soundly, and she thought she really hadn't heard. She looked ashamed and said, "I'm sorry, President Song. It won't happen again. There are steamed buns and porridge in the kitchen, and I've been keeping them warm."

After saying that, she stumbled into the kitchen to prepare food for Song Xu.

Lin Xi placed the steamed buns and millet porridge in front of Song Xu, "President Song, please eat."

Being able to eat right after waking up is a wonderful thing for night owls. Song Xu was very satisfied with Lin Xi's service. "Have you eaten yet?"

“I’ve already eaten,” Lin Xi said, having eaten even earlier than Song Chen. “I got up at five in the morning to make breakfast. Lawyer Song left after having breakfast.”

"I also cleaned the house, except for your bedroom, of course," Lin Xi recounted the chores she had done that day.

"You got up at five o'clock?" Song Xu paused in mid-air as he scooped up a spoonful of millet porridge.

Lin Xi nodded. "For three years of high school, I always got up at five and went to bed at twelve. I got used to getting up early and going to bed late."

She went to bed half an hour earlier yesterday, so getting up today was effortless.

Song Xu slowly drank the millet porridge in his spoon, then asked a question that piqued his curiosity: "You worked so hard, which university did you get into?"

There are many universities in Jiangbei City, at all levels, but the best one is the university he is currently studying at—Jiangbei University.

"Jiangbei University," Lin Xi said proudly when talking about her college entrance examination results, "I ranked eleventh in history in Jiangbei City this year."

Song Xu's expression changed slightly. He was the twelfth ranked physics student in Jiangbei City last year. Although one of them was a science student and the other was an arts student, Song Xu lost in the ranking.

He never expected that the nanny he hired would be a beautiful and academically gifted woman.

"What major did you apply for?" Song Xu asked, trying to appear calm.

"Law at the law school," Lin Xi replied. "I want to be a lawyer in the future."

Song Xu fell silent. Very well, he was in the same college as his brother.

Perhaps this is fate. After finishing breakfast, Song Xu wiped his mouth and hands clean and went to Song Chen's room first.

Since he hadn't gotten Lin Xi's sample, he might as well prepare his brother's sample first, and then take a few strands of Lin Xi's hair when he left.

Song Xu walked around Song Chen's room. Everything inside had been replaced with new ones. The toothbrush packaging was still intact, and the ashtray had been cleaned until it was sparkling clean.

The room looked as if no one had ever lived there; all traces of Song Chen's life had been cleaned up.

He walked out of Song Chen's room and found Lin Xi. "You cleaned my brother's room too?"

Lin Xi nodded slightly. "It was Attorney Song who agreed. He even let me change my toiletries and bedding."

Song Xu sighed. Well, the identification process can only be postponed until his brother comes back.

"I'm going out in a bit and won't be back tonight." Today is Sunday, and Song Xu is going back to the Song family's old house for dinner. He told Lin Xi this so she wouldn't have to wait for him.

"Okay." Lin Xi was happy to hear this news. She would feel more at ease without her employer around.

Song Xu went back to his room to change his clothes. Before leaving, worried that Lin Xi would have nothing to do, he said, "My brother's bookshelf has a lot of books about law. You can pick out a few to read."

"May I?" Lin Xi's eyes widened. When she was cleaning Song Chen's room, she saw a bookcase full of books, but she didn't dare to touch them without permission.

Song Xu nodded. "It's okay, just don't break it."

"I will be careful."

Lin Xi happily saw Song Xu out, then went to Song Chen's room, picked out two basic law books, and took them back to her own room to read.

Lin Xi, who was eager to learn, would read books until dark. When she got hungry, she would heat up the leftover xiaolongbao and eat them all day.

It was past 11 p.m. when Lin Xi was feeling a bit sleepy. She hadn't moved much all day, and her feet weren't hurting as much anymore. After taking a nice, fragrant bath, she came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel.

She had just taken out her pajamas to change when she heard the doorbell ring.

Lin Xi's heart tightened. Who could be here so late?
