Chapter 19: Animals Scratching the Door
Dongping County has many rivers and there is a sea nearby, which is rich in aquatic products. Konjac got up early in the morning to buy the freshest ingredients.
Cui Qingyi plans to cook the first meal in her new home herself.
When she was at the Cui family, Cui Qingyi was afraid that the crazy Yuan would find out, so she was always cautious and never dared to mention anything related to her past life.
Now that she has finally left the Cui family, she can cook without any worries.
Konjac was helping Cui Qingyi on the side. As he watched the colorful, fragrant and delicious dishes being served, he sniffed hard and asked in surprise, "Miss, where did you learn to cook these dishes? I haven't seen them in the mansion yet."
Cui Qingyi handed the last dish of fish head tofu soup to Konjac and said casually, "I read it in a book."
Hearing this, Konjac nodded in understanding. Her daughter really liked reading, but were there books that taught people how to cook?
Lotus shrimp, salt and pepper shrimp, pan-fried river fish, fish head tofu soup, stir-fried choy sum. Four dishes and one soup, with fish and shrimp, perfect.
The two of them moved a table and chairs and sat in the yard. Cui Qingyi drank tea instead of wine and said, "I hope Cui Qingyi and Konjac will have this day every year!"
Konjac was infected by the bright light in Cui Qingyi's eyes, and raised his teacup and imitated Cui Qingyi's words: "I hope that you and Konjac will have this day every year."
After a very satisfying meal, Cui Qingyi touched her stomach and felt a little regretful: "What a pity there is no wine and no spicy food."
The Great Jin Dynasty was not in any period of history that Cui Qingyi was familiar with. It was a completely blank dynasty for Cui Qingyi, but many things in this dynasty overlapped infinitely with the ancient times in her knowledge.
At first, Cui Qingyi tried to figure it all out. She wanted to know whether Da Jin really existed in Chinese history, but for some reason, it was accidentally forgotten.
But gradually, Cui Qingyi stopped worrying about it. She just needed to know that she was in it, and it was real.
Cui Qingyi often has some mischievous thoughts. If she, a person who traveled back thousands of years ago, left some special things in this era, waiting to be discovered by future generations, would people be surprised at the advanced thinking of people thousands of years ago, or would they be so imaginative that they guessed that she was a time traveler? Would those archaeologists be scared?
After dinner, Konjac cleared the dishes and went to the kitchen to wash them. Cui Qingyi sat in the courtyard bathed in bright sunlight, enjoying the rare freedom and quietness.
That night, Cui Qingyi did not suffer from insomnia again. She slept very soundly. When she woke up, the room was dim and it was drizzling outside.
The sound of raindrops falling on the bluestone slabs was particularly pleasant. Cui Qingyi closed her eyes, got up from the bed, opened the wooden window and watched the rain.
Konjac heard the voice and came back from the kitchen in front: "Miss, autumn is coming soon. Be careful not to catch a cold if it rains."
"Is autumn coming so soon?"
Konjac walked in and took out a coat for Cui Qingyi to put on. "Yeah, if it rains a few more times, the weather will get colder and colder. I wonder if it's cold in Dongping in winter?"
"No matter how cold it gets, it won't be colder than the winter in Qinghe City."
Cui Qingyi said this completely unconsciously, but Konjac was stunned.
The winter cold in Qinghe City does not hurt the skin, but seems to chill the bones.
Konjac suddenly realized that her daughter had lived a hard life for the past 19 years, but this kind of hardship was like the winter in Qinghe City, not in the flesh but in the heart and bones.
Cui Qingyi likes rainy days very much. On rainy days, the whole world will suddenly become quiet, making people feel peaceful.
Breakfast is white porridge, steamed buns, boiled eggs and pickles.
Konjac knew Cui Qingyi's habits. When she came out after breakfast, there were tables and chairs set up under the eaves, and a pot of tea on the table.
Cui Qingyi spent the whole morning watching the rain under the porch. After Konjac finished his work in the kitchen, she pulled him over to sit under the eaves and watch the rain together.
"When the rain stops, we'll go buy some flowers and plants to put in the yard. We'll also have to buy some good tea and some snacks."
Konjac was a person who could not calm down. After being interrupted by her, Cui Qingyi's melancholy caused by the drizzle slowly dissipated.
I unconsciously followed Konjac's lead and started discussing: "It's time to buy some flowers and plants, otherwise this yard will be too empty and lifeless."
"Woo woo woo~ woo woo~"
As the two were talking, there was a scratching sound outside the door, which sounded like an animal was scratching at the door.
Cui Qingyi and Konjac looked at each other. Konjac went to the woodshed to get a stick, and then walked towards the gate carefully.
As if sensing someone approaching in the yard, the scratching sound on the door stopped. Cui Qingyi put her ear to the door and heard a faint panting sound outside.
I looked through the crack in the door, but couldn't see what it was.
Konjac reached out to open the door, but Cui Qingyi stopped him: "Don't open the door, it's probably a stray dog or something, and it can't get in anyway since the door is closed."
Konjac thought about it and it made sense. As long as it wasn't someone from the alley doing anything bad, it would be fine.
Outside the door, a big black dog, soaking wet and with its hind legs drooping, was lying quietly. When it heard footsteps approaching in the yard, it moved its body and hid itself in the corner.
But the wooden door in front of it did not open as it expected, and the fragrance that made it want to get closer slowly moved away.
It anxiously wanted to scratch the door again, but it didn't know what it thought of. It retracted its claws and hid in the corner, letting the increasingly heavy rain fall on its dry fur.
In the courtyard, after lunch, Cui Qingyi yawned sleepily as she watched the increasingly heavy rain. Seeing this, Konjac said, "Girl, go take a nap. There's nothing to do anyway."
Cui Qingyi thought about it and realized that it was true. She looked at the sewing basket on Konjac's legs and said, "You should go and rest for a while too."
Konjac said indifferently, "Go and rest, young lady. Sewing isn't tiring. You left home without anything, and autumn is approaching, and the weather is getting colder. I'll make you some thick clothes."
The thought of this made Konjac furious, but he didn't want to mention the Chen family's terrible deeds in front of Cui Qingyi, so he could only curse Chen Linan's family in his heart.
Her daughter came to the Chen family at the age of fifteen. Living alone in that messy inner house, she was neither loved by her husband nor liked by her mother-in-law. In the end, she was kicked out of the house without even being able to bring out a thick piece of clothing.
They are from a noble family, but they are all rotten hearts and lungs.
Seeing Konjac hanging her head, Cui Qingyi knew she was angry.
But she didn't think of trying to persuade him. Their life in Dongping County was peaceful and stable. As time went by, everything would be forgotten.
Cui Qingyi woke up and the rain gradually subsided.
There was a slight chill in the air, and Cui Qingyi suddenly wanted to eat some hot pot. Hot pot paired with cold wine would definitely taste different.
Konjac was still sitting in the yard doing needlework. When she heard some noise in the house, she stood up and pushed the door open. "Miss, what would you like to eat tonight? I'll go prepare dinner."
"I want to eat mutton hotpot, and some cold wine."
Konjac thought about it and saw that there was a place selling mutton on the street: "Then I'll go buy some mutton."
